What I'm doing 3.0 - Second Special Comeback
-
I'm back and forth with this thing of singing while sitting down, but I can somehow get it done. Only I miss singing standing cause it is easier. Well, I have the chance of buying myself in the future a very high table or so, to sing standing while playing the piano.
-
John Fugelsang on Twitter "I've now heard 3 covers of John Lennon's 'Merry Xmas' that cut the 'War is Over' line to avoid offending ppl who like both Christmas & War." well, I didn't but I must admit that my very first thought for these Christmas was not this song but Getsetmane, but I thought it could be sort of ofensive to make that for Christmas... I mean, portraying Jesus like that... but well, it is some kind of Christmas song as is about Jesus. But singing the song is kind of like impersonating Jesus, or so, to sing like if you were Jesus or so, just like in the movie. And I guess religious people won't like that at all... thought it has been done many times at movies, theathre... And today is supposed to be Jesus day... well, here's the song, not me at all, Jesuchrist Superstar Movie

Ollie, looks like you've got your live performance home set-up about right, I dig the rock sound. Anyway just wanted to say nice Happy Xmas (war is over). Classic of all Christmas classics.

yes, well, I've got the audio devices right (I may change the reverb or the equalization... and turn the piano louder. I could do all that even during the show depending on the song, no problem), but not the video, I look like the ghost of me there, lol, so blurry and white... Happy Xmas to you, yes, it is the ultimate Christmas song for me.

hey, you're playing the chords of the song. I found it confusing to play the War is Over notes with the song as I sung so I didn't even try go singing while doing that...

I have answered with our version, lolI've never seen a live Zepplin performance of Rock n Roll, particularly Plant's vocal, that was as good as he did on their record. He never went for the high notes. most are really disappointing IMO. same with that vocal from the Foo's. Here's the definitive. unless you can scream high, why try?

well, I once found one where Plant could kind of sing it. Yes, some performance they did at some high school or so. Well, they do (Led Zep) it because they wrote the song, so they did it as well as they're able or so. My vocals would have been better, yes, if I don't say so I will be doing "false modesty". And Paul would do it better too. I'm no fan of Plant as singer, I mean, I don't think he's one of the great vocalist ever or so. Here's he's trying to sing Innuendo in the Freddie Tribute (not on the DVD)

Ok, I've tested my cam and it does broadcast with TV definition, thought I can't make it record that way... To be exact it broadcasts at 640x480 pixels at 25 frames per second, TV standard except for the new "High Definition". If I broadcasted in HD then I would have to decrease the audio definition. Anyway there's nothing special to see but me here singing... but the TV definition is much better, is kind of more real. Now the only thing between now and my performance is sheer musical rehearsal. I guess that I'll start the show when I feel I'm satisfied with the rehearsals. The setlist I planned for the first day is still supposed to stay the same. Then, for the 2nd day I probably play 2 of my songs and change 2 of the covers... My plan is to do a show each Sunday. But well, maybe I will like so much that I will do more than a show per week... or maybe I will cancel after the first show because lack of audience. I'm thinking of doing "Queen's nights" "Beatles nights" and even "Macca solo nights", or nigths where I'll only play songs written by myself. Too much optimism, I guess, lol. I wish you great music for the next year.

That's cool Ollie, good for you for getting into playing again. You definitely doing it right. You mention rehearsal being the next step. That's what I need to start doing. I don't know if you've noticed but I've posted a lot of videos lately but they are all unrehearsed spur of the moment doodlings. I'm sort of realizing they are actually crap! because they are all incomplete, and I making mistakes, and quality sucks. I'll probably actually take them all down shortly, but it has been fun just posting vids! But I look forward to hearing yours, and I respect the effort it takes to perform a song 'seriously' beginning to end. It's really easy to be doing what I've been doing. I think I'm going to revert back to actually practicing songs and getting them right before just posting candid garbage do the songs (and yourself) justice, you know?

well, I have posted lot of spontaneous stuff too, lol like "the Impossible Duets" neverending series... The only ones I'm perfectionist is when I record the songs I write. For the rest I don't mind much... 3:57 How serious is that? lol
I think that little mistakes, like messing up the lyrics (I'm an expert in those...), or playing some wrong chords are ok... I see it more like a live performance that I record than A RECORD. They're all a single take, not a cut and paste of lot of takes (except for my song I'm Gonna Fall In Love Today, it's almost 9 minute long so doing a single take was complicated...). Anyway I find it hard to take recordings or live performing seriously... well, if one is enjoying doing anything then then it's hard to take that thing seriously, you know? The Beatles weren't serious at the studio and weren't serious at the stage, neither Elvis, for instance. A thing like this for me is like a self kick in the butt, kind of forcing myself to do music and to do it better. Anyway it's kind of ridiculous that I don't care for a recording that thousands can hear and I care for a concert that maybe only a few will watch. Maybe it is because of money, it's like "They're paying 10 cents, I should take it seriously". It's like some extra-respect... if someone listen to your recording and doesn't like it he/she just stops it after some second, most listen only for a minute or so. But If you do a live show people are gonna be there for half an hour. Well, some of you have played in open mic nights, etc so you know the difference... -
In the middle of all this, I've suffered some kind of virus that's going round here, the singer's nightmare, a cold!. I thought it didn't matter and I went "on with the show". Yes, it matters, I can sing but the voice is raspy, it's no good in the long run, it's better for me if I rest until the raspiness is gone.
-
Today I've tried again and still the raspy voice remains... weird but not so weird. I remember long ago I had a cold that got me coughing for 2 months or so, now that was horrible... So, again, I must stop singing. As anyway I should not sing... I've sung kind of light opera (if louder my ears and my head just ache) today, and I've seen I've learn a few things from it. It's quite ironic cause I search the internet for how to "cure" a raspy voice and all I find is "how to get a raspy voice"... I mean the oppossite... lol What I use to do is eating honey... but as my throat doesn't hurt I don't remember to take honey... until I start to sing and I remember there's something wrong. So, to remember myself... A Taste Of Honey

