Love this video (with the Rick)

Wow that's a great photo! I had no clue he played the 4001 after the '80s. Nice find, there. I was reading today about how Elvis Costello talked Paul into bringing back the Hofner before the "Flowers In The Dirt"/World Tour run. Maybe the real trick is to write Elvis Costello and have him suggest the Rickenbacker to Paul
hahaha, good idea the thing is, it is not as if he fully retired the Höfner totally between 1970 (Let it be) and 1987 (Flowers in the Dirt) either... it did appear twice to my knowledge in that period - (all fans here would know the 2 times seen that i will list here) in the video for 'coming up' in the start of the video for 'take it away'.. but yes, those 2 times were just more or less as 'a nod to' its actual use period. but since 1987 not even a nod to or random use/showing of the Rick has happened.. (while he would still feature his Casino electric guitar for some songs and openly state what is special about it - THE guitar itself from back then, so the Rick should be given some respect too for its part in the 1966-1969, 1970-1979 and off and on 1980-1987 usage..)

Maybe Paul will play the Rick in 2013. At this point, everything is conjecture.

The irony is the last time I recall seeing a video of Paul playing the ric is during the Flowers In the Dirt era video 'Put it There', while rehearsing 'My Brave Face' with Elvis Costello...and the last still photo I've seen with Paul and the ric was from the pic already posted earlier (from the Off The Ground CD booklet)...it has been mentioned in liner notes as being played on albums including Driving Rain and beyond

I honestly believe that Paul not walking out with the ric when he revisited 'Venus and Mars/Rockshow' only goes to show that he'll probably never use it live again

Yeah, I tend to agree. Just trying to be more positive about such things. The Hofner is roughly half the weight of the Rick. Big difference.

Yeah. He's also getting older and more fragile.

Never thought of that. If he didn't use it for that, then there's probably a good chance he won't use it. If he ever does "Silly Love Songs" again, and goes with the Hofner, then we know for good that it's gone. Maybe he broke it? lol. Who knows? You also ain't kidding about the weight. The Ric is a lot heavier. That'll have an effect over a long concert.

still hoping

There is a photo of Paul recording recently taken by Mary McCartney, he is playing the Hofner and wearing a vest. Look to the right, the Rick is on a stand, you can see the headstock from the back. It is currently on the maccareport site just above current news.

Count me in as one that wants to see the RIC again. He IS using it, but only in the studio. It's popped up in the video for "Queenie Eye" as well as various clips and photos from the sessions for "New". He just never plays it on stage. I don't buy the "it's too heavy" theory because the Les Paul he plays is slightly heavier than the RIC. I think it comes down to Paul saying he has enough instrument changes in the show and doesn't like over complication. But who knows. He broke out the Casino, never thought I'd see that happen. The RIC is way more iconic as far as the tracks it's been played on (Rubber Soul up to the late 80's)but it never had the public exposure that the Hofner had.

Anything can happen. The Rick might show up. Or not.

Sometimes I wonder if it's stipulated between by the concert promoters, obligating that Paul use his Hofner, because it is so iconic.

I was overjoyed seeing it in the "Queenie Eye" videos...haha. Good point about the Les Paul. How much heavier is it than the Ric? I've heard Paul keeps additional basses/guitars offstage at concerts that he doesnt use. Not sure how many or if thats true, but if it is, whats one more? Maybe for the extent and current level of intricacy that he plays the bass these days, the Ric suits him better in a studio than playing it live.
