That Paul faces his final curtain. He did alright did Paulie at the jubilee, and I thought he really tried hard to deliver and to a certain extent he succeeded. He nailed All My Loving, for instance, but the signs are naked to all of us: it is a real struggle and he is becoming like Sinatra did after about 65 - a shadow of himself. I fear with these kind of shows he is gradually eroding his legacy and to many he is irrelevant. A sad state of affairs of being alive really - when he should be embraced and loved even more. Every time I now feel so nervous that he does not embarrass himself on these kind of shows, he is just about getting away with it at the moment. Please let the olympics be the very last of these events for Paul. There ARE many songs he can still really deliver which won't attract the criticism or strain on his voice that it does with many. I hope someone will tell him as he still has so much to offer - even live. However, more importantly his song writing is still very strong, as evident from My Valentine, as is his creative instinct, see The Fireman etc. His recorded voice is still OK, and this is the main reason why I am so frustrated that there has been no bona fide solo album for 5 years - the longest in his career. Every month counts to get as much wonderful new music out of this genius while his voice can still deliver. It is real proof why live performance needs to take second fiddle from now, or have a real rethink. Our dreams of hearing certain songs will mainly always be dreams now as sadly he will not do them justice. I enjoyed last night and he still kicked many of the others into touch, but we must all take a reality check.

Sadly I agree with this, the Zocalo show and Jubilee performance have really highlighted how bad he sounds on some songs live. He gets away with it at his own show but not on these TV broadcasts, the verdict has been almost universally negative everywhere other than here and it erodes his legacy. As you say there are still songs in his catalogue that he can do some justice, he should at least stick to those. The very fact we are having this discussion on a site full of his fans says it all really. Just think what they are saying elsewhere...

I think we are taking the reality check Plastic. I'm hoping the Olympics will be the last of these big tv performances and he heads into the studio after his birthday to finish off the album. I also hope he knocks the constant (it seems that way to me) touring on the head, it's time now. I actually think he is still very charasmatic and entertaining, and rocks out hard (unlike Cliff :shock and in the studio is still very relevant (My Valentine, I Want To Come Home, Dance till We're High). It's just his voice that can't always keep up. I think he if he bowed out of public performances (on such a large scale) and toured smaller more solo material he would be ending on a high note. He is still held in very high regard but it often appears to be 'oh no not Paul McCartney again' Record a few more albums, work on writing, film scores there is so much he can do behind the scenes.

By the way his clip on You Tube of the Diamond Jubilee is mainly very positive. I do think we tend to be over critical at times as well.

Yeah, I think he did alright last night particularly All My Loving and second half of MMT and think the criticism is way too harsh, but it is a warning to be heeded. I do not want the memory to be like it was for Ali for his last couple of fights.

I have to agree, the writing is sadly on the wall,i hope that come the opening ceremony he can pull it out once more and give a performance that will wipe his weak set from the jubilee for our memories. Your comparison to Ali is apt and one i remember all too well,Paul is a treasure who sadly i don't think will be fully appreciated in the wider world till its all too late

I think we are over critical at times because we know that he can do so much better & still wow 'em on certain songs. He is just picking ongs on emotion...Beatles emotion. Now he should start listening to some of our suggestions.

Sadly, I have to agree. Just watched his 15-minute portion of the show. I sort of cringe when he starts doing songs lke "Let It Be," one just knows he will strain to reach notes. Again on "Ob La Di..." When there's lots going on musically and the others sing along to cover up his straining it works out okay. But, realistically, he should soon stop with the big tours and stadiums. He did sound good, however, on "All My Loving" and portions of MMT.

I sat watching it with Love2Travel and she thought it was okay, but i thought it was appalling, it was the usual rough voice in front of millions of TV viewers, it was pretty poor. I think he should stop going to an opening of an envelope and concentrate on making albums as you said, i think that's what i'd prefer him to do now.

Yep true. But really he has been sounding this way for about 5 yrs now certainly since Chaos at Abbey Rd. With very limited time last night (he always sounds better after warming up) and having to pick songs that fit the occasion, I thought he did a good job. Not perfect or faultless but a good job. You could tell he was really trying. If he had come out and performed Coming Up he would have done a better job but is that what this Diamond Jubilee crowd wanted to hear? He would have been better on Back in the USSR or Get Back but would they have fitted the occasion? He didn't do Hey Jude (easy option-the audience sings most of it) but now folks are saying he should have sung that! But my personal opinion is to finish now, go out with a bang with the Olympics. He can then tour small if he wants to. But then we have to accept we won't be hearing Paul on our TV's or at a stadium near us anytime soon.

No that is why I say it's time to stop. Because things are becoming an effort. Certainly not his bass playing or his musicianship but his voice. It's all an effort now. He's still an absolute legend through his playing and his songs but not his voice. Sad but true. But then we all clamour for him to tour again, come to my backyard, do a city near me!! Why isn't he touring the US this summer?? We breed his continual performing. He needs to focus on his songwriting, recording. If he toured small just for his fans (doing more solo stuff) he could still get the live kick he still enjoys. Also we'd be a lot more accepting of the weathering/battering his voice is taking. Just the continual performing as a Beatle should stop now. His 70th Birthday is a good excuse.

The only thing that perhaps he should stop is doing live performances in England. As you can see that around the world, there are plenty of people who joyfully will pay to see Paul sing and are not complaining about his voice. Of course you always do have the option of not going or listening to any of the you tubes if they are bothering you so much!! This subject makes my blood boil and I think it's very rude to be trying to tell Paul he should cut out live shows!! It would be great really, we could hear him play more in America then!! OK rant over 😉

I'll think you find he is getting criticism in the US too, especially after SNL though the Grammy's were great. (Just don't talk about the guitar jam and Bruce!!) I love Paul, adore him! As a person and a musician. I actually enjoyed the Diamond Jubilee, he was most definitely the one with star appeal. But enough is enough. End the big live performances with the Olympics, take a step back and get in the recording studio. Of course this is my own opinion and Paul can do (and will do) exactly whatever he wants.

My favourite Paul related album is Band On The Run. He was 32 when he made that. My favourite Paul related concert was when I saw Wings for the first, and only time, in 1976. Paul was 34 then and at his peak as a live performer. Now,through no fault of his own, he's over double that age.....and it shows. It just leaves me sad seeing and hearing him these days. It's like when I watch Laural & Hardy being interviewed when they were in their sixties and looking like old men. Although I wish he would,Paul won't ever stop playing live though. He loves the adulation and the money too much. He'll probably end up doing a Sid James or a Tommy Cooper and will simply peg out on stage during a show. With hindsight, its a great pity that Paul didn't pack up live performances after the Japanese fiasco in 1980 and instead simply concentrate on making great albums over the last 32 years. Unfortunately that's just not Paul's style.

Sadly I have to agree with this thread, I was actually trying to defend Macca on Twitter from people who thought he was too old, lost is voice etc. and to be honest I found his performance and song choices unsatisfactory. He needs to take it easy with the live concerts now perhaps.

While I thought he did well last night I still agree with this thread. REALLY sadly His voice isn't suited to these one off gigs. The only time he seems to be on form is towards the end of a tour when his voice has got used to things. In Manchester and Liverpool in Dec '11 he sounded fantastic, but that seems to be a rare thing nowadays
