KOTB charting

Seems to me on Paul McCartneys official website, the man reaching the top of any chart should be celebrated, especially when it's one of the majors like Billboard! Jazz artist all over the freaking world work their entire lives to reach that position!
It IS worth celebrating. No. 1 on the Jazz charts and No. 7 (in its second week) on the Billboard charts are BOTH worth celebrating. Paul picked very good people to worth with -- not just his producer but also Diana Krall and the other top-notch musicians. And from Diana's interview with Maccablog recently, it sounds like they were all thrilled to work with Paul. Anything that brings attention to jazz records and jazz musicians is a good thing. In her interview with Maccablog, Diana praised the way that Paul experimented vocally on the record:
It looks like something out of a vinyl post-1940s. Paul singing into a microphone that was used by Nat King Cole. I played and I had chills listening to this melancholy, this fragility. And then, on some tracks, like "My Valentine", he wrote for the record, his voice became blues, powerful like a crooner. He told me he was not sure whether to improvise: this is not true. He returned these songs in all directions.
She also pointed out that many jazz musicians have covered Paul's songs in the past:
It is Paul McCartney: a musician who has always composed music with complex structures. At the time of the Beatles, he influenced many jazz musicians: Duke Ellington, Count Basie, who took over "Michelle" and "Help!" - Or Ella Fitzgerald, whose interpretation of "Something in the Way She Moves" (funny that she mistakes that as a lennon-mccartney song!) is sublime. I myself recorded "For No One"
So clearly there was mutual respect when it came to recording KOTB.

It would be great if there was mutual respect on this forum, instead of comments that try and downplay McCartney's achievement! I think McCartney put his heart and soul into this project, he didn't just mail it in, these songs mean a great deal to him, it was a labor of love! Jazz artist like... Herbie Hancock George Duke Brian Culbertson Jeff Loeber Paul Jackson Jr. Boney James Marcus Miller etc. are all working hard and have released excellent albums lately, some people make it seem like there are no jazz fans, but these people sell out their shows just like rock artist do, and they have a large following.

mutual respect works both ways, we're entitled to our opinion, its good he has a N01 in one chart albeit a mickey mouse one.

I think that several folks have commented that the number 1 was a cool thing. I'm just not sure quite what you're after here? I think the level of excitement people have shown is level to Paul's not reaching #1 on the pop charts, but instead reaching #1 on the Jazz chart. Oh, and I don't recall anyone saying Paul had "mailed in" the album, but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps one person did, but I wouldn't call out the forum for the comments of a few...

Actually, what it says is that good music isn't always commercial. That should hardly be a shock to members of this forum. Jeez.

as far as i can see he's not really be saying anything apart from trying to preach to people about Jazz, his opinion is Jazz is brilliant, thats fine i can appreciate that, I find it for the most boring and crap, Jazz had its heyday during the first half of the last century, lets all be thankful its never recovered from those heady heights or there would have been many more car accident from people falling asleep at the wheel.
-
See what I mean about the comments! Who's preaching to anyone, and who said jazz was brilliant, (even though it is) I never said that? What I'm saying is McCartney has a number one album on a major chart, there's absolutely nothing Mickey Mouse about hitting the top of a Billboard chart! As I said all kinds of bands all over the freaking world are working their tails off trying to hit any of Billboards charts, whether it's rock, pop, country, jazz or whatever, Billboard is the cream of the freaking crop!

its all in your mind .. no doubt Paul will be at the head of the Jazz awards next year to up its profile. how do you think true Jazz artist who never get any recognition will feel about that?
-
I think they would be happy for him, just as McCartney should be if one of them hit the so called pop charts! I don't think they are that petty! They appreciate good music.

of course they will be happy, he's upped the profile of their music, something which true Jazz artist aren't managing to do hence the reason he will get a Jazz award. lets say, Paul brought KOTB out when he sold albums by the bucket-load, he would probably have the biggest selling Jazz album of all time, i don't mean this to sound rude but it doesn't say much for the guys your standing up for.

so as long as we accept that pauls standard's album is excellent and the jazz album charts is a big thing we are **showing respect.**however any viewpoint that is different from the above is 'not showing enough respect' hmmmmmm

Left Hand Man would just like some fans to agree with him. I didn't see where he wrote if you don't say KOTB is brilliant you're not showing enough respect, did he really write that? If he did, it's not the most terrible unforgivable thing in the world. Its the flip side of some here really putting KOTB down. The other side of the coin. It stands to reason there are going to be some who love KOTB, some who hate it. Jazz is a valid musical genre art form which originated in the U.S. It's highly regarded by the cognesenti, the avid appreciators of jazz. Actually "hot jazz" is fast and all over the place and can be quite stimulating and enlivening. "Cool Jazz" (slower) is nice for facilitating other moods, of calm and relaxation. Chillin' I recall Joni Mitchell and Sting among others getting heavy into jazz. They didn't think it sucks.

Funny how that applies to more things than just KOTB on here..
