Obscure Singers, Musicians Recalled

Rufus Wainwright (Kate McGarrigle's son)--(he's not that obscure in New York, though) and his sister Martha Wainwright...insider "cult" indie faves of longstanding status

Taylor Hicks, what's happened to him? Won American Idol one season. I wanted that Catherine McPhee girl to win instead of him, but I found a cd by Hicks last nite I bought off the Net, having liked him some, at the time. I know he appeared on Broadway years ago.

Audley's Piano:
I should mention that I am not in the biz, though I've done grunt work there. I've also at times lived among those in the biz, and they have a habit of borrowing anything that I come up with, and then taking credit for themselves without my consent. Back around the time of the accident with Mr. Milch, a few of the folks decided to put me in the biz by Hazing me in my family home. But I was born a cleft palate with a then severe speech impediment, and they gave no directions. Only loud disruptions of my sleep from the apartment above me. 24/7. One evening I overheard Paul Lynde comment, "There are a lot of low-lifes around here". He said it from the upstairs porch and my downstairs window was open. I believe he was visiting the Gay neighbor upstairs. And he may have said it with the intent to be heard, given the hazing that, for the most part, was being handled as "The Silence". With that technique, they say nothing and admit to nothing personally or directly. I was on the job at Warner/Reprise Creative Services as an outside temp the day that Elvis died. When the news broke, there were no gasps. No tears. There was no response at all. It was just another day on the job. They talked about how his death was expected, given the drug abuse issues. In spite of being Warner/Reprise which was not Elvis' record label, those in the industry still knew about Elvis' issues. And I don't know, but the manager of Creative Services was Mr. Benson. He was Sinatra's right-hand man. So maybe Frank told him about it. The song, "Candyman" by The Grateful Dead mentions a "Mr. Benson". Many people assume the song to be about a drug pusher. They may not be aware that the demo dept. at Creative Services (for artist promotion and demos) was managed by Mr. Benson. The song also refers to "coming from Memphis". Warner/Reprise has a Creative Services dept. in Nashville, but for Country Music releases, or did at that time. Pop, Jazz, Comedy, Folk, Soundtracks and rock were promoted through the North Hollywood location under Mr. Benson.
Audley, I'm sorry you had to go through that. And was surprised to hear about the lack of response to Elvis's death. "Borrowing anything I came up with, and then taking credit for themselves without my consent"--I can relate to that. It might have happened to me at least twice, that my online ideas were stolen--will share that later when I get more time. Both instances involved my descriptions of unusually vivid nocturnal dreams I had.
I described a crazy, funny dream I had, that I recalled in unusual detail and length--showing me at Buckingham Palace as one of a long line of candidate/aspirants for the job of Prince William's wife ! (LOL) "As if" I'd have been considered, being an American, and also older than Wills (laughs) and I'd never consciously desired to get so close to the man, although I admire him. Okay--a few years later and there's a reality show called "I Wanna Marry Harry" (!) about American girls wishing to get their hooks into Prince Harry. Supposedly the girls were so dumb they believed the fake Prince Harry in the show was the real one (chortles and snickers). I described my "I Wanna Marry Prince Wills" dream in my late lamented MSN site "PrettyinPink's Palace" or "The Pink Palace" as I would rather think of it. Somebody else gave it the Pretty in Pink name when he helped me create my site. Sometimes I wonder if that silly reality show's premise sprang from my original dream, was influenced by that. Or if that idea was already there floating around in the zeitgeist. An Elizabeth Banks (I like her) movie called "Walk of Shame" seemed modeled after a recurring nightmare-like dream of mine in which I'm lost in a big city at night and had lost my handbag and car and was running around in a panic--I had described this dream too, online. Seemed so surreal and odd to watch Banks appear to enact my dream, onscreen. I'm glad an actress I like enacted it. I used to repeatedly dream I was in an elevator and the cables broke, plunging me to my demise (but I always woke up right before it hit bottom)--then later on that was replaced by the "I'm Lost and Lost my Important Stuff" dream, which still crops up. all too often. So, Audley, I could relate to your saying some of your ideas were stolen and you never got credit and rewards in the form of wealth and personal satisfaction and glory, etc. Maybe some of my song lyrics have been stolen and certain other writings, but these are copyrighted and if I find out could be legally rectified, perhaps. Of course, one might never find out. Also they might not be good enough to get used by someone else.

