KOTB charting

Seems to me on Paul McCartneys official website, the man reaching the top of any chart should be celebrated, especially when it's one of the majors like Billboard! Jazz artist all over the freaking world work their entire lives to reach that position!
It's certainly worth noting that Paul is now in good company with brilliant jazz artists like Herbie Hancock. The top position of Billboard's Jazz Chart is worth celebrating, as was Electric Argument's No. 1 position on Billboard's Indie Albums Chart. Not quite getting why there's all this attitude just because it didn't hit No. 1 on the Pop Albums Chart. As if a Top 5 album were a dismal failure or something.

I'll talk for myself on this one--the original comments were about how Paul hadn't had a number 1 in a long time, and because of this we should all be ecstatic. Some folks then pointed out that he had indeed, several times, with his past several albums. That's around when there were posts about how because we weren't going crazy with joy and exclamation points, we were being negative. Paul did quite well with the album, sold more copies than I thought he would sell, and I'm happy about that. I'm not jumping up and down with exuberance, but I'm happy for him. The album has done well, but it's not like it's flying off of the shelves.

Makes sense to me. Some of the others' comments were obnoxious, but your position is solid, all the way.

Thank you for thinking so.

The pluses of all this: Paul's voice was about as good as it's going to get at this stage and people responded to it by buying the album. Critics seem to love this album As mentioned previously, Paul seemed genuinely into this project Because it's a new or largely unlistened to style to most, though not all of us, it created a new dialog as we all learned to appreciate this music. The lone minus - I wish the public would give this much attention to Paul's albums which are comprised of his own work

Very true, rich. But am I right that this album didn't sell as well as Paul's pop/rock albums? And I think his last several albums of pop/rock have been well received, right? Mind you, even with all of this being said, Paul deserves MUCH more attention and praise then he currently gets...

KOTB has sold a lot better and a lot more copies than Electric Arguments. Now I happen to like both albums (well actually I adore EA and put KOTB solidly in the "like" category) but it irritates me to no end that EA got such short shrift on the charts. But it's also hard to compare KOTB sales with, say, MAF sales because people were buying a lot more CDs in 2007 than they are now.

How quickly we forget: "Jun 13, 2007 PAUL MCCARTNEY?S ?MEMORY ALMOST FULL? DEBUTS AT #3 ON BILLBOARD TOP 200 Inaugural Release From Hear Music Lands Legendary Artist His Highest Chart Position In 10 Years Widely hailed by critics as one of the best albums in Paul McCartney?s solo career, ?Memory Almost Full? sold 160, 541 copies across all retail outlets in the U.S. in its debut week, landing the record at #3 on Billboard Top 200 chart. The inaugural release from Hear Music brought McCartney his highest chart debut in ten years as a solo artist (1997?s ?Flaming Pie? debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 chart). This week?s sales saw a significant increase over McCartney?s 2005 release, ?Chaos and Creation in the Backyard,? which peaked at #6 on the Billboard chart with first week sales totaling more than 90,000 copies. In addition, ?Memory Almost Full? is the first McCartney album to be made available digitally, selling 15,598 digital albums in its first week. ?We are delighted ?Memory Almost Full? is receiving such a warm and enthusiastic reception from fans,? said Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment who also oversees Hear Music. ?The success of Paul?s new album illustrates our unique ability to connect artists with audiences across a broad retail spectrum.? The renowned musician is experiencing a career renaissance with ?Memory Almost Full? earning critical praise and strong support from radio with the first U.S. single, ?Ever Present Past.? The single continues to gain momentum across multiple radio formats including the #1 new and active single at AC, #3 at Classic Rock, and # 10 on the AAA Tracks Chart. The video single, ?Dance Tonight? has been added in medium rotation at VH1 and part two of McCartney?s exclusive interview with ABC?s Good Morning America airs Thursday, June 14." http://news.starbucks.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=102

Also, EA shouldn't even be a factor in this argument, as it was not promoted at the same level -- not to mention that it was a released under a pseudonym.

Agreed. I'm more impressed that EA made it to #1 for that reason than I am with KOTB's #1.

Am I wrong that digital sales also factor into sales numbers now, though? I thought that the iTunes sales were counted in at least the mainstream charts...I could be wrong, though.

Actually I do remember that - but I also remember how this very site's members trashed it and now it's considered (unfairly) to be Chaos and Creation's ugly redheaded stepsister

My how times have changed. Nowadays, 160,541 would be considered a big seller and more than enough for a No. 1. A few weeks ago, Leonard Cohen's new album was at No. 3 and sold only 34,o00 copies. And yes, Walliebaby, digital sales are part of the total but the rise in digital sales still hasn't made up for the massive drop in CD sales for most artists. So, considering that, and considering that KOTB is a jazz album (which are almost never in the top 10 of the main Billboard chart), I'd say Paul's done pretty well with KOTB.

Agreed. I've mentioned a few times that I'm surprised that it's done so well, and am happy for Paul that it has. As you pointed out, if KOTB had been released a few weeks ago, or even a few weeks from now, it might easily have hit #1.

I feel it's done as well as it could have done to be honest, indeed maybe even a little bit better than expected i suppose you have to wonder how much longer pyhiscal sales have left in this day and age though.

Very true. I see a day, coming soon, when CD's will be bought as collectibles, just like vinyl, but not as cool as vinyl.

Reality isn't nearly so simple. Adele's "21" sold 291,000+ this week -- a drop of 59% from her 700,000+ sales the week before. Some artists still move massive numbers of albums. Paul hasn't been one of them for some time. That's just reality.

Left Hand Man would just like some fans to agree with him. I didn't see where he wrote if you don't say KOTB is brilliant you're not showing enough respect, did he really write that? If he did, it's not the most terrible unforgivable thing in the world. Its the flip side of some here really putting KOTB down. The other side of the coin. It stands to reason there are going to be some who love KOTB, some who hate it. Jazz is a valid musical genre art form which originated in the U.S. It's highly regarded by the cognesenti, the avid appreciators of jazz. Actually "hot jazz" is fast and all over the place and can be quite stimulating and enlivening. "Cool Jazz" (slower) is nice for facilitating other moods, of calm and relaxation. Chillin' I recall Joni Mitchell and Sting among others getting heavy into jazz. They didn't think it sucks.
left hand man:
McCartney voice is stellar on this album, I totally understand why he sings the songs the way he does. It does evoke that old school lounge type atmosphere! I can't stop listening to this masterpiece by McCartney!
your correct Susy, he didn't use the word brilliant, he said masterpiece which in all walks of life is better than brilliant yet can mean the same thing!!! thanx for taking the time to look though all my posts to try and catch me out tho
