He broke it at boy scout camp I think. He talks about it in his book The Macs.

Yes, Mike was using a pulley system designed for moving logs. When it started to speed up, the other scouts tried to slow it down but instead made it slide faster,sending Mike straight into an oak tree. Post operation,he spent four weeks in hospital with his arm is plaster.

4 weeks?! Today they'd fix you up and send you home the same day! I remember when I dislocated my elbow in 1966 I had to spend 3 or 4 days in the hospital which seemed ridiculous to me!
