TOUR REHEARSALS: QUESTIONS

I don't know any details, but all band members stated in various interviews throughout the years that they rehearse a lot of new material without McCartney, who joins in during a later stage, after which he decides what he wants to do and what he doesn't want to. Many of the songs added since 2010 are songs he earlier declined, going by past interviews. I will try to dig them up.
I'd appreciate that: thanks. I know Rusty and Brian have coerced (or hectored) him into playing many songs over the years we'd not otherwise have heard live. I'd love some detail, always found the process, however it plays out, quite interesting.
Here's a bit about rehearsing: Brian Ray, November 2005: "Oh yeah, before every tour Paul will sort of get a general idea in his own mind of what he feels like doing, he'll shoot off a list of songs for us, and it's a ruff list and songs will be added later and songs will be taken out but usually we'll get a list of 45 songs, to be wittled down to a mere 37. [..] And what usually happens, the band will get together for four days before he gets to rehearsal just to get our feet wet and get oriented on the new material. Do some vocal work so the backgrounds are pretty set so he can just drop into a fairly nice sound when he gets in four days later." (http://www.macca-central.com/news/2019/Exclusive-Interview%3A-Brian-Ray---Nov.26%2C-2005-%28audio%2C-transcript%29/?nomenu=y)) And here's a lot about setlist choices, keep the year in mind: Brian Ray, November 2005: "We did "The Night Before", the band, now this is just band preparing then playing for Paul, "The Night Before", "Backseat of My Car", "Waterfalls", ah, there's a few others that I probably won't mention because they could make the next tour and I don't want to tip my hat. [..] There is an element of surprise that Paul really appreciates. But those are a few that over the time we've tried, oh "Junk" we had a real cool time playing "Junk", that was for the '04 Tour actually we rehearsed that one. "Paperback Writer", you know there's been a number of them and a long time agon in 2002 we did Lovely Rita." "Oh I forgot to tell you we rehearsed "Come and Get It". [..] We had a great time playing that too." (http://www.macca-central.com/news/2019/Exclusive-Interview%3A-Brian-Ray---Nov.26%2C-2005-%28audio%2C-transcript%29/?nomenu=y)) Brian Ray, August 2010: "One song I don't think we play well?I will say we've tried Lovely Rita a few times, and Paul has never added it to the set. I just don't think he's comfortable with it for whatever reason. We didn't suck at it; I just don't think he feels it the way he wants to." (http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/paul-mccartney-bassist-brian-ray-exclusive-interview-267729)) Brian Ray, May 2011: "I?d love to play Backseat of my Car, Juniors Farm and maybe Take It Away." (https://joshgill.wordpress.com/2011/05/31/an-interview-with-brian-ray/)) Rusty Anderson, March 2011: "Are there any Beatles/Wings/Paul songs that you haven?t played yet that you want to?" - "Oh yeah. Backseat of my Car (we?ve actually played it at rehearsal and same with Junior?s Farm), the Night Before, Lovely Rita, Hi Hi Hi, etc." (https://joshgill.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/an-interview-with-rusty-anderson/)) All Rusty's suggestions but 'The Back Seat' were added later! There's another, now with a dead link, interview in audio by WAXQ-FM, in which Brian Ray says that 'The Back Seat Of My Car' and 'Junior's Farm' were scrapped during rehearsals because McCartney wasn't comfortable with ... the lyrics. Can I have... a little more? And there are more suggestions, mainly solo, by the band in the tour books.
"Brian Ray, May 2011: "I?d love to play Backseat of my Car, Juniors Farm and maybe Take It Away." Please please do "Take It Away" - lol !!

Steve:
Gee, if he has to do a Lennon song.... After watching Dave Grohl and Jeff Lynne a few years ago at the Grammies shred the song, I would love to see "Hey Bulldog" just to hear him and Rusty/Abe sing it over the bass lines....
OMG, me too! That is one of my favorite Beatles song!

I'd like to see "In My Life" come in as a replacement for the Lennon tribute...and a little homage to George Martin in the middle too!

