About Robert Plant
-
My guess would be a combination of singing improperly and over-touring.
-
His pants were tighter in the early days.

I still really loved those striking, ubiquitous Mtv music vids of Plant's set in the American desert and his album then, and later have appreciated his more recent surprising ventures with bluegrass singer Allison Krause. Plant still seems very viable as an artist who takes new different directions and explores different styles. I hope he comes out with more surprises
Of course my friend!! Robert is an amazing artist. But I was talking about the change in his voice.

Most of us have a pretty good idea what religion he is.

^ I knew you'd find the humor in that. I wonder if natural aging hasn't played a part as well as lifestyle changes concerning Robert's voice. It seems like his voice has matured over the years?

Don't know what you're on about Physical Graffiti because it has some of Plant's best vocals. But he was injured in a car crash in '75, and he was still recovering when they made Presence. So his voice may not have been at its peak on that one. I still love that album though.

Hi everyone! Being a LED ZEPPELIN fan, I think that his voice sounded great in all of the studio albums. There is a rumor circulating, I don't know how true it is so please don't quote me, but I heard somewhere that Plant had a throat operation in 1973, any truth to that? In all of the studio albums, Plant was awesome!!! However, live after 1973, Plant's voice changed in a way that he would not hit the high notes on songs such as "Over The Hills And Far Away," "Rock And Roll," "Black Dog" and "Stairway To Heaven" just to name a few. Please don't get me wrong, Plant was still fabulous live but his voice did go through some changes by the time 1975 came around. In my opinion, I truly believe that Physical Graffiti is Plant's greatest vocal work ever! "Kashmir," "In The Light," "Custard Pie," "The Rover," "In my Time Of Dying," "The Wanton Song," these songs are just some songs on the Physical Graffiti which really bring out the best in Plant's vocal ranges at the time. It is also my opinion that Plant's voice was changing as he was getting older.

I have read many more rumors on numerous forums that state that Robert Plant had surgery in early 1974 to remove nodes on his vocal chords. If this is true, that would explain why he didn't hit the high vocal ranges from 1975 on although he still sang great!

I am a big fan of Robert Plant. I think his voice after the 70's was still tremendous. You he had a lot of tragedy with his son dying as a very young child and he went on a spiritual journey afterward. Then John Bonham's death. I think his solo album "Burning Down One Side," "Pictures at Eleven," others on the 1980's and early 90's, his voice was strong. Here is one of obscure to most but one of my personal favorites: Slow Dancer - Pictures at Eleven (1983)
Great vocal range. Also last I saw him in 1998 with jimmy page at the "walking into clarksdale" tour, He walked around with a bottle of water in his hand all the time and lived clean. He sounded great then too. I also love his new material but have not had the chance to catch him as he was playing very small venues that sold out in minutes! Angel Dance : -

He rarely if ever hit the high notes in concert that are on the studio recordings. Imagine singing The Immigrant Song night after night. That would surely shred your vocal chords!

Hi beatlesfanrandy! Up to 1973, Plant would hit the high notes almost every night! Even then, when his vocals were shredded, there were nights when he would rest his voice by not hitting the high notes. You are right beatlesfanrandy, it is almost impossible for Plant to hit the high notes of "Immigrant Song" every night of every tour, he would most definitely shred his singing voice sooner than you think. Take care.

One thing I like about Robert Plant is that he is deeply spiritual. In case people don't know then lyrics to Slow Dancer here they are: Slow dancer - no answers For you new moves to see Fast talker in dark corners For you new words to hear Sly glances - half chances For you the eye that sees When the sun slips from the day and the coolness brings relief There's no torment 'neath the stars in the stillness of the night When the swirling has to cease behind the safety of the veil In high places - darkened faces So indifferent in days to be Lost races - no losers Only winners return to see New order - can't be altered When the eyes refuse to see When the sun slips from the day [etc - repeated] Soft spoken - never could be broken Waiting the dawn light with me Slow burning - school of learning Don't hasten it down on me Hearts leaping - hopes been reaching To the heights, to the heights - these signs to see Oh baby -- in the darkness, in the darkness -- Oh Lord so good. Oh Lord so fine. In the darkness ---in the darkness--- (Plant, R. Blunt R.) Peace and Love!

I love the song "Slow Dancer!"

I also think he sounds fine on the later albums, and if you listen to Walking into Clarksdale (in my opinion the best post-Zep album), he is great on that too.
-
Hi all! In my opinion, I thought that Robert's vocal performances during the reunited LED ZEPPELIN concert on 10 December 2007 sounded far better than many of the shows LED ZEPPELIN performed during the 1977 tour.

Watched Robert on Austin City Limits last night.
TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

I find it difficult to understand what he's saying in some of his lyrics. For instance the track "Burning Down One Side" sounds like he's singing w/ marbles in his mouth. Big Led Zeppelin fan though.

Here ya go!
Slipped through the window by the back door
Caught short in transit with my love
Jumped up, fell back, cut off from romance
How could I fall without a shove?
Tiptoe like thunder on my feelings
You rock me gently with your sighs
My knees are week, my head is reeling
Consumed by fire in your eyesStepped in and shattered my defenses
Just playin' hookey with my heart
Slipped through the window by the back door
And took the keys to my poor heartYes my poor heart
Try as I might, try as I may
Well I'd try anything to make you stay
'cause I need your love, yes I need your love
Ooh I need your love, yes I need your love
I'm lookin' high, I'm lookin' low
Tryin' to find where did my baby go
Gotta find out why she ran away
I don't know where did my baby stay
Try as I might, try as I may
Well I'd try anything to make you stayJust find that Boulevard d'amour
Shoot through a neon in the night
Hot-foot through alleys, check the doorways
Try that old parking lot on 9th
There's 3-course-kissing in the same way
Oh but that don't help me none no more
I've been away too long and dreaming
Little girl ain't I seen you before?Oh little girl

Thanks for sharing that Nancy. My hearing isn't what it once was. Too much exposure to loud music over the years. Rock & Roll is a vicious game. Cheers!

You’re welcome!
Paul did a full 3-hour show in Greenville that went from 8:15 - 11:15 pm. It is almost 5 am and my ears just stopped ringing! Good Night!
