What a great track. I bought it immediately and am looking forward to hearing the rest of their collaboration. The only downside: all the ridiculous, melodramatic moaning I've read on various Beatles/McCartney/music forums and on news story comments about how Paul has "lowered himself" to work with Kanye. The amount of sheer racism underlying many of the comments criticizing Kanye and/or rap music is dismaying tho I suppose not surprising. But to hear it from Beatles fans just disappoints me. No one is required to like Kanye, his personality, his music, or rap, but to deny his talent is just plain ridiculous.
Yes, absolutely.
I would speculate that half the folks at a McCartney show would call themselves "conservative." Lennon must be spinning in his grave.
And those same "conservatives" were for the most part "hippies" when the Beatles were popular in the 60's.

Very true. Or is that h e l l a true? Hopefully this could help with Paul's next project. My recommendation is a McCartney/Dylan album of new material.
IMO - it is not racism that I am disappointed Mr. McCartney is working with Kayne, it is because Kayne is a jerk.
Lots of people would argue that John Lennon was a jerk. Abandoning his oldest son. Slapping a female reporter in the face when she asked him a question he didn't like. Setting up his wife for accusations of adultery (after years in which he'd cheated on her relentlessly). Disrupting a live Smothers Bros show to such an extent he was thrown out of the theater. Shall I go on? I could. At length. If people can forgive John Lennon for his many public transgressions because they value him as an artist, then I see no explanation other than racism for why people can't forgive Kanye his public transgressions given that he is a critically acclaimed artist (whether or not you personally like rap, and whatever Billy Joel thinks of it).

I've certainly given my share of anti-Kanye comments over the years, but -- truth be told -- Kanye West will always be a hero in my eyes for what he did at that Hurricane Katrina telethon.

Nobody said Mr. Lennon was a choir boy and was not a jerk quite often. Quite a few people were not forgiving Mr. Lennon for his actions, myself included. This all changed when he was murdered and literally became a "saint" in the public eye. As for Mr. West, I think many people think he is a jerk because he also married somebody many people loathe and think is nothing but a two bit wh***. Once again, nothing to do with race. I will end with many people "hated" Yoko and thought Mr. Lennon was a fool/jerk to marry her.

According to several Beatles books I've read, it is true. Apparently the female reporter had heard rumors that John was sleeping with a lot of groupies (because, duh) and asked him about being unfaithful to his wife and he slapped the reporter in the face, even though he was in fact unfaithful to Cynthia L (because, duh). Imagine if Kanye slapped a female reporter in the face for asking a rude question. The Beatles were darn lucky to be famous in a time without the internet and camera phones. I'm not trying to debate who is a "better" person or "better" artist. My point is that the argument that we should hate Kanye because he is "a jerk" just doesn't hold much water, IMO, given what a jerk Lennon could be (and the other Beatles on occasion too). Just because someone reveres the Beatles music and hates Kanye's music, that means we should forgive one's jerk behavior and not the other?

It really does feel like a double standard is being applied in some cases. Many, many famous and talented entertainers have been equally famous for being jerks, from Kanye to the late Lauren Bacall. I may not want to hang out with them (not that any of them would have me!), but if being a jerk were a crune, a health percentage of the population would be in jail. Kanye is talented, albeit talented in a style that mostly doesn't appeal to me. I'd much rather Paul work with talented and interesting if imperfect people (and seriously, John could be at least as much of a jerk as Kanye has been) than just do more of the same-old same-old. For the record, I like the new Kanye/Paul track one hell of a lot more than "Hope for the Future."

This is the first Kanye West song I've ever heard. Because of Paul, a lot of people can probably say the same thing. Likewise, this might be the first Paul McCartney song a lot of Kanye West fans have ever heard. If it introduces different music to people, that's not such a bad thing. Multiply that by millions because of the people involved and it's even better.
I agree but the problem IMO is that is is a very ordinary at best song.
I disagree. People that are listening to these 2 specific artists are not that likely to crossover.
You never know. How many people here are now fans of other artists because of The Beatles/Paul? How many people came to The Beatles/Paul through other artists?

It's not just racism. It's also the fact that John never lived in the internet age where gossip and rumors travel faster than ever. Most of the people saying bad things about Kanye or Miley or Britney or Taylor have probably never heard any of their songs.

