Jenny Wren

Does anyone know what the line "Jenny Wren took wing" means?
-
"the little bird flew away" (?)
-
It means, to me, that Jenny Wren 'flew away' from her old home, and found happiness elsewhere.

Thanks. Yes that makes sense. It's an odd way of putting it though.

Jenny Wren lyrics: Like so many girls, Jenny Wren could sing But a broken heart, took her song away Like the other girls, Jenny Wren took wing She could see the world, and its foolish ways How, we, spend our days, casting, love aside Losing, sight of life, day, by, day She saw poverty, breaking up her home Wounded warriors, took her song away But the day will come, Jenny Wren will sing When this broken world, mends its foolish ways Then we, spend our days, catching up on life All because of you, Jenny Wren You saw who we are, Jenny Wren We all interpret songs, poems, in many different ways. Even Paul himself laughs at some of the things we come up with reading meaning into songs, etc... Jenny Wren, imo, is a bird who came through a lot of adversity in life. She could not sing anymore because she was so sad about the things she experienced in Life. Yet Jenny was lucky enough to make it through these tough times to see the world for what it is, the beauty and the ugliness of it all. She finally finds her place in the world and she sings again, but she has changed...like from a caterpillar to a butterfly. It reminds me of Alice in Wonderland.

Not really. It's a well-known expression ("took wing") See #39: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/take+wing?qsrc=2446

Same thing as the expression "took flight," in reference to airplanes.

It's also a way to nearly repeat the wording of the previous verse (ending in "sing" versus "wing") and also to keep a rhyme going.

This song wasn't heavily compared to "Blackbird" for no reason.

To my way of interpreting the song (taking into the entire context), I think 'took wing' means Jenny 'took wing' to see what this world has or is (figuratively) made of...almost exploratory in nature as a means to see why it's 'broken'

Wow, it never would have occurred to me that this lyric was obscure or hard to figure out. Always struck me as pretty straightforward -- more so than a lot of Paul's lyrics.
