Thanks for the link. A lot of lovely photos there but a strange article that takes an abrupt left turn from celebrating Mary's birthday to reporting Stella's business problems.

Great photo of all.
-
Stella's eyes look like glowing jewels...quite striking... in that big group picture
-
Circa 1974? Mary is seen behind Paul.

How do you get the URL for a photo?
I got dinged again and don't think I quoted a photo.
That photo of the girls in costumes are so adorable.
When you quote a post, before you write your message, double click on that photo & a box will come up showing the url. You need to highlight it & copy (ctrl & c) & then close that box. You are back to the pic. Delete it. Then paste in the url that you found. Then finally you can type your message. Alot of messin around for something that they could automate so we could at least know what someone is talking about. HTH
Thanks so much Oobu, will do that!
Some really sweet photos that Stella posted for Mary's birthday!
The photo of Stella, Paul and Mary looked to be the size of a Polaroid. Really hope I can get to Linda's Polaroid exhibit some time!

Pics and a long article are in there about one of Paul's secret girlfriends, Maggie McGivern. I'd read it before. It's kind of amazing how he could carry on like that while still having an "official" serious relationship with Jane Asher. Maggie, however, made it sound like he would have preferred to marry her instead of Linda, if he'd had the chance. I'm not so sure that's true.

I didn't get that impression at all. What specifically did she say in the story that made you think that she thought Paul would have preferred to marry her? Paul asked her if she thought she'd ever get married. He was just trying to make a decision at that time and because of her vague answer, and the fact that she was 2 or 3 years younger than him, he realized Linda was the one he wanted.
-
Maggie McGivern said Paul visited her late one night and he was crying, was upset. He wouldn't say why. Then the next day or shortly thereafter, she found out he had married Linda. Her implication, I thought, was that he was so conflicted over giving her (Maggie) up for Linda, that he actually cried, he was so upset.
Maggie and Paul carried on for three whole years behind Jane's back (and there were other ladies "on the side"for him). Their secret affair, as she describes it, strikes me as rather amazing. She seemed rather casual about it though, at the time, and he must have been rather casual, since he didn't openly dump Asher for Maggie.
Paul also had a fling with "The Fool" artist and with Francie Schwartz, during this time, as well as with Maggie, and there were others. Including Peggy Lipton, and Linda herself, toward the end. All while he was supposed to be going with Jane ~ ~!! Obviously, well, it makes you think Jane wasn't enough for him...or it was just that he had so many offers, was so popular, "the world at his feet," that he was unable to turn them all down ! Being a bit immature himself at this point. Well, they were all pretty young. He rather sheepishly admitted that both Linda and he had sewed a lot of " wild oats" before they got together and settled down. He said that in the book written by his friend, "All These Years Ago." It was close to an authorized biography with him giving many interviews to its author. Paul didn't mention Maggie at all in that book ! And they'd been sneaking around hooking up for three years ! Maybe he didn't mention any of his "on the side" paramours by name. I can't remember.

........or he realised he had to do what John had done with Cynthia seven years earlier, and marry the girlfriend he'd put in 'the family way'.

There is another, similar account to what you read. Will find the link in a minute. What happened was that 2 days before the wedding, on the night of Mar. 10, 1969, Paul and Linda had a fight/argument, nobody but them knew exactly what about. Paul got into his car and went to Maggie's flat. She said he was crying and he came in, sat down for about 15 seconds and then said "I have to go, I can't do this." Maggie said she read on the 12th about their wedding. In my mind, he realized that he could not cheat on Linda, who was at home, pregnant with his child. It was just an impulsive act, him driving over there. He was crying about the argument he had with Linda, not because he was conflicted over maybe should he marry Maggie. Yes, Maggie was super casual about it and later said she was kicking herself about the way she answered the marriage question he put to her. She should have said "Yes, I'd love to be married someday - to you!"
P.S. Peggy Lipton was in Aug. 1964 and Aug. 1965, but he did call her and mess with her head in June 1968 while Linda was there with him at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

No, Paul had already asked Linda if she wanted to get married when they were in NYC in Oct. 1968. She got pregnant in mid-Dec. 1968 after he suggested she go off the pill. I think he figured she'd marry him if she got pregnant. He was crazy about her!
Plus, Paul spoke to Maggie about marriage in late Aug/early Sept 1968 and Linda arrived in London Sept. 26, 1968 (according to Beatles biographer Mark Lewisohn) So nobody was pregnant yet.

