Doctor Who

Martin, thanks so much for your thoughts on the particular scene in question, very reassuring. The triplets have a full understanding of Captain Jack, and are completely comfortable with storylines involving him and/or Torchwood characters, so no worries then! Thanks again!

Birthday:
Looking forward to Vampires in Venice, filmed on location in Croatia (another useless fact for you there Anita!! )
Not at all useless to me, Jeremy! I quite enjoy having this sort of background information, and I thank you for sharing it with all of us! Looking forward to your thoughts on the latest episode...Enjoy!

Torchwood....Captain Jack..... I see that I need some catching up to do here I just want to thank Martinput and Birthday and Triplets Love Paul for all of your insight into these shows... I am starting to look forward to the Angels.... I can't believe it, but you are really making it sound so interesting. I also am thinking that I should make arrangements to go to the Museum in Wales... that would probably be really interesting, I'm thinking!!! I knew something really spunky was coming up with Amy.... THANKS!!!

Oh wow Love2travel, you're coming to the UK - presumably for Paul's summer tour here, right? Hope you have a great time here. Let us know where you're going and I'm sure people on the board will help recommend a few places to visit while you're here. If you go to Cardiff, here's the official website for the Doctor Who website: http://www.doctorwhoexhibitions.com/ Cardiff's a thriving modern city, but one which has a proud heritage too. Cardiff Castle is one of the key landmarks. But the waterfront development, where the exterior shots for Torchwood and parts of Doctor Who were filmed, is very modern and impressive. Torchwood was an adult-orientated spin-off from Doctor Who, featuring former companion Captain Jack Harkness, who was openly bi-sexual. Stories were much darker, though equally inventive, and featured moderate swearing and sexual scenes. You don't need to have watched it to understand or follow Doctor Who. There's also a children's spin-off from Doctor Who, featuring former companion Sarah-Jane Smith, who's joined by 3 teenagers to fight alien threats. There's a degree of crossover and some of the same aliens appear in the 3 series (which saves money on special effects and prosthetics) , but the producers are careful to ensure you don't have to watch all 3 to follow what's going on. The Sarah-Jane Adventures, which is pretty high-quality for a children's show, goes out on the SyFy Channel in the US.

Vampires in Venice (actually Croatia!! ) tonight in the UK. Entertaining episode, very funny in places, few nice scares. Not the greatest episode of the season, bit throw-away but fun - great scene when the Doctor first meets the vampires. And the pre-credit scene is very funny too! So not as strong an episode as the Angels two-parter, but it would take a lot to beat that. It builds the characters a bit more and the crack in the wall season arc continues. The trailer for next week's episode looks incredible. Extremely interesting premise, lots of mystery, fantastic idea for a story. This season is shaping up to be a classic, even with my reservations about the Daleks story. Matt continues to grow on me and Karen is one of my favourite companions.

Questions about "Victory of the Daleks" When the Doctor asked Amy if she remember previous Dalek invasions of Earth in recent memory. She said she didn't. Could this be a storyline for an upcoming story? Is it perhaps that she could be from an alternate timeline? At the end of the episode when the TARDIS leaves Churchil...l's underground bunker HQ, we see that rift in the wall. Is that Prisoner Zero possibly coming back? Or is it the alternate world where Rose Tyler is? Professor Edwin Bracewell- is he a Dalek created android or was he a human kidnapped by the Daleks fitted with Dalek technology? Just cracks me up with the polite Daleks. Love the newly redesigned Daleks. Reminds me kind of the redesigned VW Beetle. So, we'll be seeing this new design Dalek for now on? No more of the retro Daleks that we have always known? Why the new design? I thought would have seen Capt. Jack in this story with him being in the RAF. When Churchill said he met the Doctor before, which version of the Doctor was it when they last met?

