"nieco" is a bit of a rarity, and it means 'somewhat', 'slightly'. A more popular word is "trochę" which is widely used ad. 7 Używam więcej papieru. ad. 8 Używam mniej śmietany. "korzystać" must be followed by the preposition "z" (korzystać z czegoś); and I don't know why ops: but it doesn't fit in these sentences. ad. 9 Znam kilka języków obcych. I know that you know that "y" is used to form plural forms; but not always : ops: In case of "język" (language) it is "i" "języki" (languages) Znam ----> kogo? co? język obcy (singular) / języki obce (foreign languages) BUT!!!!! ----> Znam KILKA językÓW obcyCH It seems that "kilka" (a few) forces us to use another case. Don't ask me why ops:

Pawel:
It seems that "kilka" (a few) forces us to use another case. Don't ask me why ops:
I guess this is because "kilka" is an adverb of quantity, which in many languages is used with the genitive (such as in English "plenty of", or in French "beaucoup de" - even though, on the other hand, French "quelques", which seems to be the same word as "kilka", does not take the genitive!) I guess Polish (and probably Russian) is a bit more stringent in that.

Oooo! Bilet na koncert w Lipsku kosztuje około 65 Euro. To nie jest aż tak dużo, prawda? Naprawdę nie jedziesz na koncert do Lipska albo Zurichu? Hm. Coś na weselszą nutę Kolejny zabawny błąd Ani Ostatnio Ania powiedziała: "Jestem twoją przyjacielką" This is funny because she said "przyjacielka" for a girl-friend. The right word for girl-friend is "przyjaciółka" (pshy-ja-choow-kah). She simply used a rule that some feminine nouns are formed with the suffix -ka, and she added -ka to "przyjaciel" (boy-friend) "przyjacielka" Anna is very imaginative and creative

Obviously! I guess she'll be rather successful in life with those qualities! I really hope Paul will release a live album out of all this... Not quite the same thing, but still!

Another one from Anna Today as I was picking Anna up from kindergarten she showed me a little book of hers and complained that another kid made some obscure drawings in the book; and then Anna lifted herself up and said: "Ale wolno czytać tę książeczkę" (But one is (still) allowed to read this little book.) What she meant was: "Ale można czytać tę książeczkę" (But one is (still) able to read this little book" Anna confused the words "wolno" (be allowed) and "można" (one can/is able)

Sorry, I haven't posted for a few days - I was actually busy doing some translations! Finally earning some money out of it... I hope all is getting well with your computer again!

And I'm sorry too for being slow with providing more exercises, but for one thing I didn't have my comp at home for two days; for another, I can't concentrate on anything as I'm getting ready for my Prague show this Sunday However, I have this little exercise for you to do Work out a question if the answers are (many possible versions - anything that makes sense goes 1. Bardzo dobrze, dziękuję 2. Nie, nigdy 3. Tak, poproszę 4. Niestety nie wiem 5. Czasami 6. To zależy 7. Proszę, nie! 8. Oczywiście, jak najbardziej! 9. Zastanowię się jeszcze 10. Może innym razem
-
So are we playing Polish Jeopardy now? 1. Bardzo dobrze, dziękuję Jak się powodzisz? 2. Nie, nigdy Czy palisz papierosów? 3. Tak, poproszę Chciałbyś się czegoś napić? 4. Niestety nie wiem Proszę, która godzina? 5. Czasami Czy lubisz oglądać piłka nożna? 6. To zależy Co to twoja ulubiona potrawa? 7. Proszę, nie! Czy mogę otwierać okno? 8. Oczywiście, jak najbardziej! Czy znowu zapomniał jego zadania? 9. Zastanowię się jeszcze Dokąd idziesz na urlopie? 10. Może innym razem Graliśmy w piłkę nożna?

So are we playing Polish Jeopardy now? 1. Bardzo dobrze, dziękuję Jak się powodzisz? JAK CI SIĘ POWODZI? 2. Nie, nigdy Czy palisz papierosów? (CZY) PALISZ PAPIEROSY? 3. Tak, poproszę Chciałbyś się czegoś napić? 4. Niestety nie wiem Proszę, która godzina? PRZEPRASZAM, KTÓRA GODZINA? 5. Czasami Czy lubisz oglądać piłka nożna? PIŁKĘ NOŻNĄ 6. To zależy Co to twoja ulubiona potrawa? sorry, but it's meaningless "To zależy" = "It depends" 7. Proszę, nie! Czy mogę otwierać okno? OTWORZYĆ 8. Oczywiście, jak najbardziej! Czy znowu zapomniał jego zadania? sorry, but it's meaningless "Oczywiście, jak najbardziej" = "Sure, you're most welcome OR with great pleasure" 9. Zastanowię się jeszcze Dokąd idziesz na urlopie? DOKĄD JEDZIESZ NA URLOP "idziesz" = "you walk" 10. Może innym razem Graliśmy w piłkę nożna? ZAGRAMY W PIŁKĘ (NOŻNĄ)? "graliśmy" = "we played"
not bad though

ad 6. Yes, I did understand "To zależy" = "It depends". So I asked "Co to twoja ulubiona potrawa?", meaning "Which is your favourite dish?" (not sure if the grammar is correct), to which I can imagine a reply "it depends" (on what your mood is, what you'd like to eat right now etc.). Does this sound completely absurd to you?
-
OK Christoph I can't question your line of reasoning Of course you're right; you may like a dish if it's been prepared by your grannie, but not necessarily if at a bar, for example "Co to twoja ulubiona potrawa" "Czy to (jest) twoja ulubiona potrawa"

The last exercise inspired me to make a few comments on Polish question words: "czy" is this little word put in front of a closed question - an answer can be either "tak" or "nie". Polish students of English think that the English "czy" is "if" and they abuse "if" to ask questions in English: "If you like me?" - "Czy lubisz mnie?", etc ops: "co" = "what"; but the problem is that the English "what" is sometimes translated into Polish as "jaki/jaka/jakie/jacy... etc". I think in German you have "was" and "wie" which again brings our two languages together a bit What do you like to eat? CO lubisz jeść? What do you mean? CO masz na myśli? What did she say? CO ona powiedziała? What is it? CO to jest? What do you want? CO / CZEGO chcesz? What is your favourite music? Jaka jest twoja ulubiona muzyka? What's your telephone number? Jaki jest twój numer telefonu? What job are you thinking about? O jakiej pracy myślisz?
