Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

We all love McCartney, and it's because we love him that we want him to perform even more of his fantastic music! I'm a Paul McCartney fan, and I can't understand why anyone that truly loves his music wouldn't want to hear as much of it as they possibly could?? Personally I want this man to perform as many of his songs as is humanly possible for him to do. By performing the same basic songs year in and year out, he's leaving so much fantastic music unheard.
-
Exactly, left hand man. After reading this entire thread I see no "downers" whatsoever, just some passionate discussion and quite a bit of constructive criticism. What's wrong with that? I reserve my right to be critical of Paul's setlist AND admire him for his almost mindblowing talent when it comes to writing, singing, playing, producing, arranging etc.
-
I agree he can get some songs out, and put new songs in, But some songs just have to stay in (like Hey Jude and Yesterday) I don't like Yesterday, so he may kick it out, But if you like Yesterday, you'd probably disagree with me, and want Yesterday stay in, On that way, you keep argue. I think his setlist is fine, (Well, the 'Foxy Ladie' after 'Let me roll it' may be skipped) In the Roundhouse, London 2007, he performed Baby Face, The audience didn't seem to like it, it was almost like I was behind the piano! That's how much the audience was interested, So I think he doesn't want this kind of things again, That's why he does songs everybody knows, I would like him to perform 'For no one', 'Rain', 'Dizzy miss lizzy' and 'Im a loser' I think it'd be great if he plays a video of John perform a song, and then Paul sing along, and then put the video-sound of and Paul sing alone. If you know what I mean...

LIke I have said before, some of this problem is due to the audience. If it is not a Beatle song, they act totally bored for the most part. I love the Beatles as much as anyone but admire McCartney's other work also. I happen to think his last two records are some of his finest work in his entire career. He still has not done certain Beatle songs (Rocky Racoon, Oh Darling) that I love but I would just as much like to hear things like "Take It Away", "About You", "My Brave Face", "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and songs from MAF (especially "House of Wax"). McCartney could delete some songs he always sings and sprinkle in some of these songs for example and still give Beatle fans plenty to be happy about during the concert.

The setlist debate is one that is never going to please everyone. But i'm with yankeefan7,Paul has a great back catalogue post 1969 to the present day.I do believe that there are a quite a lot of Wings songs that he could play that fans do know, apart from Band,Jet,Live And Let Die and My Love.Fans might not have heard the lesser known Wings hits for awhile but once they are played i'm sure they'll be swept along. Most have not been aired for years,Listen To What The Man Said,Junior's Farm,Helen Wheels,Hi Hi Hi,Silly Love Songs,With A Little Luck were all major hits, plus a lot of the album tracks are known from the Wings days. When Wings toured they hardly played any Beatle songs, so it wouldn't be a drastic thing if just a few extra non Beatle songs were played.
-
On the concert DVDS and live stuff online like from Liverpool Sound, Kiev, Quebec, etc. you don't see "totally bored" people in the crowds when non-Fab songs are played, so why was that said? Bewildered bout that.
-
Hi Suzy,i have seen Paul 6 times and the only time i have seen people less enthusiastic for a song tends to be a brand new song.Over the last 20 years Paul's albums haven't sold like they did in the '70's and early '80's,so the audience are generally unfamiliar with anything past '83.So if Paul tours a album the songs from that album go down poorly compared to the "oldies".
-
I disagree, the Chaos songs were great live, and the MAF songs have definitely been some of the best performed live, and people are asking McCartney to keep them in his setlist. Remember no one is asking McCartney to play some deep buried obscure album track, if he stepped on stage and performed Wings better material and #1 smash hits, plus his best solo material, no one would be disappointed. If someone is disappointed, they really don't have a valid position because McCartney has given them the last TWENTY YEARS, TWENTY YEARS to see him perform the Beatle heavy setlist. So they need to get over it. I keep saying how many opportunities have the rest of the people who love all of McCartney's career had? They deserve at least one tour!

I don't know about noone. I'd love to hear San Ferry Anne among others, realizing of course that its extremely unlikely. :
-
Left Hand Man, i agree with you that the Chaos and MAF songs sound great live, but as you and i have said before most fans that go to Paul's gigs now seem to want Beatle songs.I'd love a better balanced setlist across his career, but it's not likely.
-
Boycie, I totally understand what you are saying, but my point is that those fans that insist on McCartney performing the same songs over and over are just being selfish and closed minded. I keep saying McCartney has given them TWENTY YEARS, I can't stress that enough, TWENTY YEARS of Beatle heavy shows, what do they expect, the man to just keep singing the same songs over and over and over until he drops dead? He may never ever do it, but I am always going to keep saying and asking that McCartney change his setlist and perform much more of his fantastic music. I just don't see how any real fan wouldn't want him to, if you truly love his music, you should want to hear as much of it performed as is possible? I know the answer really, as you've seen me post many times, I'm a true Paul McCartney fan, most people are really BEATLE FANS who happen to listen to McCartney. They're really missing some fantastic music!

I don't think anyone is complaining about McCartney actually touring, the question is why the same basic songs over and over and over, year after year after year??
Pete Townsend said it best, "McCartney likes to rest on his laurels."
And when exactly did he say that? From which interview? Do you have a link? I have followed Pete's career fairly closely I have never heard him mention that. Perhaps he did. Recording 36 albums since the break up of the Beatles isn't exactly resting on his laurels.
-
Davidp, we're talking performing live, and it could be viewed that on stage McCartney does seem to lean on the Beatles more than anything else. That was perfectly fine for one or two tours, in fact it was thrilling to see McCartney rock out on those great Beatle songs, but now it's been TWENTY YEARS of Beatle heavy shows, and people are commenting about McCartney's predictable, common, repetitive setlist.

I think recording wise Paul has never lived in the past, but live it's not the case.Fans loved Wings shows in the '70's despite hardly any Beatle songs in the setlist.I think if he played songs right across his vast career i don't think people would be disappointed,as long as generally the songs are known there won't be a problem.

And that is ture, but I suppose he's just giving the people what they want, and as it has been mentioned, people seem to go nuts when he plays the Beatle songs. And I have yet to read a negative review from one of his shows, so I guess he is just going to continue playing them. And he plays them well! I have noticed some different songs creeping in lately, so that's good. And the new music is out there for those who want to listen to it, anyway. I just don't think he is an oldie's act since he always does play some new songs on tour. And an oldies act doesn't record new material the way McCartney does. 11 new albums in the 1990's (which includes the 3 live albums) and 6 albums so far in the 2000's. Would like to hear him play more Wings songs though.

You're the one who said you follows Pete's career closely, maybe not as closely as you brag. I'll give you a hint. It was in Rolling Stone. Now get busy Mr. Know it all, there are lots of past issue to look through. Go on.... get busy.

But I'm not a Beatles-fan for 20 years, I'm not even 20 years old! So how could I have seen Paul performing Beatle songs?
