Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

left hand man:
I've seen One Hand Clapping, and it's lifeless and sterile. The video of Juniors Farm from that performance is evidence, they are all just standing around, none of the energy of a truly live performance. Have you guys forgotten, this is rock and roll, it's ment to be performed in front of people, not standing around playing to four walls?? Charlie D, your setlist is pretty good, it still contains too many Beatles songs and it doesn't contain enough of McCartneys fantastic Wings and solo rockers.
I would love to see the set list mixed up more as much as anyone but there is no way he will not do at least 15-20 Beatle songs. The key would be to throw in a few Beatle songs he never performed and totally mix up the Wings/Solo stuff. I would like to see 4 songs from MAF because he has not done these on tour yet. I think "Mrs. Vanderbilt" would be a nice addition since it sounded great in Kiev. I think he can replace "Jet" with something like "About You" from DR. IMO - "C Moon" can be replaced by anything, I would kind of like to hear "Take It Away" from "Tug Of War". I believe he usually does between 32-35 songs. So if he changes and does 4-5 different Beatle songs and totally changes most of the Wings/Solo stuff that would make it about 15 songs that would be entirely different. At this stage of McCartney's career, I would settle for this type of change.
-
Yesterday is a nice song, but I kinda get sick of it. Same with Blackbird. Not that I don't like the songs, I do like 'em, but they starting to annoy me. Unlike Sgt. Pepper and Hey Jude. But I know Paul likes Yesterday really much, so that one should stay in. Then they can change Blackbird for That Was Me, or some other song. ...I like something (as performed at the concert for George) also very much.

Ever-Present-Paul:
I just saw part 1 of the Kiev concert, And he's doing a whole new setlist then he normally does.
That's good. Maybe he finally paying attention to what is being written on this board.

Do you think Paul really looks at this board? If that's the case: Hi Paul

I like to think that every once in a while, he'll check in here. I'm sure at times he must be at least curious.

Probably. Do you think Paul is really left hand man ?? No offence left hand man if you read this but it was just a thought. ops: I reckon Paul sits in his office on a Friday afternoon with his feet up on the desk reading the board. I like to think that Paul does occasionally read this board but he's a busy man. And hello to Paul if you are reading this. And Paul if you do read this, the clock on your board is an 1 hour slow!! (sorry but I only noticed when I visited a few days ago on my lunch break! ops: ) But back to topic: Good set list by the way Charlie D. EverPresentPaul - I would love to hear Got to get you into my life in a set list but not C Moon. To be honest I'm not really keen on C Moon. I wish Paul would do more Wings like Maybe I'm Amazed but less of the Beatles tracks. Maybe I'm just being a bit picky tonight but I would rather hear songs that I don't know yet. (apologies for not knowing all your songs if you reading this Paul ops: )
-
I don't like 'C moon' really much, too. And I think it's a great thing to not-know all Paul's songs. On that way you often hear about a song on the board wich you don't know. Then you go to youtube, search for the song and listen to it. On that way you learn all new old songs BTW: I'm lefthanded too But I play righthanded guitar

To all the young fans clamoring to hear basically the same concert that's been played for about the last 20 years, have a listen to all of Paul's musical output, Beatles, Wings and solo. Then make sure you also listen to Paul's live albums since the 1989/90 Flowers In the Dirt Tour "Tripping the Live Fantastic", "Paul Is Live", "Back in the U.S. 2002", "Back in the World", watch "Get Back", "New World Tour", "PM in Red Square" and "The Space Within US". After all this, you'll probably see where some of us on this thread are coming from. While it's undeniable that the songs he's been playing are fantastic, some even iconic to the point that it's unthinkable he wouldn't play them live at every concert for the rest of his days, when you hear a song over and over for so many years, it kind of takes the edge off of whatever made them special to begin with. So, while many of the young fans may have never heard a song live (and would obviously like to), many of McCartney's more experienced fans have probably heard it at least once before. Just like a new hit on the radio, you want to hear a great song again and again, many times, but after awhile, it starts to get old. While in a young or older infatuated fans' perspective, some songs could still be heard again without problem, from another person's perspective, these songs have already been heard too often (been there, [heard] that). Now, while I wouldn't want to deny anyone the thrill of hearing and seeing a classic song performed for the first time, given Paul's output on live recordings and on concert films which already documents his past output, I would put forth the notion that reaching into his vast and excellent catalog of songs, McCartney could easily be able to make a fresh show AND please his many older AND new fans. Of course, if you still haven't heard enough versions of Back in the U.S.S.R., C-Moon, Coming Up, Drive My Car, Eleanor Rigby, Fool On the Hill, Got to Get You Into My Life, Here There & Everywhere, Hey Jude, Jet, Lady Madonna, Let Me Roll It, Let 'Em In, Live and Let Die, Maybe I'm Amazed, My Love, Sgt Pepper, We Can Work It Out, Yesterday; then I'm sure you can look forward to the fact that Paul will keep playing at least some of them every time. I just hope it's not all of them all the time. But that's just my opinion viewed from my perspective. And to all the [fans?!?] that would be happy listening to Paul singing from a phone book, I suggest the following start a separate thread pleading Paul to do a "Yellow Pages Live Tour". That way, when he comes to your town, he'd sing from YOUR phone book! You'd be happy getting YOUR wish, and since each show would be original, I'd be happy getting MY wish! D Just joking [almost].