I agree for the most part but will add a difference. Lennon may have been a jerk but he was boyhood friends with McCartney and they were friends and song writing partners for years. This is different than teaming up with somebody who you barely know who at times has been crude and mean. Like I said earlier, I will leave it up to others to determine how talented Kayne is because I don't like rap and this record was the first time I heard him. I can tell you I was not really impressed but it is only one song so that is not a fair judgement on any artist. Personally, I would rather hear McCartney do a very mediocre song (Hope Of The Future) by himself than team up with someone to do a song that is just as mediocre. At least in "Hope For The Future", you can actually hear McCartney sing. Finally, I have to shake my head at people who are excited about McCartney making the charts with this song. Really, the only reason it will hit the charts is because of Kayne's popularity with the youth of this country and not because McCartney is featured on the record. In other words, it looks like a old man is riding the "coattails" of a young artist. IMO - I would have been much happier if a song from "New" would have hit the charts but what does this "old' man know - lol.

Myself and others do not "hate" Kanye even though we believe he is a jerk. My point was that of all the people McCartney could pick to work with I personally would have like somebody else less controversial and with a different musical style. That is just my personal opinion and it is not a knock on Kanye's talent. I have said a few times already, I don't like rap so I would not be a good judge of his talent. Kanye has received critical acclaim from many others so he must have something to offer. As for the song they released, I am not impressed and it is very mediocre at best IMO.

By the way, it is "Kanye" (pronounced KON-yay), not "Kayne." (I'm seeing that a lot.) Sounds like a lot of people are slamming this track simply because it's by an artist who mostly does rap. Please note that the song is not rap, not in any way. It is much more of a throwback to '70s soul. It deserves to be evaluated on those terms. Others say they're bothered by Kanye's personality, not the fact that he's black or a rapper, but if that's so, I'd like to hear which other black artist or rap artist they would rather hear Paul collaborate with. I sure wish we could see what a Twitter feed or web comments would have looked like in 1982-83, to see what people were thinking when Paul recorded with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. I'm guessing it would have been really ugly.

"Others say they're bothered by Kanye's personality, not the fact that he's black or a rapper, but if that's so, I'd like to hear which other black artist or rap artist they would rather hear Paul collaborate with" Ok, I will give it a shot. How about McCartney get "funky" and do some jazz with George Benson. "I sure wish we could see what a Twitter feed or web comments would have looked like in 1982-83, to see what people were thinking when Paul recorded with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. I'm guessing it would have been really ugly" Stevie Wonder has been loved for many years so even if they had twitter back then I am quite sure McCartney fans would have been happy he teamed up with another legend. As for Michael Jackson, it would have been no problem at that time because none of those child molestation accusations came out at that time. Both of these performers were a lot more respected by the masses than Kanye is now IMO.

Excellent point. I think people are too quick to use racism as the reason for people not liking/forgiving an artist like Kanye. BTW - How forgiving is everyone of the mistakes Justin Bieber has made in public. I remember Lennon being blasted by the press for many things when he married Yoko and for abandoning Julian. Seems some people forget that he was no "hero" in the press and was "forgiven" by the press and the public only after he was tragically murdered.

Oh, I heard blatant racism about those duets at the time, and many McCartney fans were up in arms about those songs (and still are), at least for the reason that they were such lightweight pop. "Ebony and Ivory" regularly turns up on people's "worst songs of all time" lists. (I like it.) The "masses" of young people respect Kanye for his music. It's undeniable. He's had a long string of hit albums and a successful career as a producer and heaps of critical acclaim. People lined up to work with Frank Sinatra despite his dubious associations. Jack Nicholson is well-known as a royal pain on set, but he's universally respected for his acting and got tons of movie roles despite his behavior. Seriously, I'm not calling you a racist, by the way, but I thought you might come up with someone more contemporary than George Benson! Is John Legend too radical?

Why does it have to be someone contemporary? McCartney isn't. My problem with this is it smacks of Paul trying to be hip and youthful. He is 72. He should collaborate with Prince. Or Bowie. Or Neil Finn.
-
Kanye is almost 38 years old. He's been around for a while. If Paul were collaborating with Justin Bieber or Carly Rae Jepsen ("Call Me Maybe"), that would be embarrassing, because they have virtually no resume; heck, it would be embarrassing for even Kanye to work with them. People keep referring to Kanye as if he were just some novelty act or something. I can understand not personally liking him, but in no way is it embarrassing musically for Paul to work with him. I'm not sure what's still to come, but this one song doesn't sound "hip or youthful" to me when, except for the Autotuning, it sounds like something from the '70s.

John Legend would be fine also - lol. George Benson came to mind because I was listening to him the other night and love his guitar playing. Another post mention Prince, that would be cool also. Now that I think of it, how about Lenny Kravitz.
