Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has purchased the double LP vinyl versions of POP or TOW. I'm curious about the track listing on the second LP, and the overall sound quality. Thanks!

Hi Shawn. I was tempted but unfortunately the ToW vinyl was snapped up before I got to the shop and I didn't want to buy one without the other. So I opted for the deluxe sets as a one-off treat - they're they only two deluxe releases I intend buying. I'm curious as to whether the ToW vinyl is the remix? According to various forums there's no actual remaster of the original mix - it's just the Japanese Black Face Cd from the mid-80s. Hope you're well.

Hi Squid, Thanks. I hope you're well, too. I haven't purchased these in any format yet. Trying to decide what to do. I bought the deluxe boxes for Ram, Venus and Mars, Speed of Sound, WOA, and McCartney II. For these releases I'm thinking that the very next versions may suffice. I really just want the music, including the bonus tracks. It's difficult to justify the expense for the books and disappointingly scant DVDs.

If the DVD content was more thorougoing and complete I would likely take the plunge. And I do really like some of the deluxe sets. Ram is my favourite. But I'm starting to feel like it's a lot of money to lay out for CD's. At least with the vinyl versions, I know that I'll be utilizing and enjoying them for years to come. My Vinyl POP is completely worn out. I bought it in '83. It was my first Macca album. And oddly enough, I've never owned TOW on vinyl. I bought it on cassette in '83, and later purchased it on CD. So, in this case I think the vinyl versions may be a nice choice for me. But I would like to get the bonus tracks, so I am looking to confirm the track listing for these reissues.

But for the record, I've always had Ill Give You A Ring, on my 12" Take It Away single. Now that is a lost gem. Hilarious. "Take you to the picture, miss the second feature...." hahaha!!!!! What a vocal! Definitely one of my favourites. McCartney gold. 😎

I understand why you don't want the deluxe sets for these, to be honest - I bought them because they have a certain sentimental value for me, but I agree the extras are pretty thin. There's not a great deal of info in the various books, though the photographs are nice. I agree the DVD material is scanty as hell. Yep, I love I'll Give You a Ring; I even love Ode to a Koala Bear. I'm sure the new releases are mastered okay and most probably sound good. There's a separate mastering process for vinyl anyway, isn't there, distinct from CD. The problem I have is quality control on modern vinyl - these things seem to pick up pops and clicks and scratches much easier than vinyl in its heyday, and while I don't mind a bit of surface noise, which is part of the experience after all, I draw the line at rapid deterioration. My other problem is that the LPs have that vertical spine strip reading Archive Project - it's okay on a CD cover, but I think it's silly to put it on the vinyl sleeves, especially when you have a wrap-around picture, as with Pipes of Peace. On the other hand, the absolute novelty of having these once single albums as double albums can't be understated. I did handle the Pipes of Peace reissue when I called into the store and it had quite a heft to it - it felt substantial, something the original release never did, despite its gatefold. So, I dunno, ha.

I like Ode to a Koala Bear, too. I'm not crazy about that white strip, either. If it weren't for the bonus tracks, I would probably just search out used copies in good condition. A real shame about the skimpy DVD's. A lost opportunity. Oh well. On the positive side, I like how these reissues encourage people to critically reconsider some of Paul's lesser-known records. I have enjoyed revisiting POP, in particular. Side one really is terrific.
