Classic Iron Maiden styles btw. that is hilarious, definitely a charming little ballad there. those guys had a way with words for sure great call on the roasting of it. or is that sheer homage being paid?
thanks! Just roasting to be honest. In fact I couldn't really remember how the tune went when I did it. I'd just downloaded the lyrics and sang them as I saw fit, partly based on vague memories of hearing the song!

Two more new songs which I also wrote on that week's holiday
is about being with my 2-year-old daughter is a ballad about the awkwardness of seeing an ex-girlfriend (ironic, as I don't really have a proper ex-girlfriend!) Also new takes of: which is a little minute-long antithesis of "Here Comes The Sun" inspired by the bad weather we have here in Wales in late August And my stripped-down cover of Macca's Also remember to check out if you haven't already: and of course [Penguin[/size">]( ]<strong><span style=) -

Here's one for you to kick around, as you mentioned you wanted an idea for a song; you should write a song about the most painful moment of your life (be it physical or emotional), but make it musically a happy vibe. Or flip it, take the most happy blissful feeling in your life and write a sad or menacing song about it I think you might actually be able to pull off that dichotomy, and I personally would love to hear something like that. I sort of tried this with my song Be Just Fine. A sort of happy sounding song about a really painful experience for me. a therapeutic style choice in a way. And a key thing for me also, as I?ve been thinking about this, would be to describe more the world around you, rather than directly describing your feelings about the moment. If you can convey your own feelings through images in your lyrics, and letting the listener experience the feelings for themselves, more or less? I'd say dang, then you got yourself a song!! Or just write a funk song around the phrase And I Can See Them, those are cool too either or. I am actually listening to Lovers Once right now, nice well put together song. sort of haunting lyric right? thats kind of a crazy lyric! nobody would know that we were lovers once
Wow, that's a pretty complex and demanding starting point for a song! I was hoping you'd say something simple like "camels" or "vegetables"! I'll have to give it some thought. Glad you like Lovers Once. I was quite pleased with the melody, and then came up with the lyrics to fit it.

what ever you do will be sweet also, not worried over here at all juts throwing that out there cause actually I think thats what I want to do myself it really all comes down to the melody in a song anyway. and or the groove you can come up with! for me thats pretty much always what you should shoot for in a song, some sort of melodic groove. for me lyrically I just don't have that much to say anyway, its more about the sounds. when you write do you play it on guitar yourself? then show Magnus etc? or do you just think up the melody and lyrics? I think one where I wrote kind of like you write is my song The Theif 2Beginnings. thats me doing my illwobble impression I'm interested to know if you agree with me on that call? a song similar stylistically to something you might write? I personally dig the tune!
Yes, I wish I could play guitar myself, but I feel a bit old to start from scratch now. I mainly write songs in my head, and I think words and tune tend to come together, driven more by the lyrics, which I scribble down in my notebook. Lovers Once was a bit different in that, like I said, the tune came to me one morning, before any words. I whistled it onto the voice recorder on my cell-phone, because a tune can easily be forgotten especially if there are no words. I wrote Penguin pretty much entirely in my head, and then got Magnus to help me work out the chords, but it was handy for some of the others (Grasshopper, Flaunted Vice, Days With You) to have access to a keyboard to be able to work out the chords myself. I like your Thief song. It has strong lyrics. Are the drums synthesised or real? Do you overdub tracks and stuff? Not sure I really see much similarity to any of my songs tbh. But I suppose yours is just a very different kind of sound, quite grungy. It has a very strong beat and electric guitar riffs there. But one little gripe with the recording: it's a shame the guitar and distortion kind of drowns out the vocals, because like I say, the lyrics are very good. I don't think I could write lyrics like that: there's a lot going on there. But I only REALLY know that because I read them. Sorry, hope you don't mind me getting critical: it's only the production I'm criticizing anyway: the song is solid! I've started work on the song idea you gave me. Not QUITE all the specs you gave but roughly speaking...

KPU, love the idea of you recording this drinking beer in some church! Were you allowed to be in there? Was it even legal to have alcohol on the premises? Maybe you should try and record a new version of this song some time. Although obviously what you REALLY need to do is to write a new song or two. That would be great. Plus obviously your cover of Penguin should be a top priority Thanks for the comments on Days With You. I'll bear that in mind what you say about trying to nail the "BEST days" bit. Have to be careful not to just croon over it and murder the song though!

Sounds like good times! Back then round '94-'99 I was mainly listening to Christian rock bands like dcTalk (don't know if you heard of them. They released 3 really bad Christian rap records in the early 90s and then a really awesome rock record called Jesus Freak in '95). Anyway I'm still a good churchgoer despite everything, and that's where I know Magnus from. We're performing our first mini live set at our Church in a couple of weeks, for all the students and young folk getting free food: probably just Days With You, Hope of Deliverance cover, and Penguin. Do you get to perform your stuff live much / at all? Can't wait to hear Seal My Letter and the possible Penguin cover!!

Hi KPU. I thought at first those noises of kids were some kind of experimental effect you were going for I'll look forward to the next take! As to the chord progressions in Penguin, no I don't think that was conscious at all. I suppose Magnus had been playing Blackbird a fair bit and that may have influenced him, but beyond that, no. Very interesting! Looking forward to your version(s) very much! re. dcTalk, no you might not like them, and they're no longer new. I just wondered if you knew them as they were big in the US Christian scene around that time. They're quite in-your-face Christian but in the best way. What I find funny is the way they release an album as good as Jesus Freak only about 2 years after releasing only really bad cheesy rap albums. Their "Colored People" is a much better race song than Ebony & Ivory anyway, so that's worth a listen.