Nick Drake--he is not all that obscure, though. I was re-reading a book about the late actor Heath Ledger the other night in which Ledger describes his plans to play Nick Drake in a wonderful music film he dreamed of making.

Hedge and Donna were a truly wonderful husband and wife folk rock singing duo whose music made one feel sent directly to heaven, was introduced to them by a very sensitive folk music type girl and (naturally) lost my couple of albums by them moving around--tried to find them on the Net and couldn't, will try again. I had a very nice sounding album by Carlene Carter that's gone with the wind. Ditto Lucy Simon, Carly's sister. Lucy sounded out of tune with her warbling at times, but I still loved her songs.

Where's Rita Coolidge--she had some good songs (deep album cuts, especially) and a soothing, relaxing singing style and voice, sultry and smooth I did see Crystal Gayle pop up at a Nashville party or show backstage, recently from a f.b. musical buddy who took the pic.

I wonder what happened to these--Frank Stallone, brother of Sylvester, thought he had a great voice. Sounded sort of like Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers who went solo. Harper Simon, son of Paul Simon--heard one by him I liked but haven't seen him hit the big time The Roche Sisters--folky trio of sisters, had some albums by them including "Nerds"--they always dressed nerdy they called it, in mismatched sloppy thrift shop togs, kind of grundge looking. Grundgy. (I wish that was still in style. You could thrown on any old thing and it was cool, LOL.) Evelyn Champagne King--I recall liking some of hers. Was thinking about her the other day. Mary Chapin Carpenter--she was pretty good but dropped off the radar. Can you think of any? (I guess I could google these to find out what they've been up to, LOL)
I used to go see Frank Stallone with a band called Valentine. I remember him telling the audience that his brother and he were going to be in a new movie Rocky. He still plays gigs in Hollywood and is leading the good life.

Thanks for the tip on Frank Stallone. He really does have a very good singing voice

He really does... He does a lot of Frank's songs, although he has written some really well known songs!

Where's Sean "Puff Daddy (later, Diddy) Combs? Used to be all over the media.
-
Kate Taylor, sister of James Taylor Livingston Taylor, James' brother, his singing voice sounds just like James Taylor's, called a "huge talent" by Carly Simon but one supposes he never had a big hit

You brought back lovely memories of The McGarrigle Sisters for me. Really loved the Dancer With Bruised Knees album!
How about It's A Beautiful Day? Quicksilver Messenger Service, great album -
Haven't read all this thread, so don't know if anyone has mentioned Gilbert O'Sullivan. He had a couple of hits in the early '70's (Alone Again Naturally, Claire) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_O%27Sullivan

Yikes, some feared "Claire" had pedophile undertones, do you think it did, Nancy R ? I may be naïve, but I thought not. I had considered its lyrics innocent. Thanks for those, Loves2Travel !

Wow! I guess I never listened closely enough back when the song came out, but I think you could be right. He is her uncle and he's babysitting her! http://www.lyrics.com/claire-lyrics-gilbert-osullivan.html And Gilbert's real first name is Raymond!

How about Mountain

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans
Burl Ives Yipeeiooo Yipee kayeeeh -
Perhaps I've remarked on this before--Atlanta Rythum (sic) Session amazed me by singing songs with themes I relate to so much, although they were big rock stars--"Alien" ("feeling like an alien, feeling like you don't belong") and "Imaginary Lovers" ("when they don't feel like you feel, imagination's unreal" alluding to romantic fantasies about the crush) and I think the band had others, too.
