I have clear memories of the town where I lived till I was 3, but when I went back to visit a couple of years ago. I didn't recognise anything at all. The mental image I had was totally different. It's possible James has misremembered what happened.

I remember reading somewhere that a picture exists of John and baby James. My bet is the meeting took place in 1978.

Something like that would account for James misremembering what the Dakota appartment looked like, to remember being there at all when he wasn't would be quite different. And I don't think he's saying he remembers John holding him as a baby, he's saying he "knows" it happend (that is, someone told him).