That is funny. as far as being rhaspy, I wouldn't let a cold stop you. unless you nasal passages are plugged up... then you're screwed. but rhaspy, you can always make that work for you. I have really sweet rhaspy days, and its like 'you can do things you normally can't do', if you know what I mean? If I were you I would just set up show and re-record all your songs, starting with most recent and work backwards. and let us hear every one! and I want at least one per day there's a career for you, do that and release them as Ollie underground mix tapes. so are you just more into covers than originals at this point?

Yes, I know what you mean, now all could sing the bridge of Oh Darling with "the smoking voice" as Paul said... but not my thing really. But I can't wait forever :/, this is very annoying, I've listened to my studio tracks of the last thing I recorded (The Happy X-mas thing) and there is no sing of raspiness or anything similar there. And then I used to sing a lot, now I don't sing and my voice is raspy, but it doesn't hurt at all. You know I'm not into recording all my stuff. I just record covers for the sake of recording something, it's easier to record, and kind of easier to be listened. Not even The Beatles used to play their originals much when they were not mainstream and did covers instead... The way it looks like here there's not gonna be a career in music for anyone. No new careers... maybe the already mainstream will go on but, as for new ones it seems pretty impossible. Even if one appears on prime time on TV, as one guy I know did and things are still the same for him. Maybe it's only the situation in Spain that makes me see it all like this. I keep on songwriting though. I only want my normal voice back. I was getting back to it all and that has stopped me...

I might agree with you on the first part, as far as making a career of it. I'm down a path of security right now and have a family and real job resposibilities (actually with a lot of pressure right now ), but outside of that, a life goal of mine is to sell a song. just as of like last year, that is my goal . or at least to network to the point where I know a guy who knows the guy or mayb e I meet 'the guy' who could make that call on publishing a song, just to have the music and find the opportunity, thats cool, we can do that!. and be writing the music you're proud of, so that even if the record companies or publishers think you're not good enough (or say you suck! ), you'll always be able to flip them the bird and rock tunes. :c00l: but selling a song is the goal. for me. and the musicians I work with. that would be sweet. Your Happy XMas was pretty good Ollie can't remember if I ever said that. I do love that song. I don't play a ton of John anymore, when I was really young, 16-20, I used to know more. like I actually do know Surprise Surprise, I promise to record that one next. I makes me sick playing John's songs though casue I SOOOOOO don't do them any justice. I just hear his voice in my head and it makes me not want t0 sing. I'll break out some john covers next. I used to have all his Beatles stuff memorizd; If I Fell, Girl, Norwiegan Wood, Across the Universe, I feel Fine, 1 after 909... I should practice up and do all those live for you guys. that would be fun. but enough about me!

well, the way things are going in Spain in seems there is no way of making a career in ANYTHING , lol maybe you're right and I should start recording a lot of songs, that will sure keep me busy for a long time, for some reason I find it absurd, but also I can think it's absurd NOT to record them or so... yes, I have thought often of selling a song or so... in the end what I am the most is a songwriter. I have get to know "those guys" or sometimes a guy I already know have become one of those guys, but even those guys don't work with record companies now.

I don't like to do it, but, as it didn't get better, I have visited the doctor. My fear (as anyone that uses to sing, I guess) was that it was something about singing but it is something viral. So, well, it would have cure itself with time but the natural cure is something like thyme gargles. Then there are medicines for it, but I prefer to avoid them if possible. It looks like I'll be back soon to normal with no "smoking singer"/"when you told me you didn't need me anymore" sound
-
Dude, go to the doctor, get some viral killing medicine, and get back to recording an album. I'm getting mad over here

I'm doing thyme gargles, and it seems that is slowly getting better, I don't like standard... that's it... mainstream! medicine. I wasn't recording but I was close, just when I was in the mood and had the attitude some virus had to come along... D'you know what? I kind of knew I'll met some unexpected problem. Sometimes I hate to be right.
