'rock and roll' classics by lennon or 'run devil run' paul?

Magical Mystery Girl:
I personally feel that Lennon's Rock 'n' Roll album fell victim to the over production of the 70s. It would have been a lot better minus all the extra bells and whistles, especially the brass. It's rock 'n' roll. Keep it simple. I love Run Devil Run. It was a very tough time for Paul, and he channeled it well.
Here's the big difference in the situational context between the two: Lennon did it to escape a lawsuit, Paul did his initially for fun, ended up being his nursemaid through dark times for him. Both are good, but I think RDR is the better record overall. The best song of either album was John's "Stand By Me" cover. I wonder if not for Linda's death, and Paul had done this anyway, that maybe the RDR title track or even his awesome take on "All Shook Up" would've been the album single instead of "No Other Baby"?

Run devil run is more rock than John's rock album. One can get the original rock feeling, and that is because Paul is better musician than John. Paul' music is more passioned, have soul, then the result is always better. John was more racional and political, had a great voice, but as musician Paul is so much better. And " Lonsome town" is my favorite track

Are you saying "rational"? What does that have to do with the music? Not sure I understand what you're trying to say.

Paul for me!

John for me... Wow, you really dug up this thread huh?

Ok so Paul gets a few friends round with some down time on their hands and knocks off a no holds barred - every thing recorded in 2-3 takes- RnR album of classic covers (mainly!!) great vocals with all instrumentation following the party line(ie that set in stone by the original artists) polished with no rough edges !! John on the other hand was the more adventuress and did a slightly more idiosyncratic take on the well known class hicks "sweet little sixteen " being a standout egg-sample (or should that be egg- sandwich??)This album for me was John having a bit of fun with out having to work "too" hard .Any which ways, both got the job done, the band got paid and the boys did good !!

Vs you call it love these albums. That's not really a fair comparison. John definitely won that round. But putting "Lonesome Town" up against "Rip It Up" is like bringing a knife to a gun-fight. Her's a more fair fight:
vs. (Paul wins this one...and we're talking about a 58-year-old Paul up against a 35-year-old John) -

vs. (Paul wins this one...and we're talking about a 58-year-old Paul up against a 35-year-old John)Yours is a way better comparison of song and style and Paul does slay that vocal at the age of 58, that's really amazing! My 2 song battle there was literally top of head, two songs I really like on each album. Party is more like Rip It Up, but Paul on Lonesome Town is good You really think Paul's party beats John's Ready Teddy/Rip It Up? Maybe Paul's age does make his more impressive. I know a lot here prob think its better straight up, regardless of age. That is a really good comparison. For me John has the edge because the songs better also, his delivery is fab, and c'mon, you know the jug of vodka that guy was sporting You know another funny thing, I think Rip It Up was a track used from the 1973 Spector sessions. I could be wrong on that... But if so John may have only been 33 on the track. cuase of the whole delay in release that ensued. and John referenced his true age (same as Ringo) in the Ringo track I'm the Greatest, now I'm only 32. and so I guess its possible he could have even been younger!

There isn't even a contest, Run Devil Run literally destroys John's effort!

I agree completely. John's effort was a drunken mess, uninspired as it was made to escape a lawsuit. Run Devil Run is a gritty, fun, yet respectful to the originals album - one of the better ones in Paul's catalog. In my opinion, Paul has never had a better run of four straight studio albums than Flaming Pie, Run Devil Run, Driving Rain, and Chaos and Creation.

I love Run Devil Run and consider it one of Paul's top 10 albums. The line-up of musicians he got together for that is just awesome. That said, Rock and Roll is a classic. Releasing such an album in the mid-70's was so different, when it seemed that everything coming out was either progressive or singer/songwriter. I'm glad he did not try and reproduce the songs the way they were done in the first place. That is what made The Beatles covers so unique and great. They didn't try to copy. Lennon is in fine voice, even though Spector's production is overwrought at times. But Stand By Me and most of the album is just great. I love it! After all, it's Lennon!

I respectfully disagree with you, especially about Driving Rain. I consider it to be one of Paul's weakest albums.

No one can compete with Paul, nobody - he's in a league of his own. Always has been. John was great, and no one was a bigger fan than I was and still am, but even he was no match for McCartney. / As for the sound of his voice, it will take a lot more than being 70 years old, and subtle changes in his vocal performance to ever change the conditions I mentioned above. Putting Paul up against any other musician is really just a shallow exercise.
