Perhaps I should buy a better dictionary with more usage notes in it, especially as far as contemporary or old-fashioned usage is concerned. Most common dictionaries just provide you with approximate word translations (some idioms at best), many of which may have been accurate when the lexical data were acquired, but have gone out of usage since then, or the usage of a particular word may have changed - but the dictionary doesn't tell you so! (Such as the word "ziomek", which my dictionary translates as "compatriot", but you told me it has a very different and special usage in modern Polish!) Right now, I am, unfortunately, a bit short of money... Anyway, I must make a note of "żadnych / jakichkolwiek wyścigów" then! Might be nice to hear a few songs in Polish! Unfortunately, I have no knowledge whatsoever about Polish music, be it in the 60s or whenever!

Ziomek is no longer to be found in contemporary Polish. It's been replaced by "rodak" (singular) and "rodacy" (plural) Ziomek only refers to the German group of people who were driven away from Germany's former eastern territory after 1945, and now claim rights to their former property. If you like The Beatles you'll also like Czerwone Gitary

I actually understood it to mean all German expatriates from the former Eastern Territory, rather than just those who claim rights. Speaking of that, is there also a general term for those people of German origin who chose to stay on and adopt Polish citizenship - now forming a cultural and linguistic minority within Poland? I don't know how many of them there are these days, but they must be a few thousand at least.

Were they modelled after the Beatles?

Yes, they too have a special name. But it's almost midnight and I can hardly think properly right now. Please excuse me I'll try and come up with this word tomorrow. (being born in Słubice (former Frankfurt/Oder) I should know this, right? ) The Czerwone Gitary story is long and winding (to be continued ......)

a controversial opinion till today I remember that discussion on www.thebeatles.art.pl For instance even I like Czerwone Gitary But I think that is a big difference beetwen The Beatles and Czerwone Gitary

Oglądałem ich strona internetu, www.czerwonegitary.pl , i słuchałem niektórych śpiewów w fajły mp3. Muszę zgadzać się z wami obydwa: Brzmią bardzo dobry, ale nie jak Beatles!

DOKŁADNIE!!!!! Żeby nie było zaznaczam - ja też lubię Czerwone Gitary, ale to jednak nie to samo co Beatlesi PS. Co to są "w fajły"???
-
"W fajły mp3" was supposed to mean "in mp3 files". That's what the Poltran translator gave me. It looked good, so I went with it! My dictionary doesn't give the word "file" at all! (In general, it doesn't have much of modern computer vocabulary! Perhaps you two could give me some relevant words there! )
-
"fajł" is a non-existant Polish word : It looks similar to "fajtłapa" though, which is Polish for "jackass" English "files" are translated in Polish as "pliki" an MP3 file = plik MP3 [plik em-pe-t-shy]
śpiewów
zapewne chodziło Ci o "piosenek"? piosenka - a song "śpiew" ~ singing "uczyć się śpiewu w szkole muzycznej" "śpiew" nie ma liczby mnogiej...

That online translator seems to make up words sometimes! I got more things right when I relied only on my dictionary and made up all the sentences myself! But then I found this thing and now I sometimes use it for longer sentences, because it often took me so long to make them up that I got logged out before I could post my message! (Of course I check what it's doing before I post it... but many things still escape me!)

-
A gdzie jest nasz Paweł?
-
Przepraszam za te dni absencji ops: Byłem chory, poza tym mam doła* * dół - colloquial for feeling low and off-colour Christoph, to słowo to "autochtoni" Magda, w Polsce nikt poza nami ze Stronki nie traktuje Paula poważnie

Byłeś chory, Paweł? Mam nadzieję, że teraz jest lepiej...

Tak Parę dni temu humor poprawił mi kolega przywożąc mi z Londynu książkę/album Wingspan! Jestem pod wielkim wrażeniem Myślę, że zacznę o tym wątek w Not Such a Bad Boy A Ty? Masz tę książkę?
-
Nie, mam album, ale nie książkę!
-
A ja mam książkę, płytę (czyli album), i dvd

Po prostu nie mam dość pieniędzy o tej porze (ostatnio?). Ludzie po prostu nie płacą swoich rachunków A ja myślałem, że Niemcy to taki porządny i solidny naród!?
-
Ale nie, jeśli powinieną płacić pieniądze! Oprócz tego, to był klient z Austrii! Ale dziś pieniądze przyjechali!
