in the interest of fair play i have to add the maybe im amazed sounded every bit as bad as i remembered
so its a fact then, even back then when he was still singing great, pauls biggest problem was his own editing in a live context!OMG! That was excruciatingly bad! I'm glad he didn't sound like that when I saw him in '90 in Atlanta!
yeah not a patch on Hey Jude from the same gig.
Guys, that's a Wings performance. I'd bet the farm on it. The person who posted that has it from January '90. No way.
Say goodbye to the farm, i was at the gig 2 days before that one and it was as bad then, i even have a bootleg video of the show i was at and it was painful.
Except for the moments where Paul was clearly struggling, he sounded amazingly like his '76 self in that clip. Now I see why LazyD loves Paul's voice on that tour. He sounded fantastic. Also, I was convinced that it was a Wings performance because it sounds like Joe English's drumming, not Chris Witten(?). Bye-bye, farm.

As for the conspiracy theory, I blame One Direction for ruining Paul's performance. I can picture the five of them gnawing on Paul's electrical cords like gremlins.
Seriously--how else would they be able to get their hair looking like that?

I wish Paul Is Live had a better release, with a full setlist including things like Get Out Of My Way, Off The Ground , Fixing A Hole etc. because as I compare songs like for like on his live CD's most of the best versions are this tour ! It was only 3 years after TTLF cd & his vocals seem much better.
-
Slightly off kilter.....and not for the first time, for some reason I have always thought that Mr McCartney did a live version with his band of I Want To Hold Your Hand.... : ....what medication I was on when I dreamt this God knows! .....having written that t'would be nice if he did a grungy modern version of it live wouldn't it fellow bored-ees....

I guess anyone can compare all this about Paul to other favourite singers anyone has. Elvis lived a similar story, for instance. In the very end he wasn't all like the pure old days and was even operatic and sounded like Meatloaf!. But I'm gonna compare it to my personal fav, Freddie. It's like if this was 1986 and we talked about Freddie vocals on that tour, some would call it awful, shouting, not pure at the old days, the 70s, an offense to his legacy, his vocals are shot, he should call it quits, but depending on the day he's like as good as he was... etc Then, after the 1986 tour we only expect a major vocal downfall. Then he records the album with Montserrat Caballe pretty much shocking everyone, and if you listen to it you can't say his vocals are exactly shot!. You can miss some old days finesse, but the boy is still a wonder. Then comes the 1989 album struggling with every song, and Queen refusing to tour. So now it seems like his vocals are definitely shot. And some are even happy they're not touring. Yet in 1991 Queen releases a new album. And that's the most shocking of them all. For half of the songs Freddie struggles like hell, more than ever. But for the other half he's as pure as in the early 70s, he's even better with all he has learnt all these years and those are probably his best vocals ever. Quite revamping himself as vocalist. Then he dies. And any criticism disappear. Even the worst past period seem untouchable perfection. Those awful vocals are now legendary. Concerts where he struggles for 2 hour are released with great success and praised as the best rock shows ever, with Freddie "on fire". Freddie, one of the fav target of critics it's now treated as a saint and a hero. A legend. The man. So he's considered now finally as one of the best ever. I think this is Paul's story too. Past, present and future. And kind of the same with John Lennon, Elvis, Michael Jackson...

Maybe Paul needs to talk to Art Garfunkel: http://music.msn.com/art-garfunkel-the-singer/story/interview/
Interesting interview, thanks. This quote from Art Garfunkel especially gave me pause:
People probably don't recognize how psychically traumatic it can be for a singer to lose his/her voice. It's very heavy. The voice is the identity. It's super self-conscious to be a singer, to carry your instrument, your sense of expression and beauty, in your chest wherever you go; it's maddening. A guitar player puts his axe down on the other side of the bedroom when he goes to sleep and gives it a break. Your instrument is with you.
Now Paul is lucky in that he is not just a singer. He's a songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist. But still I imagine it has been quite traumatic -- personally and emotionally -- for Paul to struggle singing songs that used to come easy. In a similar vein, I read a Q&A interview with Tom Jones this weekend in which the Observer asked him "What is your most treasured possession?" And he replied: "My voice." And then the paper asked, "What makes you unhappy?" And he said: "Not being able to sing." Since Paul refuses to speak frankly about his vocal struggles, it comes off as if he's in denial. But I don't believe that. I would bet that privately this summer's difficulties have been a tremendously stressful experience for him, and I just hope he's DOING something about it in the coming months.

agreed! maybe he could get a vocal coach to visit him while in the hamptons!

Maybe the problem is not his voice, when someone have many years doing something like his gigs, and is not young, when the conditions change, you feel different, you lose confidence, and you are exposed to make mistakes, I saw and read interviews made before the Jubilee and Olympics, and he said that, he knew that something can go wrong, he said "is not my public" it's like as when he sing for fans all the things were known...it's call rutine. I think this because for me is difficult to understand what happend with him between On the Run, who was wonderful, and the Jubilee and Olympics. I hope he will wants to keep singing live, in gigs for not big audiences, I love to see him in Arena Santiago (10 thousand persons) in 2013.

It was refreshing to read the article by Art Garfunkle who is also 70. I can imagine losing my voice. I lost mine and got a paralyzed vocal chord during a botched biopsy. The biopsy was negative, but I wound up sounding like Minnie Mouse, for a while. For someone who loves to sing every day (if only to the car radio) losing my singing voice was so traumatic. After about 3 years my other muscles learned to take over and I can sing again, but like Art mentioned...you have to sing every day, to keep things sounding OK. I'm glad Art was able to turn things around... I love listening to Paul sing. A few blips here and there... It's still Paul singing...a voice that I grew up listening to, and still love to listen to. This is such a non issue in the States...to my mind, as it should be... Can we talk about something else?!

Well you can of course talk about "something else" in many other threads here. This thread happens to be focused on Paul's battered reputation in the UK. But feel free to move on from it if that is your choice. But whether you like it or not, whether I like it or not -- and I pretty much hate it -- people in the UK continue to focus on the Jubilee/Olympics mess. Every time there's a story about Paul, the latest being on France giving him its highest honor, the comments are filled with "well lets hope he doesn't sing." That's when they're not attacking his hair, etc. I hope Paul and his people aren't sticking their heads in the sand about this. I continue to hope they makes some changes. On the plus side, I FINALLY saw someone defend Paul. In a story in the Telegraph that was about Elton John, Elton came to Paul's defense:
Sir Elton also hit back at criticism of Sir Paul McCartney for his performance at the Olympics opening ceremony. "It's a crap shoot - you don't have your own sound system, wait five hours backstage," he said. "Paul won't give up, and why should he?", he said.
Cheers, Elton. He's one of the few people to speak up for Paul.

Cheers for Elton! My English Auntie made a point of telling me how good she thought Paul sounded at the Olympics... so it's not a universal opinion with all Brits. Michelley, of course I can go on other threads... I'm just bemoaning that this topic is still going on... and on ...ad nauseam... I hope he does sing in France... and that puts an end to this...