Questions about "Victory of the Daleks" When the Doctor asked Amy if she remember previous Dalek invasions of Earth in recent memory. She said she didn't. Could this be a storyline for an upcoming story? Is it perhaps that she could be from an alternate timeline? This question is a pivotal story-line running through this series - we do not know the answer yet, but the question is preying on the Doctors mind as well. At the end of the episode when the TARDIS leaves Churchil...l's underground bunker HQ, we see that rift in the wall. Is that Prisoner Zero possibly coming back? Or is it the alternate world where Rose Tyler is? The crack in the wall has been seen in every episode up to and including the Victory of The Daleks and is clearly what they call a series arc - an idea or notion that crops up regularly through a whole series - only UK members will know if it features in the next episodes and I will not post spoilers. There has been nothing to suggest it links to Rose Tyler's alternate universe - where she is now living happily ever after with her "Human" Doctor Who clone of the David Tennant incarnation. That story-line seems firmly shut now and it seems to me it's unlikely either will reappear again. Professor Edwin Bracewell- is he a Dalek created android or was he a human kidnapped by the Daleks fitted with Dalek technology? In the episode he is seen to be a complete robotic creation as the bomb is revealed in a mechanical chest cavity, besides the damaged hand. It's unclear how he has a full human memory of unrequited love and a childhood, and strong emotional values, so some kind of mind transfer from a real person could be speculated upon, although there's no evidence to suggest this in the episode. Just cracks me up with the polite Daleks. Love the newly redesigned Daleks. Reminds me kind of the redesigned VW Beetle. So, we'll be seeing this new design Dalek for now on? No more of the retro Daleks that we have always known? Why the new design? The new primary colour Daleks have been making personal appearances around the UK at events so the BBC seem to be making them the new "default" design - trailers for the first of the four up-coming computer game episodes feature these new designs - which would be easier to render for cumputer graphics. It seems that they want the Daleks back fully fit and functioning, several of that past incarnations have seen them weak and, in some cases, with a compromised genetic make-up, this episode clears that old legacy out and gives them new clean DNA for a fresh menacing start. It has also been michieviously, and probably correctly, suggested that we will see a new line of toys for Christmas. I thought would have seen Capt. Jack in this story with him being in the RAF. With the traumatic ending of the last Torchwood mini-series it would seem trite and disrespectful to return Capt. Jack as if that story-line hadn't happened. The future of Torchwood remains officially uncertain. When Churchill said he met the Doctor before, which version of the Doctor was it when they last met?
I'll try to look up the last encounter with Churchill - but those other answers should assist. Martin
-
The BBC's official web-site remarks that clearly in some unknown past event Churchill has met the Doctor resulting in his ability to know and contact The Doctor by phone: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/characters/Churchill But as it doesn't mention incarnation or episode it doesn't seem to be an existing episode. I see some Whovian web-sites are speculating this opens up the potential for an earlier meeting in a future episode - much like the complex time-line issues with Professor River Song. Martin
-
Ah.... Someones done the research:
Yes, the Doctor met him twice in the BBC Books series. In 'Players' and 'The Shadow in the Glass'.
Apparently the book's story-lines were written representing the Tom Baker incarnation. Martin
-
Great answers as usual from Martin. One final point on the Daleks redesign. I read somewhere that they're similar in design to the ones used in the two Doctor Who feature films from the mid-sixties, so in that respect they're actually quite retro themselves!

To coin a British political phrase this week, I agree with Martin. Captain Jack's not in a good place right now, although David Tennant's Doctor did try to improve his mood at the end of the Christmas special. But I think there's a couple of additional reasons they didn't meet in "Victory of the Daleks". Firstly that this season is about introducing a new Doctor and companion and developing the relationship between them. Bringing back an old companion, especially one who's seen the universe as much as Captain Jack, would hamper that narrative. It's the same reason that Russell T Davies temporarily wrote Captain Jack out after Chris Ecclestone regenerated into David Tennant. Russell wanted us to get to know the 10th Doctor through Rose's eyes. He knew that Jack would have taken the regeneration in his stride. The second difficulty in bringing Captain Jack back is that when the Doctor first met Captain Jack in "The Empty Child", they didn't know each other, so couldn't have met during "Vitory of the Daleks", even though both episodes take place at some point during 1941. Immediately after "The Empty Child", Captain Jack left with the Doctor in the TARDIS, so there was no room for him to pop up in Matt Smith's story. There was one other another way the Doctor could have meet Captain Jack during "Victory of the Daleks" though. Following the events of "The Parting of the Ways", when Jack was left behind on Satellite 5, he used his transporter to go back to earth to find the Doctor, but ended up in 1869 instead of 2005 and had to live through the whole 20th Century until he could meet the Doctor again in the epiode "Utopia" around 2007. So there were technically two Captain Jacks around in 1941!! However, it's VERY clear in "Utopia" that Captain Jack hadn't seen the Doctor since the episode "The Parting of the Ways", so again Jack couldn't have met Matt Smith's Doctor in 1941. The only way they could have featured him in "Victory of the Daleks" was as a cameo background role, like one of the Spitfire pilots, but that would have seemed gratuitous and demeaning for such a major character in recent Who history. Also it's likely that the older Jack would have kept away from his earlier version in 1940s London to avoid the two bumping into each other and disrupting the space-time continuum!! I think he was off working for Torchwood at this time. Mind you, with the series arc going the way it is, I suppose all of the above doesn't really matter..... :

