Wings at the Speed of Sound: Thoughts?

al Sabah:
Real trumpets, trombones, saxophones, clarinets, flutes instead of synthesizers. If people still made music like this, there might still be record stores. San Ferry Anne
After Silly Love Songs, San Ferry Anne is the best thing on the album, followed closely by Must Do Something About It. After that, it's all downhill at a pretty rapid clip.

I'll give ya Beware My Love and Let Em In.... I don't mind Time to Hide... Pretty good for Denny... But, for me, still too much non-Paul for me to laud this album.... misses a mark that was so laid out for it to hit big-time. Failed to capitalise on "timing" in a big way.... Silly Love Songs rules supreme.

It was a massive selling album, one of the top sellers of '76

1. Let 'Em In 2. The Note You Never Wrote 3. She's My Baby 4. Beware My Love 5. Wino Junko 6. Silly Love Songs 7. Cook Of The House 8. Time To Hide 9. Must Do Something About It 10. San Ferry Anne 11. Warm and Beautiful The perfect album as there isn't a weak track on there, Very consistent quality throughout, a well sequenced track-listing, flows well. Love the atmospheric production too. The bottom line for me is that it's far more engaging listen than the over rated BOTR. (Though BOTR is still an excellent album)
Love most of these songs! Especially Beware My Love, Wino Junko, Time to Hide, Let Em In, silly Love Songs. Speaking of Let Em In...did you ever hear LuLu's version...which features Paul. Love it! Inside Thing...Let Em In.
-
IMO, Paul got a bit too comfortable and lazy after the huge success of BOTR & the resulting European tours. Quality control dropped dramatically after that album. He lets unknowns such as Jimmy & Denny contribute songs to albums?!? Is this the same guy that shut George Harrison songs from albums only a few years earlier?? Democracy rarely works in bands.
-
''He lets unknowns such as Jimmy & Denny contribute songs to albums?!?'' Both major talents. The people who object to Paul not singing on every track are probably a little too obsessive about their idol. A good song is a good song, and the fact that Paul didn't sing lead is irrelevant as Wings were a great band and had proved they weren't just Paul's backing group.
-
Cook of the House should had been replaced with Sally G; other than that, Speed of Sound was a very good lp. Beware My Love was one of the best rock songs of the 70's and Silly Love Songs was one of the biggest selling singles ever. And I just love Let 'Em In, Note, Wino, San Ferry, and Time To Hide. Solid album!!

At the Speed of Sound is the most Wings album. Beware My Love alone is worth the price of admission, imo. I also quite like Denny's Time To Hide and Linda's only solo spot on a Wings album - the delightful Cook Of The House. Warm and Beautiful is one of Paul's best ballads. Like many things, I think this album has improved with age. Can't wait to hear the remaster!
I totally agree with you!

I actually listed Must Do Something About it. The rest are all boring and routine. Not a top track among them.

With all due respect, the album sold well on the back of its two predecessors and a massively received live tour. This follow-up could've had a couple of songs of toilet noises and it would've sold bucket loads. Had this album been better put together, with more Paul and better songs, it could've kept the rage and waves flowing to far greater heights. Rather, it cemented a peak for Wings, and solo Paul, there and then.

It's a real band album not just mccartney and musicians

Hardly. The album was huge all over the world. No. 1 in the U.S for 7 weeks, and was his most successful post-Beatles album, at least on the charts. Of course it didn't hurt that it came out while the Wings Over America tour was in progress.

Hardly, its their 2nd biggest seller. Average public reviews are 4 stars on iTunes and Amazon. Die hard 'precious Paul' fans and Beatles obsessives are not going to like anyone but their idol sing on a McCartney/Wings album Also, they probably let the 'professional' critics influence their judgement too.

totally agree how can an album with silly love song and let em in be called a crap album it's one of the best
-
Macca's songwriting on SOS is effortless and melodic. My only quip is the woman's metaphor of gravy on She's my baby. Ruins the song for me. This is an example where Paul needed a filter. Time to Hide is Denny's best song with Wings, but thats not saying much. Bland is the best thing I can say about it. Wino Junko is a poor rewrite of Medicine Jar and should not be on a Wings album. I think if Paul had been patient & took his best stuff from V&M and SOS, he would have 1 killer album. Instead, he had 2 good but not great albums.

Just to clarify, I'm not calling it a crap album.... I am calling it a failure to capitalise. Some brilliant tracks on there. But it could've and should've been so much better. Had a huge listening audience and was a time to nail it rather than dish off tracks to other members who aren't exactly as vocally adept or charismatic A good album, maybe, but not a great one, not a brilliant one. For me it will always feel like the job was 70 per cent done.
-
Is not a crap album, but it could be better, so much better. Is not better than BoTR, V&M or London Town, just because Paul decided to reduce his own control over the group. It seems to be a good decision but the result is songs like Cook Of The House, Wino Junko, The Note You Ever Wrote... it was 1976, Paul's highest moment of his life... if he wanted to, it would his best LP ever.

But it pretty much is. Not a poor track on there. Even 'Cook Of The House' is fun. I guess this album isn't for the die hards but more for the general public.
