Memory Almost Full has aged very well

Well, I have listened to the first 9 songs on the deluxe version and so far I am underwhelmed (and I haven't even listened to Nod Your Head which I know I HATE!) Sorry, MAF fans, give me Flaming Pie (or almost any other solo Paul album) any day!
MAF is one of my favorites but I can relate in a way to your feelings about it. I have complete apathy towards Chaos and no matter how many times I try to listen to it with fresh ears, it falls flat. There are one or two songs on Chaos that are OK to my ears but I guess I prefer my Paul to rock a bit more in between the slower songs.

Ever Present Past is okay. I know the video. Never really loved Dance Tonight, sorry. I guess I like Only Mama Knows the best. Don't really like Mr. Bellamy and can't remember See Your Sunshine. Loathed Gratitude. Sorry, will never have anything but dislike (to put it mildly) for Nod Your Head. This album is just not my cup of (English) tea! Will listen to the rest tomorrow "On My Way To Work."
____________________________________________________ I caught your "on the way to work" pun. Your talking to a real Macca nut here. And yes, I like the New album a lot too. Skip Gratitude because it spoils the album for me. But the 5 songs after that are terrific: Vintage Clothes Grade 10 That Was Me Grade 10 Feet in the Clouds Grade 9(uses Beach Boy harmonies at the end; you have to get used to the "very, very's" House of Wax Grade 10 The End of the End Grade 10 The 3 bonus tracks after Nod Your Head are all good but Why So Blue (the middle song) is a terrific song in my opinion. I'm just a little surprise that you don't like Ever Present Past more. I'm singing it as i am typing this. I love that one. Mr. Bellamy is a bit quirky but I like it a lot too. It has that bouncy Paul melody. I actually like a couple of the live "Dance Tonight" videos a little better than the studio version. I know it is a simple Paul pop song that he wrote for one of his grandchildren but I still like it. On the live versions, he add the "little Girl" part plus he adds some nice "oh, oh's" ad libs to the melody. I don't know...I like the wacky, letting his hair down Paul. That is why to me it was the perfect opposite of Chaos. They are both very good to my ears. By the way, after tomorrow I have company coming to my house. I will probable not be on this site very much over the next week. Some people will probably be thinking...Thank God.

Sorry my fellow Mac fans, but I absolutely LOVE Nod Your Head. It had that "Wings" vibe which I LOVE. My teenager daughter at the time LOVED Nod Your Head, and her dance team did a fun video to it which resembled the video. It was a BLAST. And my teenager son Metallic fanatic thought Nod Your Head was the best song on MAF. I was NEVER a fan of The End of the End, which sounded pretentious; and the whistling was awful. Uggg.

To each his/her own! P.S. I think you meant Metallica? Can't stand them either!

Come back in a few days to see my thoughts on the rest of MAF. I guess it takes a lot from Paul to "wow" me. His solo career has had its ups and downs and for awhile, even though I bought every album, I was semi-disappointed. Maybe I expected too much - I was "spoiled" hy his Beatles/Wings output. As I mentioned before, I loved Flaming Pie and I also loved NEW. Was very pleasantly surprised with both. If Paul ever gives up writing new material (highly doubtful) or ceases touring (also doubtful- I think he'll tour until he keels over dead on the stage!) it really wouldn't bother me that much. I've had over 53 years of memories so far to relive. I understand that younger fans who perhaps first discovered him as a solo artist have a totally different perspective. It's almost midnight and I'm gonna shut up now.

It's been almost ten years since Memory Almost Full; in that period of time we've had one studio album, New, and Electric Arguments which, despite some good tracks, was a load of rubbish under a different name.
I understand your thinking, but disagree about Electric Arguments, which I thought was one the most energised and interesting albums he'd been involved with for years; it was nice to see his experimental side come to forefront again.
What was experimental about Electric Arguments? It veered between standard rock/pop and ambient noise. That is all.
'Experimental' isn't defined by the results, but by the approach taken to create them. It's the only time he's created a whole album in this cut-and-shut way to such success: Travelling Light is nothing like his other output, for example.

____________________________________________________________ Wingsoverke...always like your posts. Bruce and I talked about "Nod" earlier in this thread. Bruce loves it by the way. With me, it took longer. I was looking at the song strictly on its merits as a separate song. But it was a perfect follow-up song to "The End of the End" where Paul got serious thinking about his own mortality. Then I started to like the song on that merit. The other thing is that it is only 2 minutes long which I like. Sometimes Paul drags songs out too long. So in my opinion, it was a good ending to the album. I especially like the last half of MAF (after Gratitude). To each his own, I really like "The End of the End". I like it when Paul goes away from his normal "MO" and does a song where he gets personal about his own life. I love the words to "The End of the End". It's funny how some of the songs on MAF are wacky but he really gets serious on this one. He realizes how famous he is (with some luck involved) and he doesn't want his fans to get too sad at the end. He wants us to look at the good things a la "the glass is always half full".

___________________________________________________ I never want you to "shut up". Half the time, your posts get me laughing. Yes, I agree that we (as fans) can expect "too much". I always look at his total career even on a Paul song that I think isn't good/ So many songs in his 60 year career and a large percentage are good to very good. As I always have said, even his lower ranked albums usually have 3-4 songs that are terrific. I still remember what Bob Dylan said about Paul in Rolling Stone. I'm paraphrasing but Mr. Dylan said something to the effect that he is amazed how Paul just keeps going and how can anyone keep up to him. Somebody might find the actual quote for us. High praise indeed from a fellow phenomenal artist.

Bernie, I know you're busy with your guest(s) but wanted you to know I finished listening to MAF today (I mean Wednesday) The End Of The End is good - brought a tear to my eye as I said in another thread, I was thinking of my dad. I want that played at my funeral, along with several other of my favorite Paul/Beatles songs. Really really really didn't like the very very very bit! The rest (songs #10-3 bonus tracks) to me was forgettable, sorry. Was one an instrumental? See, I'm not even sure. Like I said before, most is not my "cup of tea."

I love the song also. It is perfect from a man in his 60's-70's to think about his mortality and the lyrics are great. He is telling his fans he has had a wonderful life and when he passes away he wants his life to be celebrated. MAF also has "That Was Me" which is about McCartney looking back at his life through the years and being amazed at his good fortune. I think these two songs are wonderful bookends on MAF.

Yes. Using the same logic I conclude that Bermuda Triangle is nothing like Barry Manilow's other output.

I like the lyrics to That Was Me. The melody, not so much. I couldn't even tell you anything about Vintage Clothes. House Of Wax I kinda like. I know, I'm hard to please!