If he's going to do a tribute to George Martin I think he should do Wanderlust as it's one of George Martins favourites

He didn't play yet these Beatles' songs: Hold Me Tight What You're Doing Tell me what you see When I'm Sixty-Four Martha My Dear Rocky Raccoon Why Don't We Do It In The Road Honey Pie Maxwell's Silver Hammer Oh! Darling
I suspect most of them will never be played..."What You're Doing" and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" are the only two I could see making it in at some point.
Of these, the song I'd most like to hear would be "Why Don't We Do It In The Road". It's one of my favourite Beatles songs! I have nothing against "What You're Doing", but Paul doesn't think much of it, if what he said in "Many Years From Now" is anything to go by: "'What You're Doing' was a bit of a filler. I think it was a little more mine than John's, but I don't have a very clear recollection so to be on the safe side I'd put it as 50-50. It doesn't sound like an idea that I remember John offering, so it sounds like a way to get a song started, some of them are just that. 'Hey, what'cha doing?' You sometimes start a song and hope the best bit will arrive by the time you get to the chorus...but sometimes that's all you get, and I suspect this was one of them. Maybe it's a better recording than it is a song, some of them are. Sometimes a good recording would enhance the song."

Back seat of my car would be my favorite any song not yet performed live is a close second revival of: She came in through the bathroom window Venus and Mars Let me roll it Junior´s Farm would also be nice

Some ideas that could work for show; Opener: Would guess EDAW out, maybe Venus and Mars or I wanna hold your hand Jet for 2nd song instead of Save us LTWTMS appears to have been dropped- so Good Day Sunshine or One after 909 Can't buy me Love should stay in set Paperback Writer has to go- Take it away/Silly Love Songs/Letting Go could slot in easily Let me Roll it/Long and Winding rd/My Valentine will prob stay Let em in possibly replacing Maybe im amazed-hasn't been done in a while Acoustic section: plenty to choose from- I'll follow the sun/Here there & everywhere/Two of us/Things we said today/Michelle/Hope of Deliverance George/John Tributes- about time they were changed around- why not try In my Life/My guitar Gently weeps Lovely Rita/Mr Kite/All together now will prob be changed- why not bring in Penny Lane/Fixing a Hole/Ticket to Ride Live and Let Die/Let it be/Hey Jude I except will be last 3 songs in main set. Encore: Happy if Another Girl sticks around, again plenty of options- Please Please me/She loves you/Birthday. If Pauls feeling brave Uncle Albert/No more lonely nights. Helter Skelter has been there too long imo- Hi Hi Hi could move to 2nd encore Golden Slumbers to finish. Prob won't be like this at all!

Eh? Let Me Roll It??? He's been playing it at every show on every tour for more than a decade!

Longer.

Let Me Roll It needs to DIE from the setlist! Venus & Mars was done in 2010 & it was the best opening I've seen him do, so I would love it if he did it again with Rockshow being a bit longer including 'The lights go down bit' & the 'Green metal suit' bit included as well. My two favourite bits from the song

Err...more than a decade = longer

I meant that it's been on every tour since '93.

A Paul McCartney concert should feature songs written by McCartney or mostly by McCartney. Not complicated. In My Life is mainly a John song. Enough of that already. It's not like he doesn't have enough McCartney penned tunes. Never or rarely played: Back Seat Of My Car Dear Boy Too Many People Junk Tomorrow Dear Friend Little Lamb Dragonfly Helen Wheels Picasso's Last Words Every Night Letting Go Call Me Back Again Love In Song Beware My Love Silly Love Songs Let 'Em In London Town With A Little Luck Café On The Left Bank Girls School Mull Of Kintyre Goodnight Tonight Getting Closer Spin It On On The Way Take It Away No More Lonely Nights Not Such A Bad Boy My Brave Face This One Get Out Of My Way Hope Of Deliverance Flaming Pie Young Boy Fine Line Only Mama Knows Ever Present Past New His Beatle past: For No One Here There and Everywhere Michelle Martha My Dear You Won't See Me She's Leaving Home Things We Said Today Getting Better Good Day Sunshine Wait

Certainly there are rehearsals that are off the public radar, right?
-
He should definitely play something from 'Press to Play', maybe 'Only Love Remains'?
-
That voice is long gone, I'm afraid. McCartney his his vocal peak in the '80s.

Well, when I think about it, maybe 'Only Live Reamins' can be difficult for him, but I think he can handle some other songs from that album, 'However Absurd' or 'Stranglehold' for example
-
I also like 'Write Away' but it's not really a live kind of song live
