Making rock/pop songs grammatically correct
-
I'm not the most astute grammar-nerd, but I've noticed that "poetic license" has allowed for some of the most glaring, grammatical errors ever! Sounds like a good thread idea! What if we re-wrote lyrics, so that they were grammatical? Hmmmm...
-
How about Lionel Richie's "Hello"? "Hello -- is it me you're looking for?" WRONG!!!! "Me" is incorrect, as it is the direct-object, and -- of course -- one must never end a sentence with a preposition. It should be: "Hello. Is it I for whom you are looking?"
-
James Brown's "Say It Loud": "Say it loud, I'm balck and I'm proud." WRONG!!!! "Loud," which is an adjective, should be replaced with an adverb. Therefore, I have to correct the lyric with: "Say it loudly..." Of course, this creates the problem of "proud" no longer rhyming with anything. Way ahead of ya'... How about: "...and I proclaim it proudly." Any others, kids?

She loves you, Yes,yes, yes! Just isn't the same, as Paul told his dad.

Couldn't imagine Elvis singing "You aren't anything but a Hound Dog" either.

Not gonna touch that one.

I have been racking my brain trying to find some bad errors in our beloved Paulie's songs, but -- alas -- I'm coming up dry... ...for now.

Check my songs Poetic license is great

Check my songs Poetic license is great
Well... ...after a glance: "That's the world that I belong to" WRONG!!!!!!!!! It should be: "That's the world to which I belong." Also: "The day the songs will be over" WRONG!!!!!! It should be: "The day the songs will be complete"

I think I heard "that I belong to" in some song, so someone did the same mistake, so I guess I can keep it in... "to which I belong" sounds just wrong for me, it's not the same... Isn't it like "you're still the one I want to, the one that I belong to"? Shania Twain, you know I don't mean the day the songs will be finished (I'm working on that :lol... But the day "there'll be no more songs". Some think that all the great songs that can be written are already written, so the great songs "are over". Maybe some day the songs will be over, but not yet.

"To" and "over" are both prepositions, but -- informally -- most will end sentences with them. I suppose if Shakespeare ever wrote a pop song, he'd find a way to keep the song grammatical and catchy.

This one has always annoyed me: Bryan Adams' "Run To You" "She says her love for me could never die But that'd change if she ever found out about you and I" WRONG!!!! You and...I??? Grammatically, it should be "...you and me."

I'm not Shakespeare, If I was I would use more complicated words, and I like to keep it simple and straight... If Shakespeare wrote songs he would need long long melodies to make his points... If that English is good enough for a Shania Twain #1 is good enough for me.

I like Jason Mraz a lot. And "you and I" in this particular case is correct -- because it is the subject of the sentence.
