Elvis Presley

Today in Elvis Presley History 1992 - The U.S. Postal Service announced the commemorative stamp booklet that would include Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Clyde McPhatter, Dinah Washington, and Otis Redding. 1994 - In Memphis, TN, Michael Jackson, Lisa Marie Presley and Janet Jackson attended the all-star "Elvis Aaron Presley - The Tribute."* *=by the way...I was there!

Cool so what happened there Auds? Did they sing some Elvis songs?

I was an editor for a regional rock magazine at the time, and I covered the concert in Memphis. EVERYBODY was there! -- from members of Elvis' bands to Melissa Etheridge, INXS, Iggy Pop, Heart, Mavis Staples, Eddie Rabbitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Ray Cyrus (who totally butchered "One Night"), L7 (remember them?), Tony Bennett, Carl Perkins and many, many, many more... ...it was a gas! Great, great night. The newlywed Jacksons and mom-in-law Priscilla were in a balcony unbeknownst to the audience until a spotlight was put on them toward the end of the show. MJ "acted" shy, as if he weren't enjoying the screams from the audience (insert eye-roll here). Also, it was at that show that I learned the sheer power of concert beer. Potent stuff, baby.

I forgot that MJ was once Elvis' son in law. Some cool names there, all of them performing? Which acts were best?

Actually, it was Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, etc.) that brought down the house. He performed Elvis' King Creole/'68 Special monster "Trouble." Dwight Yoakam's version of "Mystery Train" was sick! In the good way, of course. Melissa Etheridge did "Burning Love" very, very well. Also, Scotland's Wet Wet Wet (I'm sure I was the only person there who knew who they were) got one of the best rounds of applause ("It's Now Or Never"). As a dedicated Elvis fan, I knew every song. Mac Davis performed "Memories," including the verses that Elvis omitted from his version. I'm sure I'm forgetting some good'uns.
-
New trivia question: Besides, Kathy Westmoreland, which backing vocalist did Elvis have a crush on -- and was trembling with nervousness when the two of the slow-danced in his private suite?

That was October '94. That was a good time to be an Elvis for another reason, too: Albert Goldman kicked the bucket that month, too.

This is a classic. No way you can not laugh with The King:
Why (and how?) does the background singer (Cissy Houston?) keep on "ooohing"? LOL! I think that cracked him up too!

I think I saw that show on TV. I remember Wet Wet Wet's singer singing It's Now Or Never.

Hint: Her group provided the backing vocals on Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl."

Elvis: "Sing it, baby!" LOL! Urban legend has it that Elvis saw in the audience that a man's toupee fell off of his head, and that's what made Elvis completely lose it.

So the group was not the same one that Kathy W was in? (Sweet Inspirations?) Was she black?
-
Yep! And she was gorgeous. She died of cancer a couple of years ago. Another hint: she married Jerry Schilling, Elvis' best friend.
-
Crap, I have no idea who he was married to, but when you tell the answer I'll probably know her.

Myrna Smith.

Here she is on stage with Elvis in 1972. Skip to 01:07 (she is sitting next to Kathy Westmoreland):

Myrna Smith.
Hmmm...vaguely remember her.

Maybe this will jar your memory: "Chick-a-bom-chick-a-bom-chick-a-bombom-bop-puh-bom-bombom." Helpful?

You sure got rhythm, mate!

Oi Auds, go watch the interview in the Morrissey thread. I'm very lonely in there (irony?).
