Wix Wickens!!!

No matter how good they sound using keyboard, it still wont sound as good as the real instruments
-
I'm a purist too, I understand that position completely And I definitely believe in hiring musicians and not replacing them with machines. but in terms of staging the show for a traveling tour that sounds like it could get expensive and pretty crowded onstage They'd need to reconfigure perhaps. plus you have to provide habitation for ppl on tour and support for the instruments so you have to hire yet more ppl. For just one or 2 songs? doesn't seem cost effective for a tour. Wix accomplishes a lot efficiently and he also plays other instruments besides keyboards, he does guitar and accordion That gives me the idea that I would love to see Paul and the My Band perform with a full orchestra. Wow!! In a small venue like an orchestra hall. Heaven! makes me wonder if Wix assisted Paul on Ecce Cor Meum. Anyone know?
-
[quote="WixRocks!"]I think those two sounded great with Wix on tour, very realistic They sound better than they did on the 89/90 tour! God, whatever keyboards he used on that tour must have been pretty low tech....and linda's synth on band on the run is just pitiful...[/quote I agree - as I said before, the piccalo trumpet section of Penny Lane is the only time I notice an obvious artificial sound...otherwise, it's all good

ah dont get me started on that bloody accordian...I was raging when it was used during Mull in Halifax. It ruined the song. It was unnesesary. The cost shouldnt factor into it, if he wants to cut costs in his shows then there are much better ways than being cheap on the actual music. I've seen loads of other bands that I have used real muscians and it adds so much more (hey maybe even if he had used real instruments the price of tickets might be a bit more justifiable) there are loads of artists who take a band on tour with them that play stings or brass and that just adds to the experience so much more

All my trials is a great song until wix comes in....cheap , cheap , cheap ( chirpie) I have paid a tenner to see bands and they have the real thing with them. I thought Macca ( and Weller ) sounded great with Jools Holland

A good idea you have opened a thread for Wix. Sure if you realise how important a keyboardist is for a band. Wix began touring with Paul in 1989. As of then, he has appeared on many of Paul's DVD's & albums and has become the manager for many of Paul's tours. Not only Wix & Paul Mc. pulled very good together. Also Wix & Linda did. Still perceptible to the burning lava lamp to see during the concert in memory of Linda as an idea of Wix. In fact Wix surname is Paul too. But as two Paul's is very confusing, Paul Mc. started to call him Wix or Wixie. I have met Wix several times. He's very kind, humble, and because of his wife related to the Dutchies. Wix was also instrumental in making the 'Bandaged' album the success it was, in aid of BBC Children in Need. He recorded on albums by David Gilmour, Paul Carrack, Boy George, Tim Finn, Jim Diamond and the group Six. He was the co-producer of the first Savage Progress album. Keyboardist and programmer for Edie Brickell & New Bohemians album 'Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars. There he met Chris Whitten. Wix has also recorded a version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. He was also a good friend of the writer Doulglas Adams. He has composed the music for radio productions of Adams's 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. In Wix 2001 performed at his memorial service. Beside Paul Mc. he associated also at acts of Bob Dylan, Elton John, Bon Jovi & Joni Mitchell

what is the point of playing an accordian during Mull,,,in fairness I didnt actually notice until I watched it on youtube afterwards but it just made it sound yucky. I was glad he did mull because at least there were real badpipes, the only reason the accordian was used was so not to make Wix look redundent during the song which is ridiculous. It took something away from the song

I mainly listen to mod & soul music these days.....and i agree the keyboard is a central part of this genre of music..........as long as they keep to playing the keyboard and not doing cheap sounding copies of brass and string sections. Can you imagine all the motown classics without REAL musicians ? it would not be the same. Asi type i am listening to these
Osaka Monaurail Great keyboards AND brass- the bamboos Wix may be a talented bloke , but you cant beat the real thing. -

Kinda weird this thread degenerated so quickly from one of support of Wix to one so critical and debating of Wix's utility in the band or second guessing whatever is played in performance. : Personally nothing grates on my nerves like a string section that "rocks" as they play. oh god! have some class you nerds ! So nobody knows or cares to answer about Ecce Cor Meum? ok!
-
I dont care what anyone says you cant beat the sound ( and sight ) of a real brass section. Wings over America is probably my fav macca live lp......good setlist and a brass section. REAL music
1min 21 secs That just sounds like someone on a keyboard trying to sound like brass....poxy. : -
Maybe this would have been better with John Shuttleworth on the keyboard doing the strings and brass
I read other threads slagging off artists like madonna and britney useing tapes live yet its ok PRETENDING to have brass and strings. looks cheap, sounds cheap....is cheap. -
OK! Lets aim this thread back at the postives of Wix and away from who likes a keyboard vs. a trumpet! I would like to thank roos for the lovely mini- info paragraphs of wix They were great
-
I didn't think the intent of the thread was to criticize Wix. The decisions about what he plays on tour and the $ spent are Paul's, not Wix's.
-
Exactly!
-
Even if there was a brass or string section Wix would still be doing the parts too. Paul's only a musical genius, it's not like he has any idea what he is doing You really want to add an hour to sound check to deal with all those extra people? : Paul wants him there, he won't tour without him The band as it is, is a guitar based band. It's as close to the Beatles as Paul can get it, and Wix represents Wings and his connection to Linda and fulfills the classical and orchestral elements. He also plays bitchin guitar when he has a mind to. Wix Rocks! (sorry Wix Rocks, I mean Wix Rocks, not you. but you do too I am sure) O.O ops:
-
See! This is a good positive wixy post, and the meaning of this thread! I totally agree about the connection with Linda, I like how he keeps the lava lamps up there I also agree that Wix is a great guitar player! On this past tour I only noticed him playing on helter skelter, did anyone else pick up on any others? So yes, Wix most certainly Rocks!!!
-
I've never said he shouldnt be there, I like the guy and think he has a very valid role within the band on keyboards and various other things, just not on strings or brass
-
Wix is by far the most talented musician up there on stage during a mccartney concert!
