Petition to get Wings in R&R HOF

Done & passed link on to FB friends. Thanks for posting

This requires believing that the other members of Wings rate induction, since Paul is already in for his post-Beatle career. That's preposterous.
-
I think Wings deserves a R & R Hall of Fame place. Although obviously dominated by Paul's songs, production and lead vocals. They were still a band with members (albeit with a few different line-ups) that performed live and recorded as a integral unit. Paul wanted it to be a band known as Wings although some albums like RRS and BOTR got the "Paul McCartney and Wings" credit, probably due to record company pressure.

The closest analogy I can think of is Bruce Springsteen got the E-Street Band inducted on their own. But, for the most part, the E-Street band members were pretty consistent over the entire career of Bruce. And, they were a big part of his "sound". To get Wings members inducted, one has to argue that between 1972-1980, Wings members deserved induction. Besides Denny & Linda, it was a shifting lineup. And, lets face it. None of the Wings members did things beyond Paul's input that serves HoF consideration. Paul wrote almost all the songs, produced, etc.

True. but they were not inducted in the Performer category, which is what the petition is requesting; E Street Band are in under "The Award for Musical Excellence" (the same category Ringo was inducted in last year, btw).

I don't think it's a legitimate request.

Come on: Denny Laine is the world's greatest genius:

Pink Floyd had all manner of line up changes (Barrett out,Gilmour in, Wright out, Waters out, Wright back in again ) and they were inducted so I do think Wings deserves to be inducted in their own right too.

To further your point, would Paul himself, as a solo artist have been inducted into the HOF if not for the piggy back right on Wings? We fans can argue until we're blue in the face the merits of Paul's post 1980 music...but it's a fact that it has not been widely accept by music fans as a whole (based on sales)...and you can't use his success as a live artist (post 1980) since basically all of the big bands/acts of the 60's and 70's sell out their shows too...and the only difference between today's version of Paul McCartney and other older bands still touring (Rolling Stones, Who, etc) is that they didn't change their stage name for their post 1980 shows...thus they only get in once (is that fair?) And Paul's shows these days are a small dabbling of showcasing new material mixed among a huge dose of celebrating his 60's/70's success

I agree. Paul's already in as a solo artist, which includes Wings. But Wings was like his current band, his backing group. Even though Denny had a few songs. So if you believe that Denny Laine and Linda deserve to be in the RRHOF then by all means vote for Wings to be in. But Paul doesn't need to be in again for Wings. Just my opinion.

Exactly. Wings does NOT deserve to be in the HOF. Sorry, fans.

Isn't Clapton in it like 3 times for The Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo arist? Yes, he's the only one. Why not Paul?

Sorry,I have to disagree with you there. Wings were Wings and Paul was a member of the group. Wings never backed any member of the group. Its true that a few of their albums were credited as 'Paul McCartney & Wings' but that was just EMI's marketing division highlighting a Beatles name to flog a few more records. Paul has always maintained that he was embarrassed by those credits. While its also true that Paul basically led the group (after all he paid the wages), Wings were no more Paul's backing group than Roxy Music were Bryan Ferry's backing group, or the Faces were Rod Stewart's backing group,or Blur were Damon Albarn's backing group etc etc etc.

O.K. I'm starting to see your point. Let's take CCR for example. Basically, the band was all John Fogerty, but all member were inducted. Is that what you're arguing? But, Paul solo induction took into account Wings, didnt it? Can they now honor Wings and say it was distinct from Paul's solo career? Seems like the HoF is making up the rules as they go along, so nothing would surprise me.

I agree. When I think of HOF bands, it usually has more than one star in the band. Jagger and Richards, Plant and Page, Daltry and Townsend etc.

What do the fans who were too young for the Beatles, and then discovered Paul & Wings at a young age think? In other words, they were not Beatles fans first and only found out about them through being a Wings fan in the early to mid '70's. (I don't qualify)
