"In My Chair" (more jazzy style song)

["In My Chair"[/size">](
]<strong><span style=) This is a demo of a new song I'm working on, more jazzy and with a laid-back feel. Very excited to identify and work out what diminished and augmented chords are whilst working on this! Featuring my friend Magnus on acoustic guitar. Lyrics: The sound you never want to hear The sound of screaming, the sound of panic Splits like an axe into your ear While you're just dozing in your chair It's time to wake up Before it all starts going wrong You'll get away with doing nothing But not for very long It's time to wake up Face up to your fears Or you may wake to the sound of panic There's something going on out there But I'm just hoping that no one needs me I'm sitting comfy in my chair Neglecting all responsibilities -
Interesting! I really like the jazz style! I'm going to have to try and write one like that! You've inspired me! Well done! haha

Great stuff! Delighted to have inspired you! This originally was the one I was worried sounded too much like A Certain Softness. You can hear a bit in the opening melody, but it's pretty different now! I'd like to work on this some more, tighten up the vocal and rhythm and maybe try to add some more instruments on. But I'm still pretty clueless about using Audacity for adding and mixing tracks. Half the time I can't even work out how to select a single track even, but need to learn. Any advice? By the way, did you also listen to my really rubbish bodily function-related song? Any inspiration there at all?

in my chair!

Nice, way to work in the hardcore yawns at the end! Actually quite effective! And somehow you pull off using the word comfy great chords and guitar work again by Magnus. Jeez. You know whats cool, when he gets more rhythmic toward the end, like 1:50 on. Sounds really good. The music on that is very interesting, well played. now that you say it I hear similarities in the chords to A Certian Softness, but don't think I would make the connection otherwise. not a rip off

Good that you don't think it's too much like Certain Softness, after all I know how much you despise that song! Glad you approve the yawning and use of the word "comfy". And yes, Magnus is an amazing musician, and I think he enjoyed having something a bit different to do here.

Hmm I don't know if I could draw any inspiration from a song about athletes foot. haha Still, there's a solid tune there...!

You're raising the bar, Jon. Nice melodious jazzy guitar-playing by Magnus for sure.

Thats what I said, actually after hearing his other tune Jonathan I said something like that. I don't know how many songs you've written to this point illwobble, or if these are pretty much all of them.. but I think you can see obvious strides being made almost in each one now. at least breaking new ground in successful ways. thats cool, you've got a bunch more good songs in you I'm sure.

Thank you! I was thinking the same thing until I wrote my best song yet and these three guys online just ripped it apart and completely mushed it up! I used to love composing when I was very young. My most ambitious composition by far was an instrumental piece for a jazz band, when I was about 15-17. Most things I wrote back then were fairly jazzy, but this one took YEARS to finish: I entered it note by note onto a stave on a computer program. About 10 parts, later reduced to 7 or 8. If you have a decent MIDI sequencer on your computer you can have a listen. If you hear things vaguely resembling drums, cymbals, trumpets, sax and a piano then it's fine! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60162873/Jelly_Jazz_Jon_Stammers_1997.mid

New improved take of the song now uploaded:
-
Quite a nice little tune there and the guitar part is interesting. A pity you can't add some other instruments - eg. strings to fill out the textures. What recording device did you use? The guitar is very close-miked and a bit of distance or reverb may cover the scratchiness of the tone (at times).

Oh, thanks very much, Adrian! It was recorded on a little Zoom recorder. Yes, I was planning to attempt to put some strings on it at some point (well, a viola part anyway, since my wife plays one), if I can figure out how to do the overdubbing or mixing or such things. All new to me...

I think the next stage for you is to start using a sequencer like Cubase and importing your audio into there. You can do far more editing and polishing with it. The other thing to do is to invest in some good string VST samples like Wix uses which you can use through cubase - you can get a really good sound for your money today. This is what I do. Any tips or advice you need, let me know as I have this all set up for my music.

In one of my first experiments in sound mixing, I got my lovely wife to play a viola part over the track, and put it together. Sounds ok!
-
Yeah sounds nice, like the viola.
-
Very good - a big improvement. You could make this song really good with some audio editing tricks and more reverb on the vocals.