Still, there was no engagement, and the actualy marriage was done at 24 hours notice and even then,it was almost called off the night before. Hardly the best attitude to have for a happy married life. I still maintain that had Linda not been pregnant in March 1969, he wouldn't have married her....at least not at that time anyway. Paul liked to keep his options open but with his girlfriend three months pregnant those options were rapidly collapsing.
I feel sorry for Maggie McGivern in a way, especially when Paul wrote her a song which was clearly sending out mixed messages and showed just how undecided he was in the Autumn of 1968.
Maggie My Dear,
Though I spend my days in conversation,
Please remember me, Maggie my love,
Don't forget me, Maggie my dear.
Hold your head up you silly girl,
Look what you've done?
Take a good look around you,
Take a good look, you're bound to see,
That you and me were meant to be for each other.
Maggie my dear,
You have always been my inspiration,
So please, be good to me,
Maggie my love,
Don't forget me,
Maggie my dear.

Well, we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. And the wedding was planned 2 weeks in advance. You have to get the marriage license and "post the banns" then 2 weeks later you could be married.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banns_of_marriage
Their argument occurred on the 10th, two days before the wedding. The rumor I heard was that it was partially over the fact that Paul had forgotten to buy Linda a wedding band, so he had to get the jeweler to open up special for him the next evening.
Yes, if she had not gotten pregnant so quickly, they wouldn't have married when they did, but I repeat, he wanted to marry her in Oct. 1968 in NYC! He really wanted to adopt Heather as well, and the only way he could do that was if he and Linda were married. And do you really think he wrote Martha My Dear as a veiled song to Maggie? The song was recorded Oct. 4 & 5, 1968 while Linda was in London with Paul (she arrived Sept. 26, 1968) I have never heard that assertion, but I suppose it could be true. I always thought Honey Pie was about Jane. But what about I Will? I know it was first written in India, but it was recorded Sept. 16 & 17, 1968, right before Linda was due to arrive. I thought he may have been thinking of her then.
-
That's interesting--Kestrel thought "Martha, My Dear" was written for Maggie McGivern?? I thought "Maggie" is always short for "Margaret" ? Was her name actually "Martha McGivern"?? Then it could be short for "Martha" as well as for "Margaret"? Wow, my head's spinning... I always thought "Martha, My Dear" was written for Jane Asher ! I'd like it, if it really was for someone different, and not Jane . She's had lots that WERE written for her, inspired by her as the "Muse."
Paul and Maggie messed around for so long, for three years, that it does seem possible he may have composed a song that was secretly inspired by her. I guess. Was it really "Martha My Dear" ? You think? I've always loved that exquisite ditty. Even though Lennon might have considered it part of Paul's (to John's way of thinking) "granny music" ouevre.
No wonder Paul was so confused by his love life, with several ladies involved in it at the same time ! What I mean is, he must have felt somewhat confused by it all, at times. Wow. This really gives me something to mull over. To "Mull of Kintyre" over (laughs). To chew over. Would like to know others' thoughts about this.
Nancy already said a lot about her's, I think. Any more? Wow.

Yes, was originally going to Berlin to see Linda's exhibit and planned on getting the book there. Because we're not doing enough medically to bring our numbers down here, hopefully the exhibit will be extended or go somewhere else in Europe that is safer than here. I'll get the book online.
