THE GLOBAL WINGS THREAD

Ok, here's the final mix of BE WHAT YOU SEE-Audi and Oliver Explanation about this weird one you know, Audi used that 30 second song from Paul and kind of made an extended, experimental "Fireman" version. He asked me to add something... I didn't know what to do till I thought of something like Beethoven's 5th start or Mozart's Requiem, something scary and loud, kind of "your fate has come". Trippy, like A day in the life or the Magical Mystery Tour EP... The lyrics of Paul's song made me think of "some people tells me, thoughts they can not defend, just want you want to be, you will be in the end" of Nights in White Satin, so I kind of put that inside... And then a suspense moment... kind of oo-o-o-o-o-n, and then I just wanted to put some screams like some Lennon strange screams or some of Paul's in Wings Over America.... I wanted to make them sound forced so I didn't do warm-up. It was planned to have lots of effects but I haven't used any particular effect, except for compressing the vocals twice cause they go from a minimum whisper to a big scream... Actually it would be funny to post the uncompressed version.
Trippy!!! Another far out track in the GW catalogue, very obscure stuff, for the collectors, very creative work!
It's kind of B-side stuff... Or should I say EP stuff... like Blue Jay Way, for instance... As for myself is the weirdest thing I've ever recorded.

Definitely the most "cock-rock" track I've ever done; that's for sure.
Cock-rock? What's Cock-Rock? the web knows it all, let's see... Well, for me Whola Lotta Love is more like cock-rock... Rock and Roll is very deep, the lyrics about going back to your passion... and also open up yourself again to love. And a tribute to old time rock and roll, with those blues chords but with a crazy heavy style in guitars and vocals... One of the best rockers ever for me.

I love how you re-worked the phrasing! Bold but well-executed! These are some Macca songs I'd like to hear your interpretations: -Little Willow -Footprints -Jenny Wren -One oOf These Days

Little Willow and Jenny Wren :
Though this was in my early days and my playing and recording really sucked! Plus I didn't have any recording equipment and, well....it just sucked. For Jenny Wren there's at least a better mp3 out there that Björn worked on but I'm going to have to dig this up from the archives. And...re-worked the phrasing? What do you mean, exactly? Lyrics? I recorded Homeward Bound in November so I have no idea anymore what I did or didn't do? But I don't think I re-worked anything? -

I wouldn't describe your guitar playing or vocals as anywhere NEAR the hemisphere of "sucking" back then -- especially since you so effortlessly played "Jenny Wren." As for phrasing: That means: which point you sing lines within a measure of a song. The best example I can think of right now is the difference between Elvis and Carl Perkins' intros to "Blue Suede Shoes."

I still have no idea what you mean....but whatever I did, I must have done it unconsciously.

Hmmm. Have you noticed sometimes when two artists cover the same song, but one artist might sing a line one way, and the other artist sings that same line another way? One singer might stretch out a word; another might sing that same word quickly and succinctly. That's "phrasing" (derivative of the word "phrase"). Sorry. I might not be the best teacher in this case. This is hard to explain.
-
OK, now start learning "Footprints." I think it would be a nice challenge for you, but I know you would do an excellent job with the chords and harmonies.
-
Ok, I got that, but can you give me an exact moment in the song of when I did it, that was obviously different from how Paul Simon sang it? That might be easier for you to explain and me to understand.

Your phrasing is excellent (and original) during this part: "Home, where my thought's escaping Home, where my music's playing Home, where my love lies waiting" You sing "home" just AFTER the first beat; Simon & Garfunkel sing "home" ON the first beat. As a result, you have beautifully re-arranged how that whole part was "phrased." I think it's terrific.

If I did change anything I didn't do it with the purpose of being "different". What I am doing is always trying to find the absolute easiest way for me to play it (since my playing really isn't that advanced, believe me, and I can't play by ear at all) so that it still sounds acceptable if I add singing. That's probably what happened here. But anyway, glad you like it, haha.

Well, keep it up. I certainly don't want you to become "conscious" of it, which might affect your raw talent!

I'm in another one of my self-nostalgic moods again. I've been listening to some old jam-sessions with my buddies a few years ago. So, here's the latest in Audi's drunken nights of rock & roll past. We were warming up before working on originals on this day, and this improvised jam is almost Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile." Ours is called, simply, "Voodoo Jam." Johno is an awesome drummer, and he's the best thing here, but I kinda' like my guitar-solo at 02:18: VOODOO JAM (2007): http://rapidshare.com/files/364697769/Audese___Dan_and_Tim___John_-_Voodoo_Jam.mp3.html -Audi: guitar/vocal -Dan: guitar -Tim: bass -Johno: drums DISCLAIMER: I have since taught them what "takin' it to the bridge" is. They weren't quite educated on James Brown lingo. -a

I think now we would we "discussing semantics" as I think you may say... I think I call that the "timing" (in Elvis and Perkins in Blue Suede Shoes), they both sing just the same melody, but Elvis sings it earlier in every beat... As timing was biggest Elvis fault (yes, he had!), maybe that was just a mistake of Elvis and became the way he did it... I don't know... I think Evie has changed the melody... the phrashing. And it's a great result, I like the new Homeward Bound. As I almost always change the phrasing and almost keep the same timing...

Yeah, I would need months for learning all the chords in Jenny Wren... I think it's great to look back and to think... "What the heck I posted?"... I mean, what then was Ok for you now it's poor for you. I guess you have become better then.

Your phrasing is excellent (and original) during this part: "Home, where my thought's escaping Home, where my music's playing Home, where my love lies waiting" You sing "home" just AFTER the first beat; Simon & Garfunkel sing "home" ON the first beat.
so the melody changes... the notes after "home" are shorter cause you end in the same beat that Paul Simon or so... Elvis used to sing just the same line and end late or soon depending on if he started soon or late... no change of the melody then. (and that means that if you ever plan to record a duet of yourself over Elvis you never know when to sing every line cause it's not on time... unless you're an Elvis fan and know when he starts singing in every line of the song) For instance, Always on my mind original, the same melody over and over...
the starts of every line 0.25 a bit late "...Maybe I" 0.31 ok 0.37 a little bit late 0.41 ok etc this shows more when Elvis sings live (live every "divo" or diva becomes more human...) btw, there was some riot in some Withney Houston show recently with people leaving and complaining... I don't know what happens to her... all I know is she should not sing now. I will always love you (live recently) -

the starts of every line ... 0.37 a little bit late ...Ollie, it's not "late." His delayed phrasing there is quite deliberate and effective. It's still "in the pocket." Great singers don't always sing "in the box." [quote="21st Century Paul"]

Whitney should refund their money. I don't judge her for using drugs, but -- if you're going to do it -- don't do the drug that's going to ruin your best instrument.
