What's More Unfortunate?

The first time I heard A Day In The Life Give Peace a chance was at Anfield in 2008, I loved it, does anyone know if he played it before that concert?
Nope, debut, a shock surprise debut, one of the handful in the last 10 years. Someone now will post he did do 'Give Peace A Chance' before.
Well, he did do it as part of the John Lennon medley at that Liverpool concert in the 90s. Sorry, you did say it was going to happen.

Just looking at Paul's upcoming tour dates where he does have the whole month of August off and his shows don't continue until 9/11 in the NYC metro area (starting off in Newark NJ). If there is any chance he will shakeup the setlist, this would be the time he might do it. Coming back to the NYC area might compel him to make some changes/additions. Many of his July shows were in smaller markets or markets (Miami, Tampa & Atlanta) where he hadn't been in a while. At these recent shows, he could use the "setlist reasoning" that those markets hadn't heard the different songs from the current One-on-One tour. As I said, coming back to NYC that has such a bigger media presence (also more critical) might compel him (or his advisors) to do some song changes. Of course there has been talk on this Site about Paul adding literally a brand new song or two from his upcoming album. That alone might be the extent of the setlist changes. But, it would provide "new" excitement/publicity to this tour particularly in a market like NYC where the press/music critics will not be nearly the "fanboy" types like he got from the smaller markets. That would be my guess as what might happen starting in Newark. All he would have to do is "drop" a couple of the tertiary type Solo and/or Beatle songs to make that happen. As far as a major setlist change, I really doubt we will see it. We will still probably get the 1 and 1/2 Sgt. Pepper songs and the continuation of "no FITD" songs. Frankly, I would rather hear My Brave Face, This One and/or Put it There over a brand new song from the new album. I know that might sound "strange" coming from someone like me that has been constructively critical of the One-on-One Setlist and lack of new music. Singing literally a brand new song might be walking a fine line (sorry for the Chaos & Creation pun) for Paul. Sometimes brand new songs take time to "digest" even when you are privately listening to the actual new album at your house in your car. Talk about a lack of response and total silence from the audience when he begins to sing it. It could expose his 2017 voice without the studio tricks. Doing a song like My Brave Face, Put It There or even Take It Away are at least relatively known and would be safer. Paul, as we know, is unpredictable and doesn't always play it safe which could be a great thing. If Paul/Band rehearse the "new" song (or maybe even 2) and it sounds "good" my guess is that it will be the only change. That alone would be a major step forward to creating spark to this tour. And you couldn'd get better publicity for the upcoming album. Think about all the you-tube hits it will receive. But as I said, you are also "skating on thin ice" and it really needs to sound good. One positive thing for sure... it would force Paul/Band to do some serious rehearsing and that might be great. Doing the song/songs over several shows will also give them more chances to improve with each show. Thoughts?

I think there's a chance of some change with the New York area shows for the following reasons: First, being that New Jersey was part of the "One On One" tour in 2016, and will be the first show of the next leg. Second, he may be ready to give us a preview of his next album. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

__________________________________________________ I agree DrivingFan 100%. The potential changes will be all about introducing to the world 1 or 2 new songs from the upcoming album. The key (as you say) is if these songs are actually ready. The other key is whether Paul feels that he and the Band are confident enough to unveil them. As i said, it is a "double edge" sword. If performed well, then there is no better way to promote and create sales for the new album. The internet hits on Youtube will go through the roof. Conversely, if the performance isn't good, it will do the opposite for sales... A real tricky situation. One positive is that, if ready, it will force Paul/Band to do some relatively "serious" rehearsing in August. Do we know if the Band participated on the new album? Paul and the Band basically didn't have to do any rehearsing up to this point for these US shows. Another plus if this does happen, we might at least get some new stories!

Oh, I certainly hope something changes for the Newark show! I'm going with 2 people that have already attended his shows with me the last few years, including last Summer in NJ. The shows have been too similar. I feel guilty making people pay $400 plus (and only for half-decent seats) to see the same show, hear the same stories, etc. Just a little bit of a change would be great! Surprise us, please!

____________________________________________________ Couldn't agree more Thisbe. Don't know if you seen my posts but I turned down the opportunity to see Paul in Tampa for the exact same reason. But I will be in NJ in September. If he does some setlist changes (including the possibility of 1 or 2 Brand new songs) I might consider trying to get 1 ticket. I know it would cost a lot but that would be the impetus (changes in the setlist) to get me to consider. Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see. It is a good thought from 2 huge, serious fans like you and me who want some creativity, changes and excitement to this setlist.

Yes, I've seen your posts, and I felt the same way: planned to skip this year, until Newark was announced. I'd been saying for years he should play there! So convenient for me. So, I almost felt I had to go, hoping for some changes. After reading about the shows so far, I'm very discouraged and disappointed. Although I would love an entirely new show, I'd settle for some minor changes, a couple of different songs, maybe some different little stories, something!

__________________________________________________ Couldn't agree more Thisbe. Everything about the new album seems to be so secretive. We know the name of the producer but that is about it. I don't even think anyone (outside of his inside circle) knows whether Paul's Band is actually playing on it. I guess at this point we will just have to wait and see. It will be interesting to see if Paul/Band are doing any rehearsing in August. If word gets out that they are, I think the chances for a couple of "new" songs being unveiled in the N.Y. Market are greatly improved.

He didn't play "Girls' School", "Medicine Jar" or "Frozen Jap" in Tokyo. Might as well retire.

I have to admit that I'm always hoping for setlist surprises and more solo songs in the set. That is why I'm so eager to follow the discussions on this board. However, whenever I'm at a Paul show, I always enjoy it and don't think about the setlist that much. Everytime I have seen Paul live, I have been very surprised about some of the songs, because I have kept away from the setlist threads beforehand. So for me, it's more of a theoretical discussion. Every time I'm at a concert I really like the setlist anyway.
