The Paul McCartney Collection (1993) tapes and vinyl
-
Hi everyone, I stumbled on an interesting topic last night which seems to be one of the whitest spots on the McCartney map. I started collecting Paul's music in Mid-'93 when I was eleven. My first CD was the '93 remaster of Wild Life. For many years to come, the releases of "The Paul McCartney Collection" would be my first encounter with many of his albums. Many contemporary ads stated that the collection was to be issued on tape as well. But I have NEVER seen one. Well, until last night, when I spotted two tiny pictures on discogs. Does anybody of you know more about these tapes? Were all albums released on tape? Did they have the bonus tracks? And - as a side note: I even own a Greek vinyl-copy of "Band On The Run" with the "little cover on white"-collection Artwork. Is this the only one issued? I have also never seen another one. Thanks for your reply if you know anything about the topic

I would of thought that by '93 pre-recorded cassettes would of been defunct. CD had been around for about 10 years. It says on Wikipedia - "The Paul McCartney Collection is a series of 16 remastered CDs by Paul McCartney of his solo and Wings albums, with most adding bonus tracks". So I think unlikely this collection was put out on cassette but maybe they were somewhere. I think the Greek vinyl Band On The Run could be a bootleg.

No no no! Cassette releases lasted until the end of that decade! I have cassette singles of free as a bird for example, and in 1996 every Tori Amos single release and album was on cassette - she'd stopped by her next album in 1998, but some still carried on. Tapes were still a huge thing. And look who released an album on cassette in 1997?! https://www.discogs.com/Paul-McCartney-Flaming-Pie/release/3469391 Oh and "cds had been around 10 years by 1993" - that may offcially be so, but hardly anyone actually had a cd player til the late 80s (only posh houses!) - we didn't get one in our house til xmas 1990!!! My first cd was tripping the live fantastic!

I don't think any of the Paul McCartney Collection was ever released on vinyl. By '93 most vinyl pressing plants had been closed in the U.S. Even now, with the vinyl resurgence, most of the pressings are from Europe.

I got my first CD player in 1984 and we were far from posh I think it cost around $800 (Aussie dollars) for a Rotel (a good brand) but I traded in some older hi-fi equipment to help pay for it. CD's I think were around $30 which did seem expensive compared to vinyl and cassettes. First CD was Tug Of War and also Rumours and Hotel California were amongst early ones I got. I was still recording CDs and vinyl on to blank cassettes for many years to play in the car.

I guess i meant in the UK when i was on about "posh" - i know it took until about 1988 for cd's to start filling music shops and pushing lps to the back of the store. Most of my friends didn't get CD players til 88/89, we were late in 1990

I purchased my first cd player in 1987 and my first cd was Kate Bush's 'Hounds Of Love'. Not sure what my first Paul related cd was though. Probably Band On The Run although I suspect Flowers In The Dirt was the first new cd album

I stole my first CD player in 1991.

I worked in the O.R. of a hospital from 1982-1987 and I remember one of the eye doctors having a portable CD player and letting us listen with the headphones. Wow! Sounded so fantastic to us! They were actually invented in 1965, but the players have only been available commercially since Oct. 1982. My first Paul CD was Flowers In The Dirt (1989)
