Now, now, let's not begrudge him playing Mull of Kintyre in Toronto. I have waited ages to hear it live and had to fly up to Canada to hear it, loved every minute of it. It would have been nice if he had played Glasgow last September when we were there but now I have no complaints. It was so Scottish, especially since on one side of me was a couple that hailed from there originally--the wife from Edinburgh, the guy from Aberdeen. He had even seen the Beatles in Dundee in 1963. One difference-I notice on the Hampden videos on Youtube, the Scottish flag remains fixed on the background screen behind the stage. In Toronto, the Saltire morphed into a close-up shots of the Pipe Band before ending with the Canadian flag on the screen. All very, very moving and effective. Scotland Forever!

I understand the Scottish connection with Canada, but why did he sing Mull in London last December?
-
THAT is as much a mystery to me as you, I guess. You could make a stronger case for him singing it in Charlotte, North Carolina as London. I saw his late July concert there and the area is loaded with people of Scottish descent, like me. Scads of bagpipe bands around. Course, the song never really dented the charts much here in the States, so he just doesn't think about doing it here. Guess it was a British megahit as well as huge in Scotland, so he puts it in the London set list.
-
because it was a monster xmas hit in the uk. as his gig was close to xmas he thought it was appropriate. it could have been 'scarborough' or 'carlisle city'...anywhere in the uk would have done!!
-
Good answer, I had forgotten about the seasonality of it, even though I remember seeing the video for it on American TV before Christmas of 1977. That song just never got any traction here, which is really a shame.
-
At least he never wore his Scotland blue shirt anymore at any other gig

8 weeks ago today and I was sat in Block AA7 soaking up the sun, waiting for the show to begin. It was our first time in Glasgow and we a brilliant weekend. The weather was perfect, the locals hospitable and friendly and Sir Paul once again brightened up my life with three great hours of memories, while creating a few news ones to look back on. Cheers Macca, you've earned your knighthood several times over for services to music.

1 week of holidays and when I'm back this thread is on Page 3 Just to remind you that it was only 7 weeks ago. Have you noticed that the set list of the 1st Toronto's gig is exactly the same as the Hampden's one (with Mull of Kyntire) ?
Yes, and I thought it was something special to have MULL OF KINTYRE in the set list. Such an illusion!
It doesn't bother me....the fact I got to see Mull of Kintyre live in Scotland, and being hugely patriotic of my country, was an experience that will never leave me.
-
All of you got to see Mull performed in the most special place of all to see it, short of Paul actually performing it down by the lighthouse at the tip of the Mull and that won't happen for any of us! I am glad I got see him in Toronto but Glasgow would have been better.

Wasn't the weather awesome? It was actually bloody hot (almost too hot) during the soundcheck in the afternoon. Thank god we were allowed to bring our drinks inside. I'm glad I still have the pics to look back at. And the gig on CD to listen to.

I know!!! I arrived Fri before the gig, left Mon after the gig, 4 brilliant sunny days!!! 4 days of shorts and a tee, perfect! That's gonna be different when I go back in Dec

It is a rainy August in North of France. Fortunately, I had at least 2 sunny week-ends in the UK in June I cannot yet believe how lucky I am to have been there. It appears that it was the best of his 5 UK gigs. And even perhaps the best of the Up and Coming tour. I hope this thread will last a long time (we still have much work to get 182 pages as Nashville's thread )

Yeh that would be prefect...maybe he could play Wonderful Christmastime like london last year. Sure am...there is the usual big shops like HMV (a few through the city but the big one is on Princes St) and there are your smaller ones like Ripping Records and other Vinyl shops. Good thing is most of them are in the town centre and the good thing about Edinburgh is that pretty much everything is in walking distance. I don't know if you have seen them or not but The Bootleg Beatles are playing Edinburgh on the 16 Dec....Ive been to the last 4 ones and they are really good.

The weather was fantastic This was only my second time in Scotland, never mind Glasgow and the weather has been great both times. Don't want to tempt fate but i've yet to attend an outdoor gig where it's been raining! : Long may it continue!

I guess we can say 'in our dreams', doubt that it's going to happen. WANT it to happen but don't think it will I do hope he will do more gigs in Europe later this year though.

I don't think they actually filmed Hampden. There was this camera guy at the front and the 2 or 3 at the back but when they film for a DVD there's usually at least 1 or 2 guys walking around with a camera on their shoulder. And I didn't see these guys at Hampden... They were there during some US gigs though so IF they're gonna release a DVD, it will be from an US gig (again). I think Brian recently mentioned in an interview that he wasn't aware of gigs being filmed for DVD though.
