Worst McCartney album?

McCartney C+ Ram B
Well you lost me at the Ram grade. You've low-balled him. It's clearly an A. And even cranky Pitchfork agrees with me. Yesterday I was reading a Pitchfork review of Eddie Vedder's new solo album and almost fell off my chair when I came to this sentence:
The album's best moments-- "Sleeping By Myself", "Without You", "Longing to Belong"-- tap the same quietly wounded melancholy as Paul McCartney's 1971 proto-indie pop masterpiece Ram.
That's how I view Ram. But to each his/her own.

Ram is a masterpiece! A definate A+++++ Its flawless from start to finish in my opinion. It also shows Paul's vocal range in all its glory and probably around his vocal peak.

Hi, Everybody! I really like/love the 'Ram' album, too, but the 'Band on the Run' album is the one that made Paul a 'solo' legend. 'Ram' has a lot of fine tracks on it and a great 'sound', but the tunes are a bit 'lightweight' [dare I say it?] and a few of them. like 'Long Haired Lady' are flawed. I'm not a big fan of '3 Legs' either, though a lot of other folks enjoy it. The 'Band on the Run' songs are more 'solid' [IMHO, again] and two of them (or three in the US) became major hits. Anyway, I did state that those who really loved a specific album should feel free to kick the grade up a notch or two. Plus, a solid 'B'--minimum, is a GOOD/FINE grade. Finally, in it's day [1971] it wasn't that well thought of [see 'The Beatles: An Illustrated Record' by Roy Carr and Tony(?) Tyler [book] for a late '70's/ early '80's review (give or take-- depending on the edition). As long as they're all 'in print'--I'm cool with it! Best Wishes, Pat. P.S. To Macsback: Big Smile. I understand. I have a lot of fun with 'Wild Life', too, although I don't feel it's one of Paul's best. 'Bye.

Well opinions about a record can change. The conventional wisdom about Ram when it was released turned out to be dead wrong. It doesn't really matter what people thought then. What matters is whether an album has legs, whether people are still listening to it now. People have been rediscovering Ram for about five years now and I see more and more people saying that Ram, not BOTR, is Paul's "masterpiece," as it was described in that recent Pitchfork article. Is it lightweight? I don't think so. It's actually a pretty angry, melancholy album at times, yet also manages to feel joyous and airy at other times. Just my two cents, though.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that RAM has 3 Legs.

I'll just take Paul's advice here and smile away.

I mean tracks like Letting go and If you wanna are enjoyable songs but there's no real inspiration in them. A lot of his albums I've marked C would be B's if they had one or two more inspired gems on them. That's been the problem with most of them. Ive ranked these albums through personal taste more than if they are technically sound albums. But hey ho, this would be the rankings i would give using abcd.

I'm giving A's to the following: McCartney Ram (oh heck: A+++++) Band on the Run McCartney II Chaos and Creation Electric Arguments Before I get slammed for giving McCartney II an A, let me say: I don't evaluate each of those albums in the same way because they're very different musically. Just like The Beatles are very different from an electronic band like Kraftwerk but you would still give A's to both band's records. So I don't go into McCartney II expecting serious lyrics (like I do when I listen to Chaos) because that's not what electronic music is about; it's about simple, often repetitive lyrics and playing with the sounds of words. I judge an album for what I think it is, not for how it compares to something it isn't trying to be. The rest of his albums are B's and C's.
