Hi, I've been a vegetarian for about 4 years. Last year I started karate(I'm a blue belt now!) and we train pretty hard. As a result, I always get hungry even while I'm sitting doing nothing(like now ).These days I'm thinking of being a vegan, at least a lacto-vegetarian for a while, but I wonder if I can keep up without eggs and milk as an 'athlete'. I saw some vegan athletes on the net, but they seem to use protein supplements. I'm not a professional, so I really worry about it. Any experiences? Or any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I also do Shotokan Happy to find a fellow karateka here. It's so bad your cousins have such an illness like lactoseintolerance. Do they also do sports? It's a bit difficult in my neighbourhood to find protein resources like tofu, natto, vegan cheese etc. so I worry if I can't keep my performance high. I tried not eating eggs for one week, but it did not last longer They are in everything!

No problem... was vegan for two tyears but missed cheese. Great way to stay in shape I used to do 4 hours of Shotokan 5 days a week, jog 5 miles a day.. and practice a minimum of 4 hours of drumming per day for at least 5 years. after Shotokan I did a few more years of Kyoshunkai. Keep it up GREAT way to stay in shape. If you try jogging you'll notice how much easier the rest is to do... just do your jodgging on the grass as it's less hard on the knees and ankles, 5 times around a football field equals one mile.

I take my lessons in my university dojo in Turkey. I thought your cousins were bigger Could you suggest foods that include fundamental nutrients for me? For example, if I only ate grains and nuts for protein, would it be enough? I cannot think of giving up milk, because it is what I live on. As for eggs, what can be a real substitute(except tofu)?

So, I should search for tofu in my neighbourhood. I could find it before, but it is expensive and hard to find. When I eat eggs, I feel so bad about the chickens forced to produce more and more eggs (after Sir Paul McCartney's Glass Walls video) and I also think I cannot take enough nutrients if I don't eat. Maybe it's just another prejudice like other people have about eating flesh.

Wow, that's quite a bit! Could you please inform me about your diet?

If it's expensive don't buy it often but every once in a while and when you do marinate it first unless it will taste like crap my sister says that it does and plus if there's recipes you love but with meat substitue it for veggi's and there's also boca burgers and if there's a meal plan for vegans/vegitarians sign up or bring the subject up with the head of food person who ever that is at the university. Oh andthe boca burgers are from morning star so hope that helps
