Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

The set list argument on both sides is valid. However, I would bet $1000 that the majority of people at every single concert he plays are seeing him for the first time.
I doubt the majority of people are first timers! There are just a heck of a lot of "suits" & booby girls that they give tickets to. But I would venture to say that most of the people are fans. Why did people gather in England to see him in Anfield from all over the world? Those were fans! And I wish he would give us fans more than Beatle tunes. Why does he dismiss his other bodies of work? Big Barn Bed Soily Letting Go Spin It On Rainclouds... don't get me started..............................

Anfield was a very special occasion so of course diehards came in from all over the world, but we were talking more about his tour shows. I personally know of about 10 people who saw him for the first time within the last few years (and I don't hang out with suits, trust me!). You can just tell at the venue when people have/haven't. And many people (mainly from Liverpool) that I spoke to on Sunday had never seen him before. But you'd also be surprised by number of people who posted in the Anfield gig thread in this very forum who said it was their first Paul gig as well...

Eric In Boise, you're absolutely right, but I'm not talking about more Beatles, we've had enough Beatle heavy setlist, and let's be honest on the few occasions when McCartney does change his songs it's still predominantely Beatles! How about changing out the Wings and solo material even more, that's what I'm talking about.
Unfortunately, there are not enough fans like you at his concert who love more than just his Beatle work or a couple of Wings songs. I wish he would play more songs off his solo records. It would be nice to hear "Tug of War" or "Take It Away" for the first time. I would enjoy hearing things like "My Brave Face" or "Hope of Deliverance" again. Wouldn't it be cool to hear McCartney rock out to "Angry" or "About You". I am sure this would bore the first time McCartney concer goers but I would love it, think you would also !!

If Paul wants to sing more BEATLES songs, there are still plenty he hasn't performed: And I Love Her (apart from the Unplugged performance) Another Girl Every Little Thing (I know John does vocals, but it's a McCartney-penned song) Honey Pie Lovely Rita Martha My Dear Maxwell's Silver Hammer Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da Oh! Darling Rocky Raccoon The Night Before When I'm 64 Why Don't We Do It in the Road? A proper version of You Never Give Me Your Money Your Mother Should Know Although of course I'd like to see him do more post-Beatles stuff...

I totally don't agree that people wouldn't want to hear more of the Wings and solo material. Paul McCartney has #1 hits that he's never performed, they were #1 hits because people absolutely loved them. It's like some of you have just been hypnotized by the myth that people only want to hear the Beatles, that's just not true, if McCartney would just perform some of these fantastic songs people would be reminded of how great they are. I'm not talking about some deep obscure album track, I'm talking about songs that were in the top ten, songs that people all over the world put into the top ten. No one is going to be upset when McCartney rocks the crowd with a great song like Juniors Farm. There's just absolutely no excuse for dragging out the same setlist year after year, tour after tour! As I keep saying, it's always going to be someones first time seeing McCartney, does that mean he has to perform the same songs for the rest of his life? How terribly boring is that!
-
I think a big part of the problem regarding Paul sticking to the same songs tour after tour isn't so much that he's repeating the songs at the actual concerts but that because those concerts/tours are recorded and made available on tv/dvd/cd etc. If those formats didn't exist and the only possible time to see Paul performing live was at the event itself then I guess people wouldn't be so bored at hearing (for example) 'Live And Let Die' or 'Hey Jude' again if they were hearing them four or five years apart each time.
-
I have to say this & then I will shut up so don';t bother having a go at me as I shall ignore it. This ripping Paul to shreds because he does not sing what you all feel he should is completely inappropriate. You have a right to your opinions but it is now going further than that & its not on. Leave the man alone. Be VERY grateful that he does it. The way you lot carry on about it I would not blame him if he reads this that he thinks THATS IT I'm retiring. He would likely feel extremely unappreciated & who could blame him !!!

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Honey Pie and Your Mother Should Know (best song off MMT in my opinion) would be amazing!! But I agree with Susan Hickman. I am happy just to get the chance to see him live, probably the first and only time.

If you don't like the setlist then don't go and let the real fans go!!!!

It's not the same setlist. In 2005, nearly 45% of the songs had never been performed on a US tour. Get your facts straight.

It is 5 long years since Paul played the UK (therefore we haven't had helter skelter, too many people, etcetc from the last few tours), if you don't count the mini-hardtogetin- tiny promo shows last year then from the liverpool set these 6 songs have never been playedin the UK before. 1. Hippy Hippy Shake 4. Flaming Pie 10. Dance Tonight 13. In Liverpool 14. I'll Follow The Sun 24. A Day In The Life Yes i admit, i would love more variety when it come to his next tour (more solo, wings, diff beatles.. and i agree with those who said he could cull some of the regular beatles songs and most casuals wouldn't mind as long as he kept x-y-and-z).. but i will go no matter what i admit that too.. But for a one off return to liverpool show i think the set was pretty much what most of the audience wanted. We'll have to see on the next UK tour, 5 years is a long wait and i hope he plays up north (hello Manchester!) as well as london.

Can anyone please tell me ... is there anywhere I can actually see past set-lists to check what Paul played when and where? I'm interested to know what I've seen him do as I never kept a list. Here's a crazy idea. Seeing as how we've had Something and now A Day in The Life - how about a Paul concert where he sings Beatles' songs that John, George and Ringo originally sang? That would be something.

Try this: http://www.macca-central.com/macca-concerts/index.php For the set list to each show, click on the name of the city.

It's a nice site, but there are some errors. For whatever reason, the 1993 tour doesn't have very accurate setlists posted online. Many websites claim to list the setlist for that tour, but almost all of them get it wrong (this one, "Plugged" and wikipedia among them). Example: the US dates included "Fixing A Hole" & "Long & Winding", but these are often omitted, despite the fact that recordings from those shows demonstrate the songs were played...
-
I saw Paul at two Earls Court shows in '93, but he didn't play Fixing A Hole or Another Day. I think he changed a few songs around when he played the UK ,from his shows in the US.

All I can say is thank you Paul for making the 30th time I've seen you in concert to truly be one to remember. The whole show and atmosphere was perfect and Liverpool truly is the center of the universe.

jwl - here's to 31, 32, 33, etc. so glad to hear what a great time you had.
