WINGS FUN CLUB - recollections?
-
I remember Geoff rubbishing the British audiences! I remember that write-up very well. I believe he did that in several articles which sort of bothered me. I've seen Paul live in the States many times and have also seen him in Britain once and Germany twice. I thought the European audiences were just as enthusiastic as American audiences. I've occasionally been in American audiences where they were total and complete duds. Not in the most recent '05 tour, but in the tours prior to that.
-
I wondered where the tone about British audiences came from, I never knew it came from, or was supported by, someone on his own team . Anyway back to the subject of the Fun Club ...... that subject about UK crowds could take this thread off-track big time! Everybody here seems to have had a close relationship with the club - many writing and receiving responses from various staff members. Does anybody have any actual numbers of members involved was it the hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands? Did you have unique membership numbers that could give us a clue? Martin

Sadly, I was never a member. but have gotten Club Sandwich Magazines on ebay, I like them alot and they are part of my Beatles/Paul/Etc collections
-
I've still got all my membership cards, will have to find the membership number
-
Looks like I joined in 1983 and my number was 12/8233
-
I wonder whether the "12" represented the month because the first membership card says Dec 83. So maybe if I joined in dec 82 that's where the "82" part came from? I'd give anything to still be getting them magazines..

I joined the fun club in early 1974 and my membership number was 2546. And thats how it stayed until the early 1980's when it suddenly changed to 11/80125, much to my consternation. Its possible that the 11/80 does denote November 1980 and that the 125 meant that I was the 125th longest serving member at that point. As mentioned in a previous post,I quickly managed to secure from an ex-member all the various newsletters from (1973) the previous year. The earliest written communication from the club that I have is a typed A4 sheet of paper, date stamped 12 FEB 1973, and headed simply WINGS with an address PO BOX 3, WIRRAL, Cheshire L60 8QH. The letter is signed by Lucy and reads: Dear (name withheld) Thank you for writing to me about the Wings Fun Club. Unfortunately the announcement was a little premature but I am keeping your name on file and as soon as appications are ready I will send you your form. Wings are delighted by your interestin the group and hope that you will enjoy their new single "Hi Hi Hi" and " C Moon". Meanwhile I am returning your subscription and will be in touch with you again as soon as possible. yours Lucy. The very first newsletter was headed Paul McCartney And Wings Fan Club with a London address. Made up of printed two A4 sheets stapled together, the content is mainly about the ATV tv special concert and the forthcoming Red Rose Speedway lp,which dates this first edition as late March/early April 1973. The newsletter reveals the following about the artwork for RRS which I think is quite nice. The back cover pic may puzzle you,- it was taken at the Paris Olympia gig, during the interval somebody took the flowers and white soft toy on the stage and left them under Paul's mike for when he returned. This newsletter was put together by Claire.

It's great that you have kept these early communications about the Fun Club I've still got all the cards that Sue sent and all the letters and merchandise sheets that were sent out too. I treasure everything to do with Club Sandwich and the Fun Club

Fiona M:
I treasure everything to do with Club Sandwich and the Fun Club
yeah, same here. However useful the internet is,you can't beat being able to hold a genuine 34 year old Wings Fun Club newsletter, now held together with rusty staples.
-
You are absolutely right, Kestrel. I still like the paper as opposed to messages here that you can no longer get to.
-
I think I'm going to start trying to collect the old issues, pre 1982
-
I'm moving this weekend and I found a box marked Club Sandwich. I need to do an inventory so I don't go looking for ones I already have.
-
I've been through mine this morning and I have numbers 24 - 86. I guess the older ones will be harder to find This was the word search which I had printed: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/mccartney/wingsboard2.jpg

Anyone remember the Listen To What The Fans Said sections in the Club Sandwich. I've been re-reading through them again. I wondered if anyone here ever had any of their messages posted in that section

Sorting through my Wings Fun Club material I came across this letter which was sent out to folk showing interest in the club in 1973. Dear Friends This club is for you, whether you are interested in Wings music wise, fun wise or otherwise, my aim is to cater for your interest, and to keep Wings and you, their fans, in contact with each other, so you are all up to date on Wings activities. For your 50p membership fee you will receive a membership card and newsletter every four to six weeks. Services of the club will be: offers of pictures, T-shirts, badges, pens, posters and possibly other novelties. Queries on the group will be answered if at all possible - please remember to send a S.A.E. Sale, swop and wanted ads, of anything to do with Paul / Wings and pen pal lists will be printed free of charge in the newsletter. And club competitions will be held. Your opinions will always be welcome, and interesting letters will be published in the newsletter. If you do wish to join the club please complete the application form attached. Smile away Claire (taken over from Lucy). ------------------------------------------------------------ Wow,you sure got a lot of goodies for your 50p. You couldn't get half a cup of Starbucks coffee for that money nowadays. And staying on the subject of value for money, this is from just two years later: WINGS TO TOUR GREAT BRITAIN We are pleased to announce that Wings are to make their long awaited tour of Great bRitain, starting on 9th September, 1975. As it has been two years since Fun Club members have had the opportunity off seeing the band 'live', we wish to help members as much as possible to enable those who want to attend the concerts to do so. Tickets will be sold at the box office at each city, ranging in price from £1.00 to £2.50, and you should apply there for the tickets you want. We are also holding a small number of seats priced at £2.00 for any members who are unable to obtain a ticket from the box offices. As we will undoubtedly receive more requests for tickets than we can meet, tickets will be allocated by a draw. You must be a fully paid up member of the Wings Fun Club to enter our ticket draw, so if you are due to renew your membership, please do so now! ............................................................................. £1, £2, £2.50p tickets? Those were the days.

That's great that you've got those early letters! My communications only go back to around 82/83. And as you say the membership and ticket prices were unbelievable!! I agree, those were indeed the days

I thought there'd be more people on here who were in the fun club?
