The FUNK thread

Haha. In the future when I pass my driving test, I'd love to have a funk playlist to 'cruise' to. Any suggestions?

For starters... -Loose Booty - Sly & The Family Stone (sampled for Beastie Boys' "Shadrach") -P-Funk - Parliament -Standing On The Top - Rick James & The Temptations -13th Disciple - Fove-Thirty (a rock band from the Manchester scene in the early '90s -- but this track is funkin') -Think (About It) - Lyn Collins (more to come)

Thanks Audi, I'll have a listen to them tomorrow. I was listening to some James Brown on Spotify, but got side tracked and ended up with the cool jazz of Miles Davis, and ended up buying 'Kind of Blue'.

James Brown -- the man who influenced Michael Jackson and Prince's dancing. He does some incredible splits and microphone tricks in this video: The Payback - James Brown - Live - Zaire 1974

I wish I coulda' been at this show on that funked-out night in '78:

A documentary on George Clinton -- TV One's great series "Unsung." While I don't agree that he's an unsung artist (are you kidding???), his story is fitting for this series, as it exposes how he was duped by his longtime, shady record-company. George Clinton should be sitting on piles of money from ALL those hits he wrote and recorded, but, alas...the man screwed him. Great doc, either way:

Funk n' rock in one big ol' bundle: Parliament Funkadelic - Standing On the Verge of Gettin' It On - Houston 1976:

A must for the funk uninitiated: THE BAR-KAYS - SON OF SHAFT:

This one requires a little more headspace. It fuses The Beatles with Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic and James Brown ..,oh, and a touch of black gospel: FISHBONE - EVERYDAY SUNSHINE (live Japan 1991):

Love this song!Nice! never heard that song before but like it! Lots of little melodies going on, funky as heck. I could actually hear someone like Justin Timberlake having a hit with that song! as country/funky as it is, it has a club vibe. Good song.

This is why Marvin Gaye was soooooo extra-special. Although he is clearly super-hoarse in this '77 performance of "Inner City Blues," he and his band are funky like doo-do in this:
A favorite of mine. -
Speaking of Marvin Gaye: He was the master of harmonizing with oneself:
Mind-blowing. -
