Wix Wickens!!!

This is the thread for wix!!! Brian and Rusty get their own threads, so now we've got one for ole wixy! Wix is such an extremely talented and definetely deserves this thread. Please post your comments on here (preferablky about Wix ) Let's keep this thread alive! (P.S. if someone wants to make a thread for Abe, I think its only fair )

Absolutely agree - the guy is brilliant. I've often read complaints about how Paul McCartney should have a live brass section...but this guy covers the bases just fine (although I wish Paul would just bring a piccilo(sp) trumpet player for Penny Lane)...
-
I've read many of them as well. I think Wix does a fine job! And quite honestly on most songs it sounds like real classical instruments! It probably wouldn't hurt to bring a real trumpet player for Penny Lane, cause wix is already doing the flute parts and the rest of the brass, so it could lighten the load for him a bit

Wix is an incredibly talented musician and also one nice guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting him three times since 1990 and he is cool. The band was staying at our hotel in Liverpool in 1990, so they had no choice but to interact with our tour group. Next meeting was at the Concert for George and he played along and acted like he remembered us. Next was at the premier of Ecce Cor Meum and he was posing for pictures with fans. I like that he keeps the red lava lamp in Linda's memory.
-
When I think of Wix I think about when I proposed in Detroit, and Wix was talking right after that and said something about "Maybe the Reverend McCartney can do the honors!" But the part I remember most was at the end of the show when the band did their final bows, then ran infront of Melissa and me and bowed for us, Wix blew us a kiss and put his hands over his heart and said what looked like "Best of luck, love you kids" or something along those lines. For that moment when Paul and the band did that for Melissa and me, we will always love those guys!

That's great you've made a thread for Wix . I've met him a few times , and he's a lovely guy .

Great stories! Especially the proposal one, thats so heart touching I can't believe how many times you guys have met Wix! Lucky I haven't me thim yet! I will one day! And then it will be my new avatar I also love how he has his lava lamps in honor of Linda

I like when he plays the accordion! those things squeeze back you know :
-
Me too I've never seen an accordion at another concert ever! And I probably never will It adds a whole new atmosphere to songs like calico skies And pulls out the french feel even more on michelle
-
he's a great musician and a nice bloke met him in 89 at twickenham film studio's where paul was filming a tv interview for japanise tv to promote Flowers in The Dirt
-
cool! he had more hair then but still not very much His hats were cool
-
I remember Paul saying in a documentary around the time Off The Ground that Wix was, basically, the touring band's "M.D. (Musical Director)." Much would be missing without what he brings to the table.

I wonder what he actually does then... anyone have any ideas what he brings to the table for the concerts? aside from the amazing playing! haha josh

I believe he actually is the musical director. On Ringo's 2003 tour, mark riviera was the musical director and he tuned up all the instruments before hand So maybe he does that? I don't know though...Paul carries like 7 of those hofner's with him I've always wondered what he's doing on those laptops up there, I think that may be part of his musical director job. Or maybe he's on here checkin out the new wix thread!!!
-
I had tickets on the side of the stage in Portland in November, 2005. Paul's hofners are tuned by John Hammel (he was right in front of us).
-
oh, is he the guy they interview on the space within us dvd next to the big rack of hofner basses

A musical director might generate charts for new songs for the band to learn and/or work on arrangements, instrumentation...but this band is pretty tight and savvy and knows the repertoire. Wix's parts are the most diverse and so I reckon he just has to worry about himself most of the time when they introduce new songs to the list. On tour I believe there are other guys, techs (used to be roadies haha) who are solely responsible for handling the valuable guitars like Paul's Hofner and Brian's Gretsch... Abe must have his own drum tech too and Wix a tech to handle his keyboards and guitars and other instruments. On a related note I think adding a live brass section would really detract from this being a guitar-based band I wouldn't be interested in seeing a bunch of other ppl up there particularly. Maybe for a special occasion--in that case seems like Wix as Musical Director would be the man who gave the players their charts for the tunes. For someone so low key Wix is a very integral part of Paul's success!

I couldn't agree more, Jena!

Ah this comments helped in what I wanted to say about Wix. I like him and he is talented no doubt...but hes kind of holding back from allowing new songs and real instruments. If I'm going to have to hear Got to get you into my life and Eleanor Rigby again I'd love it that whole lot more if Wix wasnt playing on it, songs like that need real music

I think those two sounded great with Wix on tour, very realistic They sound better than they did on the 89/90 tour! God, whatever keyboards he used on that tour must have been pretty low tech....and linda's synth on band on the run is just pitiful...
