John Lennon - I'm Losing You (1980 studio footage)

Cool! This is the original recording with Cheap Trick member's Rick Nielsen on lead guitar and Bun E. Carlos on drums. It was deemed too raw or something, so the studio band copied their parts for the LP. I prefer the Cheap Trick version. It's true Rock n Roll.

They also backed Yoko for a savage I'm Moving On.

I have read about that but never heard it. Would LOVE to!

Whoever filmed that drove me nuts with way too many closeups of John's hands/guitar. What the heck kind of guitar was that anyway? Looked like it only had 2 strings! Love the song/this version though!

Nancy there were 2 cameras used that day. One that captured John in long shot/mid shot/closeups etc singing and playing with the band. The other camera was used for "inserts", shots that could be dropped in at editing stage. The footage leaked online comes from this latter vision, hence the close up guitar shots. I hope whatever else there is exists, makes its way out too. The video shoot done at the Hit Factory has become stuff of legend in itself and it's a great (if frustrating) story. Many diehards like myself were unsure if we'd ever see ANY footage from that day. But after 35 years, we have seen SOMETHING. In the context - that's beyond special. But I encourage anybody to get online and look into the story of the lost 1980 Double Fantasy video shoot.

Here is John presumably on the day he recorded I'm Losing You with Cheap Trick, as he appears to be playing a Hamer guitar owned by Rick Nielsen, note the checkerboard neck strap. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh267/HamerTime_2008/LennonsHamer.jpg

A Sardonyx guitar. One of the rarest guitars ever made, there's only 15 to 20 in the entire world: http://www.guitarplayer.com/gear/1012/john-lennons-weirdest-guitar-the-sardonyx/49784

Looking at that "new" footage from Cold Spring Harbour April, and Tavern On The Green, Central Park Oct, it appears to be off the master - first gen source. I smell a rat aboard the magic ship of perfect harmony. FS???

Ha! No rats aboard the magic ship of perfect harmony. A great song too. I love I'm Losing You (as I do all the John songs on Double Fantasy, that I just wish was called Single Fantasy), and also like the original demo. FS?... nothing coming to mind immediately. Gonna have to do some research!

Wow. Love this version of I'm Losing You. Reminds me of Cold Turkey. The production on Double Fantasy has not aged well at all. Sounds very MORish, and I dont think thats what John intended. All his songs sound alike. Its sad when Ono's songs give the album the edge it needs.

I love Fred's story of when he was driving John around the city & John heard "Coming Up" on the radio and was blown away. He stopped at the 1st music store to pick up the MII LP.

I believe that was John's take. That the LP was sounding too MORish with the studio musicians, and I'm Losing You needed a harder rock edge. That's why Jack Douglas brought the guys from Cheap Trick in to play on it, so John could rock on it. Sad this version was nixed for a later, bland version for the LP.

Yeah this version of i'm losing you has been public since being released on the 1998 john anthology box set, but more accessable on the 1998 highlights single cd called "wonsaponatime" which is where i first heard it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon_Anthology I think the highlights disc is great, has harder sounding stuff like the version of i don't wanna face it compared to the milk and honey release.. can really picture julian singing that one - pity it never came to anything, but i'm sure i read once julian even did a version of it in 83/84 but was blocked by yoko, which is when julian first heard that fred had stolen the tapes (though fred's version is he gave it to julian as john wanted that)

I find it very perplexing that John would not already have found a copy of the single and McCartney 2 album in his keep..... sent to him or navigated towards him... In all those years following the Beatles' "dissolution", I cannot believe that Paul would not have procured or been delivered a copy of Imagine before time, or that John didn't find Band on the Run in his pigeon hole (to the young, that's the equivalent of an email inbox) before release, or that neither hadn't heard bits of George in between. I'd be surprised if neither was that unaware of what the other or others were doing, and had to rely on the official releases. Cos they would've had all sorts of eyes on what each were doing, I am sure they were being fed the info from mutual friends or acquaintances.... I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe they did not get advance notice before official release.
