John Lennon under the influence of anything still beats Kanye. In the days we live in where people are famous for Muzak and amateur porn movies, John was a real musician. John accomplished more by the time he was 24 years old than Kanye will ever accomplish. "I'm not comparing myself to John Lennon but..." KW
Yeah, you're right, He wasn't comparing himself to John. Kanye is a real musician. He's a talented musician. He's also been a gamechanger not only to hip hop but pop music in general. You only need to do a little reading a Wikipedia to know this. He's a douche, but that's not the same as being talentless. John had his douchey moments too, but you don't write him off as talentless for it. Honestly, this tendency to write Kanye off without knowing anything about his actual musical career is extremely disturbing. I think Bruce M was right when he noted that people react with more venom when Paul works with Black artists. Which is ironic since the Beatles were open and enthusiastic about the influence Black musicians had on their music. And you can see a throughline through music like Kanye's and song like "Appreciate" on Paul's NEW. And I know people will freak out at the thought that race might be affecting their perceptions, but after 44 pages of this, this thread is enough to make someone lose faith in humanity. parlance
-
Race has nothing to do with Kanye's behavior at the Grammys or my opinion of his music. Saying people don't like someone because of their skin color is not valid for me. I don't play that game. If Kanye went by the merits of his musical ability and had some respect for others maybe people would take his musical genius more seriously. I hope he learns some kindness from Paul.
-
I don't understand why people can't like or dislike any music. And why does someone always have to approve of it or not. Let's just give peace a chance.

I wish it weren't valid, but this thread including posts like yours prove the point, whether you want to acknowledge it or not. I've never heard anyone say, "If only John had been less douchey, people would take his musical genius more seriously." Yet there's a double standard. It's also insulting to Paul because it assumes that his fans know better than he about the caliber of musical artists he should be collaborating with. parlance

You're missing the point. People can like whatever they want. It's the level of disgust that people are constantly and consistently expressing about this collaboration that's disturbing. That goes for this thread and others I've seen like it on other boards and on FB. I've been trying to ignore it, and I thought it would have died down by now. But it's hard to ignore when people take the most random opportunities to insult Kanye's music when it's often clear they haven't bothered to listen to it. It's telling that this level of freakout is almost nonexistent with regards to the Lady Gaga collaboration. parlance

I've said it before & I'll say it again...His reputation precedes him. Anyone that pulls stunts like he does is sure to ruffle a few feathers. And I'm sure that he knows that. There are more songs to come with this collab...this thread will be soooo long. LOL. The GaGa thing is for an animated movie. And I do believe there was a thread about GaGa sitting on John's piano with Yoko's approval of course. She even sang onstage with Yoko...but that is neither here nor there.

But what does that have to do with determining his musical talent? And I'll say it again - you won't find people dismissing John on that same basis. As an aside, it seems that Kanye went off the rails only after his mother died. This is a narrative that will be familiar to any Beatle fan.

The GaGa thing has not even been released...thus no "freakout" as you put it. With Kanye's reputation of being a jerk...some may have no urge to check out his music. I don't care for rap & that's that. I like this song with Rihanna. It's catchy. The Kanye only song, I myself don't care for it. I don't understand any of this.

I think the point that parlance is trying to make about Lady Gaga is that no one is worrying about a Paul collaboration with her. Notice that many folks immediately expressed their displeasure about Paul collaborating with Kanye because he's a rap/hip-hop artist. There hasn't been any displeasure expressed about a potential Lady Gaga collaboration.

The freakout with Kanye started before any singles were released. The mere idea was causing people to declare that Paul was making an egregious mistake.

That's fine, as I already said. This isn't about people expressing a mere dislike for hip hop. My response is to the outright revulsion that's being expressed pretty much everywhere the topic's come up, including here. It's the level of hatred that's become inappropriate. parlance

And this is why John Lennon should not be attacked in death. If Kanye had not mentioned him you would not be disrespecting John's memory like you are doing. I don't think Paul would appreciate your remarks about John. I have already asked this board to stop people attacking John Lennon's memory. And on race relations, I have done more to help stop injustice to minorities being elderly injustice, gender injustice, racial injustice in this country that you will ever know. So on the race note you are wrong. If you don't believe it why don't you look to my previous posts and see what I music I love. I grew up listening to all artists. Some being Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Billie Holiday, Howlin' Wolf, it goes on and on. Don't preach about racial injustice on the Internet. DO something about it. I lost a lot of my privilege in life fighting against injustice in Alabama. When you give away comforts in life to fight against injustice let me know. And Dr. Dre is still the man. Kanye will never be Dr. Dre. Lol! Power To The People! RIP John Lennon!

Again...it is his reputation as a person. (not to mention his wife) And I mentioned GaGa on John's piano because I think there was a lot of complaining at the time. Parlance...The race card has not been played much on this board (that I have seen) but now yes...you are most definitely bringing it to the forefront...congrats.

How is she disparaging John? It's pretty well documented that John had a bit of an abrasive side. It's not like she's exaggerating or bending the truth. It's a fact.
-
I know all about John's "abrasive side." I know John did heroin. John, in death, should have some respect is all I am saying. John cannot defend himself. I should not have to come on here and defend his memory. But I do because he deserves it.

I'll say it again - bringing up his reputation carries a double standard, and has nothing to do with his music. I wouldn't bring up any of this if people didn't write him off as "talentless," which is laughable at best. And did you miss the part where I basically said - twice now - this doesn't apply to you? Unless it does.
oobu24:

A reminder - I wasn't the first to notice it possibly playing a part in the discussion. Race isn't something you play. It's something that already exists that needs to be acknowledged. parlance

4 5 seconds is a great song huh?
-
What is the topic again? I thought it was, "Let's all call Kanye a talentless douche," because that's what 75% of people's posts have been so far, not about the song. I think it's undeniable there's a racist element out there. That photo that probably everyone has seen, that shows a mug-shot-like picture of Kanye, calling him Kim Kardashian's ass? It looks designed to make him look like a scary black man, a criminal, and people act like he threatened physical harm to Taylor Swift and Beck. He's just a blowhard, and they're over it. Paul has not said a single negative word about him or expressed even a note of unease about being seen with him. He's dealt with difficult people throughout his career. This is nothing.

West portrays himself that way. That is the brand he is selling. Don't make it sound like he puts forth a positive image and every racist out there is making him out to look like a criminal. HE does that. On purpose.

He doesn't portray himself as a criminal, he portrays himself as some kind of master of the universe. There's a difference.
