getting back on topic here......you know that theory that we all have about 'concert vocals sounding better when you are actually at the gig than in retrospect via an actuall recording...? well yes it is sort of true...but then folks i want re-introduce you all with a date in my history 16th jan 1990..my first of 9 macca gigs,,i though he sounded amazing..he was pushing 50 [sort of]....infact i have heard many people on here convinced that mccartney was actually sounding better on his tours in this century rather than circa 1990. listen and weep all you negative nillies..
this is an awesome vocal of hey jude...now thats when paul could still sing his signiture babies good...no comparisson to anything he has offered at a piano in this century. and if your still not convinced at how amazing paul[and band] sounded refresh yourself with this...I think Paul's vocals were at there best overall in 2002/03 compared to the early '90's, it was a shock to me how his voice was much better than in '89/'90 and '93 as a whole. I agree certain songs were sweeter back in the late '80's and early '90's, but the screaming vocals were lacking back then, he struggled through Maybe I'm Amazed in '89/'90 like he does today, excruciatingly so, 2002/03 it was much improved. (Maybe I'm Amazed 1990)
(Maybe I'm Amazed 2002)to be fair 'boycie' i did point out 'maybe im amazed' as the one glaring ommision.....however in general there is NO CONTEST..1990 wins hands down........okay there where elements of him managing his voice better in circa 2002 ,however the purity was already beginning to decline with his age.

I think you posted the MIA clip as i was composing my reply that's why i missed it. I think since 2005 it's really started to decline rapidly, there was a vast drop from 2004 to 2005, the Summer European tour was good, but the 2005 US tour has some really wincing moments, Jenny Wren and MIA to name but two.

How quickly life passes us by and things we think will last for ever, go past in a flash.

in the interest of fair play i have to add the maybe im amazed sounded every bit as bad as i remembered
so its a fact then, even back then when he was still singing great, pauls biggest problem was his own editing in a live context!Yes, that was truly awful.

I remember hearing it that awful way when i saw him in 1990 at Wembley Arena on the 14th January. The rumour was Paul strained his voice during rehearsals for that tour that's why there were problems.
-
Lordy what a shocker to though not just Pauls voice it was poor performance allround
-
its funny though because despite pauls complete inability to sing 'maybe im amazed' the rest of the concert was sublime....a complete vocal masterclass...ive checked out all the uploads from this concert from the user and it almost had me in tears....the sheer clarity and beauty of his voice stand out far better than even on the 'tripping' live cd..

Jet was iffy too remember, sorry to get on your case. I think even as far back as the '79 tour it was starting to lose a little, probably the dope smoking, but even with the struggle through the high screaming songs, overall in 1990 there was still sweetness left which today has gone, i'm sad to say, "sometimes you feel so sad". We all get old, but i think recognising your limitations as you age is what maturity should be about, i think dyeing your hair and acting as though you're still in your 20's is a bit sad and demeaning to yourself. On a positive note Paul's energy and enthusiasm at 70 is mind blowing.

I just wish he used this to promote and perform his solo stuff and get to work on more new material instead of flogging the beatle horse at every opportunity.

He should be reported to the Jockey Club for flogging the Beatle horse to death. For the Beatle horse it's been a "Roughride" I agree C, it's just such a waste of great and undervalued songs that they'll never be played. When you think about it Paul has never played a show with just solo original songs, they either have Beatles or Wings songs in them, about time he did. Oops, a pig flew past my window, that means there's hope of deliverance.

The version of Hey Jude is no better than bootlegs from 02/03, he was in superb form vocally on that tour. I've also got a bootleg of the 05 tour and it's strange, he sounds great on some songs and ok on others. MIA and Jenny Wren really aren't cringeworthy like others have suggested. Strangely he sings a few songs better these days than he does on the 05 bootleg!!

Your on top form this morning! The thing is people are getting tired of hearing him sing the same old beatle songs, I mean he doesn't even really change up his beatle songs. But I bet joe public would have atleast more respect for him if he just came out and belted some solo tunes. Why could he just not have done HI HI HI & Give Ireland back to the Irish at the Jubilee

Playing those songs would have been hilarious, not sure they'd get by the rehearsal stage. He should have played She Came In Through The Bathroom Window at the Jubilee, substituting she for he, it would have reminded old maj about the Palace break in a few years back, oh how she'd have laughed.

He may not have been as much in control in 89/90 than 2002 but listen to how much more of that sweet tone he still has in the earlier concerts. I think Paul had that youthful sweetness in his voice almost consistently up until Flaming Pie but since then (around the time that Linda passed away) it's faded more and more with each passing year although a flicker of it does come back once in a while. So I don't think he could do much justice to songs we would like to hear like "Beautiful Night", "Wanderlust", "Listen To What The Man Said", "My Brave Face". Compare the two "Babys Requests from 1979 and 2012, fair enough theirs a 30+ year difference but the first one has a very sweet high vocal whereas in the latter he can still reach very high notes for his age but the sweetness is artificial and he clearly sounds like an old man trying to sing like he used to but the tone isn't there anymore and the voice is too weak.

The thing i like about that version is its so bad its good you know you're hearing the man live something that cant be aimed at some of todays artists for certain.

Funny thing...I was just watching a few bootleg DVds of interviews he did in the 89 time period. OMG...the things he said about living in the past...not wanting to do so many oldies, even though people may enjoy it. He said I'd be bored to death without singing my new stuff.
