      Hendrix Ibsen:

I doubt that a free creative spirit like Paul McCartney run computer statistics to find his musical ways.

      Maybe he should.

He's old, but not stiff. I seriously hope not, except if he did something for an experiment. which would be like to follow your heart anyway. McCartney has a heart, let's continue to use it.

Sales or not, I think at least it will be made better music by using it. Otherwise it becomes just business as usual.

The success of "FourFiveSeconds" must have surprised even McCartney. A musical chemistry between Kanye West, Rihanna and Paul McCartney worked better in execution than it looked logical on paper.

Boom, Kanye West flew out to Armenia for a free gig for the people there earlier today, who else does that? A treasure of my generation. But let's find some TMZ-articles on his wife to roll our eyes at.

Wow! He really IS like John Lennon! :

Yup. Elvis Costello is more like John Lennon. So is Denny Laine!

Sorry...Denny Laine is nowhere in the same league as John Lennon. :

Compared to Kanye West he is. Which was my point.

You can't be seriously comparing Kanye West, which is considered universally as one of the most exciting artists in cross-genres of the last 20 years to a decent side man and band member like Denny Laine. You don't like the artist, it's fine...

I couldn't agree more. You don't have to bare your soul to write a driving rock song. What does Stairway to Heaven tell you about Robert Plant? Is Bohemian Rhapsody autobiographical? I hope not.

That's the craziest thing I've read all week. "The researchers analyzed 30-second snippets of roughly 17,000 songs from the U.S. Billboard pop charts from 1960 to 2010. Computer programs were used to categorize each song based on musical properties, instrumentation used, chord patterns and other elements." Based on that, hip hop has had a greater impact than the British Invasion? How does one thing connect to another?

I never said you have to bare your soul to write a driving rock song. Rock songs can be enjoyable regardless of how they're inspired. My point is that Paul sometimes seeks out people who do bare their souls, because it doesn't come as easily to Paul; that's the harder edge I was talking about with John Lennon or Elvis Costello or Kanye West. Since losing John as a partner, Paul likes to collaborate every once in a while with someone who's guaranteed to make sparks fly. Not that all the results are equally good, but it keeps him energized about doing music, I think.

But he's also written songs with Michael Jackson, Lulu and Linda McCartney. I think he probably just works with whoever he wants to work with regardless of how anyone might analyze it.

Yes, exactly, I said "sometimes" he seeks out edgy people "once in a while", so that's my point. He indulges all different kinds of collaborators, and when he wants edgy, he picks people like Elvis and Kanye (and the Bloody Beetroots and Youth and Freelance Hellraiser) who have a reputation for pushing boundaries.

I never compared Denny Laine to Kanye West as a solo artist. I compared him as a collaborator with Paul. And my comparison is spot on. Denny Laine in the LEAST produced a hit song with Paul that is remembered thirty six years later (Mull). Paul's work with Kanye is already yesterday's news, will never be performed in concert by Paul and in thirty six years will be a footnote in Paul's biography.

Kanye's album isn't even out yet, and it will supposedly have even more tracks with Paul (or at least one), so I wouldn't go calling it yesterday's news just yet. 😉

Come on. Do you REALLY think this will have an impact on Paul's career like working with Elvis Costello did, or when he had Denny Laine in his band? Get real. If Paul plays any of these songs in concert like he has Mull or My Brave Face, then I will change my mind.

For Kanye. Not so much for Paul. Yes, he recorded some tunes. Will he play them live? If they are such a big deal in his career, he will.

I was only saying that the story is not over yet, because the album isn't out yet. But it depends what you mean by impact. The Costello collaborations resulted in two top 40 hits (one for Paul, one for Elvis), and a few Top 40 (but no Top 10) albums. The Kanye collaborations have already resulted in three Top 40 hits (including a Top 10), and Kanye's album will surely hit #1 or 2. (Two of those hits are still in the Hot 100 as of now.) Paul and Elvis performed together for a benefit that was not televised, and they didn't even perform any of the hits they wrote together (unless you count "Mistress and Maid" as a hit). Paul and Kanye performed one of their songs on a major awards show, and Kanye has performed two others on high-profile shows, too, and this collaboration has been cause for endless discussions on the web, and not just among music nerds. I can't predict the future, and I will always love the Elvis tunes more than the Kanye ones, but the culture is changing, and Kanye has a huge, dedicated fan base that has already stuck with him for a decade and a half. You may very well be right, but you also may be wrong. 😉
