After seeing the movie, two things stand out for me... first of all, Paul's cameo was great, his makeup and costuming were really well done, he definitely looked like a member of the Sparrow family For a pirate I thought his teeth looked pretty good, even though they blackened them up a bit for the part. From his lines it sort of sounded like he had been executed several times, so knew the best executioners for the job, so maybe he was immortal in some way, like Captain Jack. Second, I noticed in the end credits that "Maggie Mae" was performed in the film, with credit given to all four Beatles names. Didn't notice what part of the film the song appeared in... maybe it was played by the string quartet when Barbarossa first appears? Interesting that Maggie Mae was in the film because we were just discussing that song in The Paul McCartney Picture Thread a few days ago Orlando Bloom was sort of the Luke Skywalker of the film appearing at only the beginning and the end, to bring the story together... was surprised to see Keira Knightley as well, in what was a very small (but important) appearance.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT I really loved this and think Paul did wonderfully! I was really surprised because from the bits I'd heard before I thought he might appear during the credits or as an easter egg. I wasn't expecting him to appear when he did, but it was a very pleasant and fun surprise! The spoilers that he "performs a song" are very cute now in hindsight. I wonder if they chose it as a song that's closely associated with the Beatles, but not an original they would need to get expensive rights for? I was hoping he'd have a chance to show off his voice talents, but I wasn't disappointed. It wound up being so funny watching him basically play himself in that getup -- and I think I caught a little dip into pirate-y voice territory for a second, so I was happy. It was a riot how his character is very much him -- cheerful and optimistic despite hard circumstances, and telling corny jokes and stories! It actually went on longer than I thought it would while it was happening, but once it was over I felt like it flew by. I didn't get a chance to fully enjoy 3D IMAX Paul, so I might have to go see it again!

Ah, you didn't notice? That was the critical part! He sang a line from it while the camera was on Jack coming down the hall. I gasped when I heard that and knew he was coming up. I thought it was really well done because you might not catch him visually until he starts talking, but when you hear that singing and that song it's unmistakable!

And forgot to say that Maggie Mae does seem appropriate as something a scoundrel would be singing to himself in prison.

Thanks, I heard him singing but totally missed that it was Maggie Mae! It was the perfect song for him to sing in the movie

I was disappointed when he was credited as Jail Guard 2 but when I was at the preview screening he was Captain Jack's uncle which means one thing... HE'S KEITH RICHARDS' BROTHER

I'm thinking they might have originally intended for him to be a guard in the prison with the same jokes and advice, rather than a prisoner himself. Reading the Star-Ledger review from the other thread that pans the cameo because Paul doesn't seem like a rogue, I wonder if doing so might have been a better fit character-wise -- but then you would lose the cute Paul as Keith's "brother" aspect.

definitely not cut from the same cloth

That makes sense. Maybe they gave him the jailer role at first, but he did so well they expanded it and gave him more on screen time.

Some articles about and reviews of the cameo: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/pirates-of-the-caribbean-directors-talk-mccartney-cameo-w484617 http://ew.com/movies/2017/05/26/paul-mccartney-pirates-of-the-caribbean-5-role/ From both of the above:

"One of the best moments of the whole shoot was at the end of the shooting day with him," R?nning recalls. "The scene starts with him singing a song, and at the very end of the day, we needed to do a wild take to just record him singing. Nobody else is working on the set so on the soundstage, it's completely quiet, and we're only rolling sound. So I'm sitting there behind the monitors, listening in with earphones and basically recording Paul McCartney. That was a big, big moment."

Review (somewhat negative, but not Paul's fault): http://screenrant.com/pirates-caribbean-5-paul-mccartney-cameo-character-explained/
