Only One- new song by Kanye West, featuring Paul

Kanye is almost 38 years old. He's been around for a while. If Paul were collaborating with Justin Bieber or Carly Rae Jepsen ("Call Me Maybe"), that would be embarrassing, because they have virtually no resume; heck, it would be embarrassing for even Kanye to work with them. People keep referring to Kanye as if he were just some novelty act or something. I can understand not personally liking him, but in no way is it embarrassing musically for Paul to work with him. I'm not sure what's still to come, but this one song doesn't sound "hip or youthful" to me when, except for the Autotuning, it sounds like something from the '70s.
I never said Kanye was a novelty act or embarrassing musically. In fact, I was criticizing McCartney, not Kanye. I just think Paul doesn't have to prove anything and when he collaborates with someone known for rap or something youthful, it actually makes HIM look bad. Having said that, he is Paul McCartney and he can do whatever he wants. But it is ok not to like it.

BTW, I actually like this new song!

Fair points, but I think it only makes Paul look bad to older people, who are not the ones consuming most of the new music these days anyway. Tomorrow we will find out if the song sold enough in the second half of last week to reach the Top 10 in Billboard, and the full Hot 100 comes out Thursday. Re: Paul collaborating with Prince, I think that would actually be more awkward, and partially because it seems Prince never collaborates with anyone outside his inner circle.

If people can forgive John Lennon for his many public transgressions because they value him as an artist, then I see no explanation other than racism for why people can't forgive Kanye his public transgressions given that he is a critically acclaimed artist (whether or not you personally like rap, and whatever Billy Joel thinks of it).
It's not just racism. It's also the fact that John never lived in the internet age where gossip and rumors travel faster than ever. Most of the people saying bad things about Kanye or Miley or Britney or Taylor have probably never heard any of their songs.
Excellent point. I think people are too quick to use racism as the reason for people not liking/forgiving an artist like Kanye. BTW - How forgiving is everyone of the mistakes Justin Bieber has made in public. I remember Lennon being blasted by the press for many things when he married Yoko and for abandoning Julian. Seems some people forget that he was no "hero" in the press and was "forgiven" by the press and the public only after he was tragically murdered.
Thank you. Just because I don't enjoy a certain performer and their work doesn't mean I'm racist towards them it just simply means I'm not a fan of their work or the way they behave. There are plenty of performers out there I'm not a fan of.

That's cool. Still, I have yet to see any proof that young people really care the McCartney is involved.

It really does feel like a double standard is being applied in some cases. Many, many famous and talented entertainers have been equally famous for being jerks, from Kanye to the late Lauren Bacall. I may not want to hang out with them (not that any of them would have me!), but if being a jerk were a crune, a health percentage of the population would be in jail. Kanye is talented, albeit talented in a style that mostly doesn't appeal to me. I'd much rather Paul work with talented and interesting if imperfect people (and seriously, John could be at least as much of a jerk as Kanye has been) than just do more of the same-old same-old. For the record, I like the new Kanye/Paul track one hell of a lot more than "Hope for the Future."
Spot on. Me too.

By the way, it is "Kanye" (pronounced KON-yay), not "Kayne." (I'm seeing that a lot.) Sounds like a lot of people are slamming this track simply because it's by an artist who mostly does rap. Please note that the song is not rap, not in any way. It is much more of a throwback to '70s soul. It deserves to be evaluated on those terms. Others say they're bothered by Kanye's personality, not the fact that he's black or a rapper, but if that's so, I'd like to hear which other black artist or rap artist they would rather hear Paul collaborate with. I sure wish we could see what a Twitter feed or web comments would have looked like in 1982-83, to see what people were thinking when Paul recorded with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. I'm guessing it would have been really ugly.
"Others say they're bothered by Kanye's personality, not the fact that he's black or a rapper, but if that's so, I'd like to hear which other black artist or rap artist they would rather hear Paul collaborate with" Ok, I will give it a shot. How about McCartney get "funky" and do some jazz with George Benson. "I sure wish we could see what a Twitter feed or web comments would have looked like in 1982-83, to see what people were thinking when Paul recorded with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. I'm guessing it would have been really ugly" Stevie Wonder has been loved for many years so even if they had twitter back then I am quite sure McCartney fans would have been happy he teamed up with another legend. As for Michael Jackson, it would have been no problem at that time because none of those child molestation accusations came out at that time. Both of these performers were a lot more respected by the masses than Kanye is now IMO.
Oh, I heard blatant racism about those duets at the time, and many McCartney fans were up in arms about those songs (and still are), at least for the reason that they were such lightweight pop. "Ebony and Ivory" regularly turns up on people's "worst songs of all time" lists. (I like it.) The "masses" of young people respect Kanye for his music. It's undeniable. He's had a long string of hit albums and a successful career as a producer and heaps of critical acclaim. People lined up to work with Frank Sinatra despite his dubious associations. Jack Nicholson is well-known as a royal pain on set, but he's universally respected for his acting and got tons of movie roles despite his behavior. Seriously, I'm not calling you a racist, by the way, but I thought you might come up with someone more contemporary than George Benson! Is John Legend too radical?
John Legend would be fine also - lol. George Benson came to mind because I was listening to him the other night and love his guitar playing. Another post mention Prince, that would be cool also. Now that I think of it, how about Lenny Kravitz.
John Legend is very talented. But he's too much of a pussycat. I think Paul was in the mood to collaborate with a boss.

That's hard to say. But I would guess that they care about this more than the fact that he did music for a video game.

I've been saying for years that "Momma Miss America" was ripe for a hot hip-hop track.

Momma Miss America has already made its appearance on hip hop tracks. It's drum break has been sampled by the Beastie Boys, Common, The Roots, and others.

Kanye has had SIX No. 1 albums in a row -- out of the 7 albums he's released since 2004. And his last 3 or 4 albums have received massive acclaim from the critics. He's been praised as an artist by people as varied as Bruce Springsteen and Lou Reed. It's bizarre that anyone would think Paul is embarrassing himself or "lowering" himself to work with Kanye.

Comments by... exactly that audience who is clueless. Paul McCartney is selling out stadiums based on his output up to 50+ years ago. Kanye West is being regarded as one of the most important artists of 2015, for his upcoming output. Paul McCartney is creatively very relevant though, what for me counts just as much, and his collaboration with one of his creative peers Kanye West is another way in which he expresses that in 2015. Here's something more, by Myf Warhurst of The Guardian:
Kanye West and Paul McCartney: haters will hate but anything that opens minds to new material works for me That some people don?t know Macca is a kick in the guts to those who still insist the popular music of yore is still the most important in the world [..] It?s not surprising this collaboration has inspired a wave of negative comments at the bottom of news articles. In my 20-plus years working in music print and radio I?ve never stopped hearing self-described music lovers saying they don?t like ?that rap crap?. Even though this particular song is a ballad, West will always be associated with hip-hop, hence the instant vitriol. [..] [..] But before we slam the others, stop to consider that a familiarity with Sir Paul?s oeuvre depends on where, when and with whom you?ve grown up. That some people don?t know Macca any more is a kick in the guts to people who still insist the popular music of yore is still the most important music in the world. [..]