Thank you vlivantje. That's technology for you but please don't even mention computers to me at the moment as mine has been playing up with the server not working. Still at least it gets me out of doing any paperwork (if only). Sorry Paul! ops:

People think we are bashing his Beatle stuff but it is also the some of the same Wings songs over and over. Even "Live and Let Die" with its "fireworks" has become old and stale. I love "Jet" as much as any fan but believe it has been done on every McCartney tour and can be replaced. At least the two songs above are good songs, I never understood why "C Moon" was constantly performed. (guess McCartney loves the song) I believe if he did 15 Beatle songs in a show it would satify most Beatle fans and still give McCartney plenty of songs to make his setlist fresh and exiting.

Here's my set-list,just to show that Paul could put together a great set of songs covering his whole career without falling back on the same songs time after time. So Glad To See You Here Juniors Farm Listen To What The Man Said Magic I Want To Break Free Distractions One Of These Days And I Love Her Oh Darling Monkberry Moon Delight With A Little Luck Tomorrow Waterfalls Here There And Everywhere Two Of Us Daytime Nightime Suffering I'm Carrying She's Given Up Talking Mrs Vandibilt Lovely Rita No Value Hi Hi Hi Move Over Busker Only Mama Knows Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five. The above set still makes Paul an 'oldies act' of course but at least in the main there are old songs that are seldom if ever performed live.
-
In your setlist, there is no song of the old setlist. I think there has to be some, I think Paul has a good reason why he takes this setlist. He takes song wich he knows people in the audience like, en where they can sing alon with (Hey Jude). I also want 'Sgt. Peppers/The End' in the setlist!
-
Ever-Present-Paul:

Oh definately,Paul would never do a complete change....on every tour he's ever been involved with I believe there's been some continuation of songs from one tour to the next, like 'My Love','Bip Bop', 'Wild Life' & 'The Mess' from the 72 University tour to the main European one that summer. But my point was that, should he wish to,Paul could put on a wholly entertaining concert made up of less performed songs. I certainly wouldn't decide not to go to a concert simply because there was no 'Hey Jude' to sing along too or there was no 'Yesterday' or whatever but I might think twice about going if I'm just going to get a repeat performance of the last live dvd.

I Want To Break Free
Uh, what?

McCartney is always going to perform the song yesterday, in fact it's the one and only Beatle song that he has to perform tour after tour. Yesterday is the most covered song in the history of popular music so he will always do that one. The problem with many setlist suggestions is that people tend to leave out his Wings and solo singles. I want his setlist to change but I think the singles he released should definitely be included, some songs may be the B-side, but they were on a single. Juniors Farm The Mess Getting Closer Take It Away Hi Hi Hi Stranglehold Listen To What The Man Said Only Mama Knows I've Had Enough Girlschool The World Tonight No More Lonely Nights Silly Love Songs Of course this is just some of his singles, and obviously McCartney thought it was very good material that's why he released them in single form, so any change in his setlist should I think include these songs. They are the songs he released to the world, so they would be more familiar to people.

You do know that all the songs you listed with the excepiton of "Only Mama Knows" would be considered a "oldie" so he would still be doing a "oldie setlist". If he did around 10 songs from DR, CHAOS and MAF than at least he would be doing a bunch of songs he wrote in this decade.

Talking about "oldies"... All this whining and complaining and pleading about set lists gets very old--!!! The majority of fans at a Macca concert are thrilled to be there no matter what's played, isn't that right?

I totally agree - it's getting really boring now. We all know by know we all have our own opinion on what we would like Paul to play, can we just let this thread lie?? The same thing is getting said over and over.
