i have just (not for the first time) watched a documentary about the questionable health benefit of milk and dairy products ... not only do they connect milk with cancer and asthma. what worries me a WHOLE LOT more is the treatment of the cows. it tears me apart inside when i see how people treat their fellow creatures. as if they were machines. they showed an auction and all that mattered was how many liters (up to 40!!!! per day) the cows would deliver ... so they would not milk them for one day and polish their udders to make extra profit .... this is sooo wrong!!! it makes me so sad and angry ... and many people don't even see anything wrong with that! it just breaks my heart

--- i know it's in german, but maybe you will understand anyway. i just want this madness to end. hugs jj

I've recently read this article: http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/dairy-farming-in-europe-effiency-paramount-as-eu-quotas-expire-a-954750.html it's heartbreaking how the future looks for the cows...

        appreciate

yeah i know. sometimes i think it's a blessing to be lactose intolerant. i am FORCED to pay attention, i have to check everything i buy for hidden lactose, and since then (about 10 yrs ago) i have realized how much powdered milk and other ingredients derived from milk are (heavily) used in industrial produce, especially convenience products which i rarely buy. if it was just about milk, cheese and butter ... but that's only a fraction of the many uses of cow's milk. MOST OF IT ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY!!!! no one in the world needs all of those artificial yoghurts and functional foods that are heavily advertised. you wouldn't believe how MANY products contain lactose or other milk constituents. and what about the cheese production leftovers? expensive disposal? no way, let's feed it to people and call it whey drink, super healthy and all.... i am sick and tired of the food industry and it's ruthless ways. i do my best to inform people i know and to call their attention to the matter, but most of them don't seem to care. they do not look at the back label and the list of ingredients. they prefer to judge the product by the front label and it's nice pictures. it makes me speechless. this "it'll go away if i close my eyes" mentality is what enables the industry to treat animals the way they do and forces farmers to do the same. people around me get annoyed if i even try to point out animal suffering. no wonder, kids are not told those stories in their books are they, those stories go "the cow gives us healthy milk, it doesn't care and just makes moo" i do buy milk for my kids, but we go to an organic store where it costs about 1.75? and it's not so often we buy milk. it's really hard to against public opinion, especially with kids. that was a lot and i'm sorry for ranting but it really p***** me off when so many people don't give a s***. (sorry for the language). hugs jj

Most of the books about skin problems say that dairy is not good, and should be avoided. I think it's the estrogen and other hormones that can affect the skin.

Jordan Ruben brings up that every culture with longevity consumes cultured dairy products. Vegans don't distinguish between cultured and not, but it's important. It's chemistry

it's not really about consuming dairy products and it's health benefits or the lack of it .... it's about the treatment of the cows. making animals suffer for profit --- that is really sick. but maybe you DO have to step back to see much of the madness in our so-called SOCIETY. (with"you" i mean everyone, me as well - i read it again, and it sounded like an accusation which it isn't)

I know vegans who think that even having pets is slavery. That's a bit extreme. without me, my cat would be homeless

i am not vegan. i just refuse to support industrial-scale livestock farming. but being lactose-intolerant , it makes me wonder, if we are supposed to consume dairy products at all. being vegetarian is natural to me, since i love fruit and veg, so it's pretty easy. hugs jj x

I recently discovered an allergy to milk and have to read labels carefully too now. I learned something interesting - drug companies aren't required to label their medications like we see with food. The leaflet that comes with my medication does not list the "inactive" ingredients. I finally discovered the nih website that does list all ingredients and found lactose in my medication! I was surprised to learn that many meds have it.

it's a cheap filler or carrier substance. and, by the way, it is a lot cheaper for companies to sell it to people as "super healthy food" than to dispose of it. you know, i think it's this hidden lactose and the amount of it that makes more and more people lactose intolerant. me, i've always had it, at least since my teen years, but no one told me. in fact, i had to tell the doctor what test to run - i figured it out myself at home first, and of course, i was right. i don't think she would have thought of it herself. it sounds arrogant, but sadly, it is the truth. it was really bad after an antibiotic i got for a flu (what??? - yeah right) - i had trouble with all sorts of carbs or sugars like fructose and so on. i couldn't even drink rice or soy "milk". it's alright now. but it took about half a year. no fruit, no meat, no dairy, hardly any bread --- wow, what DID i eat? i don't know. potatoes and veggies i suppose. but the best thing is - my headaches are gone. my skin is in a better condition and and i often had swolen fingers and knees - gone too (not the fingers, but the swellings and pains) --- so milk is definitely not for me. but - i do use lactose free products - in moderation. whenever i'm shopping i am AMAZED at the amount of food in the aisles. they don't sell all that do they? today, i was looking for frozen vegetables WITHOUT butter or sauce, well how did that turn out? i'll tell you: 3 freezers full of ice cream and cake, 7 full of meat and fish (that's the deep freezers - there are 6 freezers with fresh meat) and 1 of veggies, half of it convenience food. 'nuff said. hugs jj x

Of course they dont sell it, all this overproduction is simply disgusting! where you're from by the way, the US? My impression from various parts of Europe is that vegetables are getting more and more popular, also all types of vegan products, not to mention the gluten-free craze. Go vegetables!!

It is sad to walk into a large grocery store and realize that so much of the stuff inside is stuff I wouldn't consider food - no nutritional value. They they cram in additives to say it has x grams of fiber or y grams of protein so it much be good for you. Right.

my opinion - but you don't HAVE to buy it, there's a lot natural stuff out there. it's just not as shiny. i raise my kids in such a way that i try to explain to them what proper food is. it's not good keeping them away from the commercial world. i try to make them look behind the shiny plastic world. there's so much fake stuff out there, it's unbelievable. i try to raiuse awareness on my facebook account too, but - sadly - no one cares about it. well, sometimes it's great to be considered crazy - they leave you alone and you can do what you want hugs jj x ps. i'm the crazy one????? look around you, please.

funny , peta germany just posted something about milk today: https://www.facebook.com/PETADeutschland http://www.veganblog.de/2014/07/16/sechs-fakten-ueber-milch-und-wie-man-sie-ersetzen-kann/ http://www.peta2.de/web/7_dinge_die_ihr_ueber.1491.html i'm sure, that's on the english version too. i just haven't looked. i think everyone should read about it, and then decide what to do. everyone who consumes milk produced THIS way should watch this. just as everyone eating meat should watch (http://mediathek.daserste.de/sendungen_a-z/799280_reportage-dokumentation/22389000_exclusiv-im-ersten-deutschlands-ferkelfabriken]this documentary about pigs. it's old news, really, but the [url=http://www.welt.de/wirtschaft/article130171246/Das-grausame-Sterben-in-Deutschlands-Ferkelfabriken.html), as if most people don't know how animals are kept. maybe they really don't. it's time to wake up then. it's beyond me how someone can treat any living soul this way and sleep alright and think it's perfectly normal. what a blind world. hugs jj x

I wish they'd make school-aged kids, maybe 15 years old, do a month on a farm somewhere. What could be more important for education than learning about where our food comes from? A rotating group of helpers would mean less reliance on machines and less cost for upkeep. No fast food either for a month - imagine that. Instead, working while learning about food and how to prepare it.

Yes, i totally agree. Even younger kids - children are so sensitive - if only they could see what happens on a farm - i'm sure they'd make the right choice when allowed to.
