Paul's New Album-- "New"-- CONFIRMED

OK, Bruce, now it's a single! http://www.paulmccartney.com/news-blogs/news/27635-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs-2-gets-new-music-from-paul This could indeed have a huge impact on sales of the song. I still think there'll be another single, though. Surely Paul won't hinge his big comeback entirely on an animated movie?
It always was a single. Saying the word didn't actually change anything. No doubt there will be a second single, but not till after this one has run its course. His performance at the iHeartRadio Festival may give us a clue, since when Paul tours to promote an album he pretty much always includes the followup single in his sets.

In this case, yes, it's a single. I was just saying (in the other thread) that "single" is an amorphous concept, and has been for decades. The Hot 100 used to be just vinyl 45 sales plus radio airplay, then along came cassette singles and CD singles, but ultimately they didn't sell enough to keep the Hot 100 pumped with enough data to reflect what songs were really popular (partly because labels started holding back on producing physical singles so they could boost CD album sales), so Billboard began to allow songs that were ONLY played on the radio as well. Then along came digital downloads, primarily through iTunes, and as those sales ballooned, Billboard allowed ANY individual track to hit the Hot 100 if it was downloaded enough. This has resulted in multiple tracks from the same album hitting the chart on the week of the album's release, most notably with artists like Taylor Swift and the "Glee" cast. Does that make all these songs "singles," even if they're not promoted as such? Who knows? (I would argue no, obviously). And then, more recently, Billboard started counting streaming data (like Pandora and Spotify), and now YouTube views (which allows a viral video that just happens to have music to send that song to #1, as with "Harlem Shake"). Plus, iTunes has an inconsistent policy of what it calls singles. I've got over 1200 downloads from them, and lots of them list the "album" data as the song title followed by "- Single"?even if that same song is on the current album by the artist (this includes pop artists, as well as rock, hip-hop, Latin, all genres). It's just a way to promote the song separately. Other songs that get played on Top 40 endlessly and sell tons of downloads are ONLY listed on iTunes as album tracks, even though it's obvious that they are singles. When "New" first came out, it was listed only as an album track on iTunes, was not selling that much, was not getting much airplay, and was not called a single by McCartney's people (now it is). All of this is why I say the term "single" can mean whatever we want it to mean.
