Only Love Remains video
-
Has there ever been an explanation as to why Paul left "Only Love Remains" off of his McCartney Years video DVD set? It was one of the most intricate videos he's ever done and a very touching one as well. It was a complete non-stop take with no edits. Took 'em several takes and many hours to get it right. On top of that, it's a beautiful song that utilizes the unique (and in my opinion far superior) mix than what was on the Press To Play album.
-
I wasn't aware of those details. Good question, by the way.

We never did get an explanation, as far as I'm aware. It was one of the final screen appearances of actor Gordon Jackson and there was some speculation that a performing rights issue might have been the cause. However, I think it's much more likely Paul deliberately left it off just to annoy fans, as he always does with such projects - there's always something missing. Self-sabotage. I don't agree that the single mix of OLR is better than the album mix, which is pretty stripped down and bare and all the better for it.

Do you have the link for that video? Not sure which one you're referring to? Thanks

I heard something similar regarding the estate of Gordon Jackson not giving permission for the video to be included......or something like that. love2travel, here's the YT link to the 'Only Love Remains' video.

love that song so much, i remember being so excited seeing the video on "the tube" for the first time in 86! As for Gordon Jackson (Cowley!!!!), i never read anything say that *except* people on here surmising that that was the reason. I think it's become an urban myth hehe! When enough people say it, years later everyone thinks its true cos they remember people saying it! (Though it might be true, tho can't see any reason for it myself)

I hadn't seen that video before, although I love the song. Seems a shame that it was left off the McCartney Years. And I really liked the arrangement as well.

I have seen this video before. Glad to be reminded of it. Such a beautiful, sweet, romantic song. Love the piano 2.

Hey Kestrel...thanks for the link!!! It's quite touching, isn't it? I also would have liked to have seen it on the McCartney years., as well. Love it when Paul uses an orchestra in the songs...it makes such a difference

Overproduced saccharin dross. Footprints craps all over this. The mid 80's were not kind to him. His reputation nose-dived and he made it uncool to like Paul McCartney. I know, because me, my friends and anyone who happened to be a fan took a lot of heat defending him!
-
It's funny. In the mid 80s, video shows put on a lot of Paul videos. (and Beatles). I took a lot of heat for everything I liked and Paul wasn't one of them. I think that nobody wanted to argue with me about Paul (plus, My mom liked him too. way better then Lennon)

I do remember this video. I was a 20 year old student at the time and already a big Macca fan for years. But this video was soooo not cool... even a bit embarrassing to be honest... still don't like the song for that reason. Press to Play ain't my favorite album either. The best songs imo were the B-sides: It's not true and Write Away...

Amen. When I heard the words, "If you should take your love away from me...I'm only gonna want it back..." Oh God, I just knew this was going to be soppy and cringeworthy.

That's cool.

The "Oklahoma was never like this.." bit still has me scratching my head. I like the video more than the song, although it would have been cool to have some of Paul's friends (Ozzy, Peter Gabriel, Clapton, Bowie, Ringo) make cameos on the train.

I was in junior high when the "Press" video was airing pretty regularly on MTV. At the time, I didn't appreciate the video because I was not aware of what a big deal it was for Paul to actually be on public transportation. I would say that was the case for the majority of MTV viewers, as well.

Speaking as a fan who is not insistent that Paul`s "rocks out" (now that`s cringeworthy) the whole time, I have always liked the song. I did not like the video much at the time, but it certainly is poignant now.

I really liked that video; very simple idea, but very effective. Shortly after the release I visited London for the first time, in secret hoping to see Paul at the Underground (being young and naieve)
