'rock and roll' classics by lennon or 'run devil run' paul?

in John?s Bring It On Home To Me/Send Me Some Lovin? medley on RnR .. wholly cow, if that ain?t the sickest version of that song ever recorded then I don?t know what is
My favorite moment of the album, hands down!

SusyLuvsPaul:
Wow...those are both stunning...I especially like the one you wrote for Paul's
Thanks Susy yeah the RunDevilRun poem is a bit more poetic, John?s more matter of fact, less abstract imagery. I remember writing John?s, which started as a post but quickly morphed into the poem you see there. Then I consciously tried writing a poem about RDR to give equal time.. and I remember I even purposely made it the same # of lines (19), and made one line just ?McCartney?s name, like I had done with ?Lennon? in his .. anyway, glad you like. Its funny cause both of those pretty much wrote themselves, came so quick both albums totally inspire me. I just need to listen to RDR more often I?m almost with you there aakiboh, I think I have it at about #2, but honestly maybe #3, maybe even #4.. it gets tough, any given day. #1 for me is Sweet Little Sixteen. And then its tough with Slippin And Sliddin, Stand By Me, and Rip It Up/Ready Teddy.. but yeah, its probably my #2

I've gotta go against the curve, I LOVE the Rock and Roll album, It's better than any of lennon's albums up to that point, except for plastic ono band and imagine. His vocals are amazing, there's so much soul to it, and I love his somewhat corny imperssionations of some of the original performers of the songs Slippin and Sliddin is definitely my fav. track from the album, Ain't that a shame, be bop a lula, and peggy sue, are always very strong for me. Run Devil Run sounds more modern than rocky in my opinion, the lyrics are 50's but the music isn't (well, the 1-4-5 is ) I prefer the russian album to run devil run.

SusyLuvsPaul:
regarding albums of early classic rock standards, do you prefer 'rock and roll' album by john lennon or 'run devil run' by paul? they're each fabulous though really. i tend to lean towards 'devil' as somewhat more ear pleasing. it's less spontaneous and thrown together and casual than lennon's too, it' s more worked on and elaborate despite the rockabilly style.
I always prefered Choba B Cccp to either of those. Paul chose to pretend he'd never done a rock and roll album before when he was prmoting run devil run (Yes i know, it was only released in russia.. at first.. but did actually get a full release over here 2 years later)

The Lennon R&R album is the one album from him I didn't care for. Paul does a better job on both of his R&R cover albums (imho). It may be that for my taste, while Lennon's voice is one that is classic in this pop/rock era, it just doesn't lend itself to those 'oldie covers'. Paul's voice is way more versatile and thus, convincing with this songs that aren't his own...

rich n, I don?t understand how you can have that opinion : You must not agree with the sentiment I?m about to express.., but IMO 90% of the reason the Beatles took off from the beginning was Lennon?s vocal ability to breathe the kind of life never before seen/heard in these ?oldies covers?. Which at the time weren?t actually that old its wasn?t their originals that started it off, it was Twist and Shout, Rock N Roll Music, Money, Please Mr Postman... on and on. Seriously, you think John?s voice doesn?t lend itself to that kind of thing? Tough for me to even fathom that view point.. others can cover those songs, but John owned em. I loved Paul?s joking around cover of Besame Mucho in the Let It Be film though. I gotta hand it to him there.. that was genius, and I?m being serious. That was like sneaky good I think he had John?s ear 100% at that moment. And I haven?t seen the film in a while but I remember that moment well. John was watching, smiling, mouth hung open like ?wholly shit macca way to be!?

Run Devil Run by a country mile

John Lennon's Rock and roll - by far! It's got spirit and soul. Run Devil Run is clean and antiseptic and VERY far removed from the original Rock and Roll spirit. Choba BCCCP is badly recorded and catches McCartney in very bad voice.
-
I've always loved John's Rock and Roll LP. It's a great record. Paul's Run Devil Run is alot better than his Russian LP, but John's is the best as far as I'm concerned.

Totally agree. I don't like the Russia album that much, although it's PERFECT for a nice early, Sunday-morning drive. My expectations were quite low for Run Devil Run. Boy, was I in for a big shock! The energy and Paul's vocals blew me away.
-
Run Devil Run by a mile. Even Paul's own songs fit in with the oldies and he sounds great.

agreed audi! the more I listen to RDR the more I think Paul was singing as good as he had since like BTTE or TOW. really amazing, like you say great energy. I dug it up for you Susy I remember where the poems are, in one of my all-time favorite threads! I love those cover albums they did.

And for those not in the know, Paul NAILED IT live in concert: RUN DEVIL RUN (live at the PeTA concert 1999):
Great performance! -
audi thanks for posting that it does sound great.

I have the DVD -- great music, although it seemed that the crowd was expecting at least one or two Beatles tunes. But, judging from their response to "Run Devil Run," they loved Paul's set, nonetheless. Plus, we were all glad to see Paul returning to the public after losing his/our belioved Linda.

Totally, that was the inspiration I used for my poem, the force of Paul in the studio, dealing with his loss. all for one. all for Linda.

Is that an offical DVD release, because I've never seen it? I do have the Live at the Cavern DVD, and that is really good too.

Run Devil Run, great cd

That RDR clip is really good. you realize what a mouthful that song actually is to perform Paul's like a machine on it!
