How many songs has Paul written?
-
Seeing people count the songs they have heard Paul do in concert made me first think that I haven't updated my list in quite awhile (actually I never did it to begin with, I think Darth did it) BUT...it also made me laugh to think of how many he hasn't played live & how many he has written. I wonder if there actually is a list somewhere.

Hello from St. Louis in the USA! I've wondered for a long time: How prolific is Sir Paul? How many songs has he written? Must be over 1,000! I know there are 200+ Lennon-McCartney songs. Then add in the ones with Linda, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, etc. and all the songs he wrote without a partner. Fine with me if you want to count the well-known Unreleased songs as well, and don't forget to include the Fireman and Oratorio ones! Has anyone done this research? Thanks, Alan
He said in the film Eight Days A Week: the Touring Years that he wrote about 300 songs with John. Adding his solo output since 1969 plus stuff he's never released must be close to 1,000. He's Mr. Music!

The ASCAP site search gives a total of 835 songs for Paul.. these include his songs with John Lennon and others. You can scroll the list here: https://www.ascap.com/repertory#ace/writer/18873266/MCCARTNEY PAUL JAMES (edited to add you'll have to copy and paste link, since there's a space after McCartney it won't go to the site correctly from here) If you need to do a manual search on the site, he's listed under Paul James McCartney for some reason, not James Paul I wanted to sort the search results by date, so we'd be able to see the newest songs he may be working on, but it looks like the dates aren't available.

I think that number is low. Especially if it includes songs that he wrote with John & also songs he wrote with others. There are about 300 that he wrote with John alone.

Were there other names he composed under? (Pseudonyms) Perhaps there's other songs listed under other names. Also, it's possible he may have a lot of songs that are just on paper at his home or studio, that he hasn't ever registered, because he hasn't recorded them, or sold them to other artists.

I should really Google and check but off the top of my head I think he wrote a song called Woman, for Peter & Gordon, under the name 'Bernard Webb'.

I just checked under Bernard Webb (Internet search indicated Bernard Webb is pseudonym he used) and nothing was listed... but "World without Love" and "Woman" are listed under McCartney. 835 songs is quite an accomplishment though, and nothing to sneeze at! I looked up some other famous composers, the greatest songwriters of all time, and Paul compares very highly: (Composer with number of songs registered in the ASCAP) Richard Rodgers 1009 Paul McCartney 835 (includes Lennon-McCartney and other collaborations) George Gershwin 757 Cole Porter 752 Jimmy Van Heusen 735 Irving Berlin 575

Paul is getting lazy. His pace is slowing down considerably.

He's composed over 800 songs, recorded hundreds of songs, won numerous awards, and tours every year to countless numbers of fans all over the world... he's always worked very hard to make the best music possible for us, seems like he should be allowed to take it easy

The song Woman was issued as written by Bernard Webb, but later, after it was revealed it was Paul, they listed it under McCartney. World Without Love, although written only by Paul, was credited to Lennon & McCartney. Wikipedia won't show a direct link to the page!