Martin and Jeremy...Thanks for posting all of that information...incredible!!! Jeremy, so happy to learn that you enjoyed Vampires! Looking forward to it! We did indeed watch Angels with the lights ON!!! LOVED the beginning! Made me think of Planet of the Dead...high-tech, the music...very cool! "Hallucinogenic Lipstick"...I'd like to have a tube of that! It was wonderful to finally see some fear and vulnerability from Amy! Really enjoyed some of the lines delivered in this episode... "I'm going to be a professor some day?...How exciting!...SPOILERS!!!" "Doctor, can you sonic me?" I like the playfulness developing between Amy and the Doctor, it's sweet! It captured my attention that River completely approves of Amy. I thought this was very interesting. The music played such a huge part of the fright element in this episode, very well done! A very good episode, cannot wait for part two!

Hello Birthday.... yes, I'll be crossing the pond... praying that the volcanic ash doesn't cause any havoc on the days of my travel... I'm sure I'll have a wonderful time, but I am open to any suggestions for great places to check out while I'm there. I can take a train, tube or a bus from London. The Dr. Who museum in Cardiff looks very interesting as well as the castle.... I love castles So British and all that history The Angels show kept me on the edge of my seat I kept wanting to turn it off, but of course I couldn't it was so scary, that I had to take a peak at next weeks show.... right around when the Dr. was examining something.... What a surprise!!! I'm really curious to find out about River Song and what she meant when she was saying that the Doctor didn't know about her and jail? I'm still not sure who she is, just someone from this future. I always hate it in a scary movie when you see the doors lock in the background, and this was no exception!!! Excellent how they figured that out with the pause on the video. Can't wait for the second part!!!

Martin, that sounds really interesting.... Dr. Who clone of David Tennent Can't quite picture him settling down to a normal life tho...

Glad you enjoyed the return of the weeping angels, Anita. Great episode, wasn't it, and part 2 is even better. Yeah, the one liners were great weren't they! "She's Mrs Doctor, isn't she! She's so your wife!" That scene with the angel emerging from the screen was terrifying! Bit like the film the Ring, I'm told, although I'm too much of a coward to actually watch that. ops: : As an aside (and I know you love my useless trivia!! ) - it was that scene with the TARDIS on the beach that was the first on-location shoot of the entire season. The papers were full of "papped" photos of Matt and Karen on location. And yes full of spoilers, because Alex Kingston was pictured too, so we all knew River was coming back. Love that line "SPOILERS!"

Hi love2travel, I assume you're staying in London? If you like castles and British history, you could try Windsor. It's not far from London and has a very large castle, where the Queen spends most of her weekends and is very beautiful. The town is very quaint and picturesque too. If you're travelling to Cardiff by train, it will take around 3 hours. On the same train line, around 2 hours from London, is the city of Bath. You can visit the Roman Baths, now a major tourist attraction, but founded by the Romans 2000 years ago, using a source of natural mineral water. You can bathe in the waters too if it's not too cold and look around the site. More recently, Bath grew to prominence during Georgian times, and has some of the best examples of Georgian architecture in the country, including the wonderful Royal Crescent. Bath Abbey is worth a visit and is in the city centre next to the Roman Baths, as is Pultney Bridge, a three-arched bridge spanning the River Avon, based on an original, but unused, design for the Rialto Bridge in Venice. You can see pictures of Bath's landmarks here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_I_listed_buildings_in_Bath_and_North_East_Somerset Not sure how long you're staying in the country or how far you want to travel. What sort of places do you like apart from castles? Let me know and I'll send you some other suggestions. I assume you're attending Paul's gigs in both London and Cardiff? If so, Bath and the West Country are in easy reach of Cardiff and there's plenty to see there as well as around London. Glad you enjoyed Doctor Who. Great episode wasn't it. Yes River Song certainly is a mystery. You might find out a little bit more next week is all I can say at the moment.

I remembered your hints of this scene. Once shown, I realized that I had seen pictures of it at some point. It was very well done...Beautiful!

Hello Birthday... Yes... love London... riding the tubes and walking for miles.... history... museums... a slice of heaven for me!!! Yes, I agree with you about Windsor.... I always mean to take the train and stay the day... I've been to Bath and Stonehenge also... didn't realize the Pultney Bridge was related to the Rialto Bridge... thanks so much for that link!! The architecture in Bath is lovely... I took a tour to the Circus and of course the baths and I have some beautiful photos of the Abbey. I don't have a ticket for Cardiff yet, may just "wing" it and try to get a ticket outside, or hopefully find one online..not sure. I had a crazy dream of going to the soundcheck... until I got out my money translator.... owch... the pound compared to the dollar is a better than last year, but still almost double. I am trying to figure out if there's a way to get to the Cotswolds.... I hear there are lots of scenic places to photograph out there. I'm there almost 2 weeks, so I have a bit of time to explore. I'd really like to find some nice gardens, perhaps at a castle. I'm wondering about any music related things to see? I've loved everywhere I've been so far... How long to take a trip to Liverpool? I haven't been there for years... There's so much to see... it's hard to figure it all out.... Just re-watched the Angels yesterday... had to take a peak from next week and what a surprise... and I've been watching the preview commercials and can't figure out why Amy seems to have her head on the ground? Looking forward to the second half now...
-
Just wanted to say that the Angels 2 part was the BEST show I've seen yet on this series... That was a close call for the Doctor.... Hang On Still trying to figure out what the Doctor meant, when they were back in Amy's bedroom, and he said he had to get her sorted... It's hard to think that the marriage is going to go on now...

Glad you enjoyed the second part love2travel. Told you it was a good'un, didn't I? I thought it was genuinely terrifying, particularly Amy alone in the forest with Weeping Angles closing in around her and not able to open her eyes. We definitely got to see another side of Amy in these two episodes, didn't we. Nice resolution, with the angels being sucked back into the crack in time and never existing. I love the way this arc is being plotted across the season with little clues and glimpses like this, no doubt building to a big finale in Episodes 12 and 13. We've just had Episode 7 in the UK, "Amy's Choice". It's divided opinion on forums I've read since - people have either absolutely loved or hated it. I personally thought it was excellent. Really interesting premise - great idea for a story. Some nice twists and scares, some nice character moments and some real laugh-out-loud scenes. Doctor Who Stage Show Extravaganza From http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com/ (US viewers beware, this site gives the latest Doctor Who news, but is current with UK transmission, so there may be SPOILERS!!). This particular report is spoiler free though:
The Scotsman is reporting that a new Doctor Who Stage Show will tour the UK later this year. The BBC Worldwide show, titled Doctor Who: Here Come The Monsters will be in a similar format to the the successful Walking with Dinosaurs Arena tour last year. The show will take place in a large staged area on the Arena floor and will feature special effects, and video scenes shot with Matt Smith. It will include stage battles between the Daleks and the Cybermen and be accompanied a live orchestra playing music by composer Murray Gold who said "The live element always adds something extra, but these will also be brand new arrangements for a new band of very talented musicians. It's very exciting." Nine venues are to be included on the tour including the Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. The show has been developed in association with executive producer Steven Moffat, who said: "This is everything I ever wanted since I was 11. A live show, with all the coolest Doctor Who monsters, a proper story, and brand new screen material. More details should be available shortly and tickets are expected to go on sale in the next month.

Hi Birthday.... yes, you were right... the Angels show was brilliant!!! I was very nervous having Amy in the forest with all those Angels.... YIKES.... scary.... and when that shield lifted and there were ALL of those Angels... I'm getting goose bumps thinking about it!!! I didn't realize the Angels were sucked back into time and didn't exist.... Wonder if that means it's the end of the Angels? But I'm thinking no.... Well, looking forward to Vampires.... they don't frighten me at all There are alot of those around here in the States Thanks so much for explaining the show.... I seem to miss some of what's going on... But with the Angels show, it's because I only had one eye open Didn't want to get caught looking at any one of those Angels in the eyes....
